Dr. Martens have long become iconic and for many subcultures they are important. Today, not only the famous ankle boots are popular, but also shoes, boots and sandals that are known and loved all over the world. You don't have to be a punk or a gothic lover to wear Martins, because this is one of those few cases when shoes are a manifestation of freedom of spirit and are suitable for absolutely everyone!

A bit of history

The first ankle boots Dr. Martens were invented by Klaus Mertens... At the end of World War II, he injured his leg by walking in uncomfortable army boots. Then he came up with the idea to sew a pair of boots that would look like military ones, but at the same time were soft and comfortable.

There are two versions: one says that he stole some leather, a needle and thread during the massive robberies, the other that he acquired them from a neighbor, a shoemaker. In any case, the materials that appeared to him allowed him to realize his idea.

A pair of unique boots with a special sole construction was indeed extremely comfortable to wear. While walking, the sole was springy, so the legs practically did not feel fatigue, even during prolonged wear.

Thanks to the help of his friend, physician Herbret Funk, the newly minted colleagues started mass production of boots. For sewing, improvised means were used: military leather pants were the basis, shoulder straps played the role of insoles, and the sole was cut out of rubber from decommissioned military aircraft.

Comfortable shoes quickly gained popularity, so the friends soon opened a factory in Munich. In the late 50s, their shoes began to appear in international stores, in particular in the British Shoe & Leather News. The owner of this shop bought a license to make orthopedic shoes with air soles.

So, in 1960, the first official Dr. Martens, which were named after their creator. They were originally only a couple of dollars because they were aimed at working class people.

Soon, skinheads began to wear them, who made red martins a symbol of their movement. At certain times, they were worn by punks, representatives of musical culture, goths and representatives of other subcultures. Thus, they fell into youth fashion.

Since the beginning of the 90s, young girls began to wear them, combining socks with light dresses. Today, there are no restrictions at all, because martins are the most popular shoes of the 21st century. A large selection of models and colors allows you to choose Dr. Martens for all occasions.

Peculiarities

The first official martins had the look that we now code for the classic model: rounded toe, outsole with tread, metal toe, 8 lace holes, cherry blossom and signature yellow stitching. Each pair was sewn with a strap with the inscription "AirWair".

To date, the appearance of the famous boots has changed more than once. Back in the early 90s, more than 3 thousand models were presented in the brand's assortment: men, women, children, unisex. They differed in the texture of the material, colors and shape of the toe, but still the key features of the boots always remain unchanged.

Any mattresses have a durable rubber sole that is not afraid of aggressive environments and does not slip on ice. The anatomically shaped insole follows the curves of the foot for maximum comfort.

Strong leather is treated with a special compound that has water-repellent properties. But most importantly, Dr. Martens are versatile and go with any style of clothing.

Varieties

Ankle boots

Ankle boots were the first, and still are the main line of footwear produced by the brand. They can be of several types: with 8 holes for laces, with 10 and with 14. We will dwell on each model in more detail a little later.

Ankle boots are matte and lacquered, and their colors are very diverse. The most popular are black, burgundy, brown and blue. There are also models with a wide variety of patterns.

Chelsea

The model has its own characteristic features - ankle height, a rounded toe, wide rubber inserts and a small loop at the back with the brand's motto. Chelsea are presented in a large assortment: from leather and eco-leather (vegan), rubber, textile, flat and small heels, with a zipper and winter with fur. The color scheme is classic, restrained, as it should be for true "British".

Shoes

Shoes are cropped ankle boots with three holes. These boots are a "cropped" version of the 1460 model. They were originally worn by English postmen, but today the elegant lace-up boots have become a real classic. They can even be worn to work, since, in fact, this is a derby in the embodiment of the Dr. Martens.

There are Monkey Martins, the model is called Jules. These are shoes without laces, in which two buckles play the role of fasteners.

Previous models belong to the "unisex" category, but open shoes with a strap on the instep (Mary Jane) are purely for women, suitable for both young girls and little girls. The model is called Indica.

Models

Winter

Boots with fur are great for the winter season. Outwardly, they do not differ much from the classic ones, but they have a plush lining and a thickened rubber sole.

High

For all its outward rudeness and brutality, the 1914 model looks quite harmonious on graceful female legs. With 14 lace holes, the high shaft reaches almost to the knee, cleverly accentuates the curves of the ankle and helps create a harmonious silhouette.

They will look great when paired with skinny jeans or a short skirt, as the flat sole and masculine appearance will smooth out some of the vulgarity that sometimes slips in a combination of high boots and a miniskirt.

Low

The color scheme of the models is varied, but, unlike the high, low ankle boots go well with almost any clothing. There are no restrictions, you should not wear them, except perhaps with a business suit, if you have a strict dress code at work.

Heels

Women's ankle boots with chunky heels were created especially for those girls who want to combine elegance and comfort. The model was named after the ancient Greek goddess of fertility, Persephone.

Despite the appearance of the heel, the basic features of the boots remained unchanged. It's still a thick, springy outsole with a tread, a rounded toe, but 6 lace holes instead of the classic 8.

Transparent

The transparent ankle boots are made from vulcanized rubber and equipped with a classic anti-slip sole. A kind of rubber boots, only with laces. They can be colorless, colored and with various prints. Look great with bright socks and cropped jeans.

Lacquered

Lacquered shoes of this brand are presented in several lines. These can be models with heels, high, low, classic. Since the glossy finish is more appreciated by girls, patent leather boots often made in bright colors and complemented by a variety of patterns.

Baby

For a long time, the brand has been producing boots for young rebels and little dandies. A large assortment of shoes for girls and boys pleases with its variety and a wide dimensional grid - from 28 to 34 sizes.

You can buy both plain and printed boots, for example, camouflage colors, flowers and even a Hello Kitty image.

Color solutions

The first canon martins were cherry-colored. At first they wanted to make them universal black, but then settled on a more interesting color.

Today, black boots are difficult to find in women's lines, although nothing is impossible. Nevertheless, designers are trying to delight fans of the brand with bright and juicy colors.

Red, green, pink, blue, white, yellow shoes are popular. They will invariably attract attention and make any look memorable.

If you prefer more discreet options, choose brown, burgundy, mustard, khaki. They can be called universal, they will be a soft end to the image.

Martins with various prints look interesting: in a flower, with the image of comic and cartoon characters, with abstract drawings, flags of different countries. The imagination of designers knows no boundaries!

This season, boots made of metallic leather are at the peak of popularity, because this is a real trend of the season. Silver, gold, crimson and blue - shiny Dr. Martens will be a real highlight of your look.

How and with what to wear?

Dr. Martens have a unique ability - they look amazingly good with any outfit. The secret lies in eclecticism so fashionable today and playing on contrasts.

With jeans and trousers

However, these are the perfect shoes for a bad girl look. Ripped jeans, dark lipstick, dark glasses, a leather jacket and rough boots - and a stylish look is ready, which has not been associated with informals for a long time. This is a completely versatile outfit that will suit any informal event. Whether it's for shopping or for a party. Convenient, relevant and moderately bold.

If you want aggressiveness in your look, black color and clothes made of leather, camouflage and thick denim will help you to show it. For example, in winter, martins, blue jeans, a gray sweatshirt and a khaki parka will go well; in autumn, the parka can be replaced with a bomber jacket.

With dress and skirt

In order not to lose your femininity, wearing Dr. Martens, make sure that your look includes some kind of purely girlish accessory. This can be a blouse or floral dress, a hat with a ribbon, a blouse with a flirty neckline, or, in extreme cases, pink lip gloss. In short, any element that will prevent your image from becoming androgynous, unless you yourself want to.

An excellent combination will turn out from martins, an airy dress and a leather jacket or a denim jacket. You can wear them with a sun or pencil skirt and a light blouse with a flirty pattern.

How to lace up?

Even if you prefer strict minimalism, unusual lacing will help to diversify the image. There are many ways to lace up martins in a beautiful way.

Lace up short martins shoes so that there are horizontal lines on the seamy side, and diagonal lines are at the bottom. The lacing will turn out to be simple and neat, it will not distract attention from the shoes themselves.

Traditional criss-cross lacing is suitable for ankle boots, but it can also be varied. Alternate intersecting elements so that one cross goes from below, and the other from above, focusing on the picture. This will make the boots much easier to put on and take off by loosening the lacing. This is especially true for tall martins.

The video will help you visually get acquainted with interesting lacing methods.

Selection and care tips

Many are interested in how to distinguish original martins from a fake. First, evaluate the quality of the material, they should be natural - leather, suede or nubuck, with the exception of the Vegan line. These boots are sewn from high quality eco-leather, which does not look different from natural.

Soft leather is used for sewing, if after trying on you feel that ankle boots are "like wooden", this should cause you first doubts.

No plastic sole, it should not be too stiff to the touch and an air cushion is required. All the necessary brand markings are always present on the sole.

The logo must be embossed on the insole, it will not be superfluous to check it for spelling errors.

Shoes are always packed in a sturdy box, the brand logo is present on the lid and on the side of the box. Check the information on the information box on the boots. Needless to say, it must be identical. The box must contain spare laces packed in a branded bag.

How to deliver?

  • Martins wear very well, so some people prefer to take boots one size smaller. True, for this to happen naturally, you will have to wait a couple of months.
  • There are several ways to speed up this process. Remove the laces and rub the Dr. Martens. You can also use a less expensive product, such as a fragrance-free, dye-free baby oil.
  • Put on thick woolen socks, put on your boots, and walk around the room. You can go outside, but do not go far from home - walk in martins for no more than two hours, and then take a break. Increase the wearing time over time until they wear out completely.

Care

In the care of Dr. Martens is no big deal.

  1. If heavy stains have formed on the shoes, remove them with a damp cloth and leave to dry.
  2. If your shoes get wet, wipe them dry and place them on a newspaper or old towel and leave to dry naturally. Never use a heater or radiator to avoid deformation of the skin.
  3. Use special leather shoe care products - cream, spray or balm, which must be applied to the boots every day in an even layer. It is preferable to do this with a special sponge, which is often sold in the kit. If you wear colored martins, you will need a clear product that will not stain your shoes.
