Initially, a wristwatch is a device for measuring time. Now it is not only a stylish accessory and a way to highlight your own individuality and social status, but also a multifunctional assistant in working with time.

A little about the clock

It would seem that with the advent of advanced telephones and other electronic devices that have a time display on the display, there is no need for a wristwatch - but this is not the case. Although now there are many companies that create inexpensive watches, a huge number of people prefer expensive ones, wanting to show others their social status.

Some accessory makers refer to this device as a product for fun rather than time tracking. And it often appears as an expensive gift. But still, we are seeing more and more improvements, more and more trends, more and more technologies affecting the usefulness of the usual ordinary wristwatches we are used to. And the most popular and discussed now are watches equipped with a chronograph.

Peculiarities

In the modern sense, a chronograph (other Greek chronos "time" + grapho "write") is a counter that allows you to measure very accurately, record a period of time and save data. This intricate device appeared in the first half of the 19th century and was used mainly in horse races. At the end of the second hand of the first time-lapse device, an inkwell was placed, which made a mark on the dial when the movement was stopped.

The frequency of operation of today's chronograph is measured in vph (vibtarion per hour), and today the most common frequency is 28,800 vph. Based on this, it becomes easy to find out how many vibrations are obtained in seconds. If you divide 28,800 vph by the total number of seconds per hour, you get 8.

This means that the chronograph, which operates at 28,800 vph, is able to measure a period of time with an accuracy of 1/8 of a second.

It is easy to use - using the buttons built into the watch case. The number of buttons depends on the model - more modern (split-chronographs) have more. However, it is inconvenient to use the mechanism with one button, because it alone performs the start, stop, and reset.

Models

Modern split-chronographs with two hands located one below the other are capable of performing several tasks at the same time. With a split chronograph, it becomes easy to measure the duration of several events, which, for example, began at the same time and ended at different times, or one after the other.

There is another model, the peculiarity of which is the function of an instant restart, it is called fly-back and is used to take measurements that do not have gaps between values.

The design of chronographs can also vary. In stores, you will find models with a wide variety of scales (tachymetric, which can measure the speed of an object moving, telemetric, which measures distance by sound, logarithmic scale, and others).

It is known that chronograph watches can be either mechanical or quartz. Quartz watches can even emit a signal when the time is out, if, of course, the chronometer has an interval designation function.

There are also combined models on sale that combine, for example, a conventional chronograph and a tachymeter scale. Such a device is very convenient, because it allows you to track the speed of an object as well as time.

There is no particular difference between men's and women's watches - men's watches can be larger and usually dark or gray, while women's watches are lighter and can be decorated with precious stones. When choosing a color for a product, buyers' preferences most often fall on neutral or delicate, dull colors, so that the device fits any image, complements it.

The following video will tell you more about what a chronograph is and how to use it:

Who is using?

The chronograph is widely used. It is necessary for those people who need time control. Many buyers, purchasing a watch, do not even know why they need this device, but it is incredibly useful even in everyday life. Most often they are used as stopwatches by sports fans, but unlike a stopwatch, the chronograph does not affect the operation of the main device, but is an add-on.

They also use it at business meetings, and waiting for a courier with pizza, and preparing a complex dish, and riding a bicycle.

Often, doing everyday tasks, we are faced with the need to measure time, but we do not even think about how useful a chronograph would be at this moment, designed specifically for counting seconds, minutes, hours. This device perfectly helps in the work of both the military, and the doctor, and the teacher.

Perhaps a watch with a chronograph will force you to treat this device in a special way and you will include it in your daily life along with a drop of cologne. Undoubtedly, such a watch is an excellent assistant in life and a universal gift.

When choosing a product, you must first make sure that you will use the movement that you have learned so much about now, because a dial equipped with a chronograph is slightly larger and heavier than a regular one.

It is important to note that the repair of such a complicated and almost eternal mechanism is very expensive.

So, we have learned in general terms what a chronograph is, how it works and what it is for in a wristwatch, and your task is to choose the right model for yourself and enjoy the purchase! However, be prepared for the heightened interest of others in you and do not get carried away with research with a chronograph, because who knows, suddenly these easy experiments will one day turn into a manic idea!
