In the modern world, it is customary to pay great attention to how others perceive you, which means that any unpleasant odors must be completely defeated. The current chemical industry offers numerous means to achieve this goal in the form of various deodorants, but their formulations are complex and can contain the most unexpected components, which often leads to unforeseen consequences for humans.

Many today are seriously concerned about whether they are harming their health by using the usual deodorant, as well as the question of whether it is possible to choose a safer remedy.

What should be the composition?

The concept of a safe deodorant is largely relative - a product that is not harmful to the vast majority of consumers can cause health problems in one particular person due to the inclusion in its composition of components to which this particular consumer is allergic.

At least for this reason, when choosing a deodorant, it is necessary to carefully study the composition - this is relevant in all cases when you have a diagnosed allergy or an allergic reaction has been observed after using one of the products of this type.

The "correct" deodorant, ideally, should consist almost entirely of perfumery fragrances - These are natural substances extracted from plants and herbs, more physically and mechanically than chemically.

At the same time, hand-made deodorants have not been produced for a long time, therefore, in their composition, perfumery fragrances have been replaced by such components as essential oils or plant extractsneeded to create a pleasant scent to mask unwanted odors. These ingredients are also perfectly acceptable and not considered harmful, unless you are allergic to them.

In addition, deodorant substances may contain mineral crystalscomplementing the aromatic part of the mixture. Such a component is also considered to be harmless.

However, much more important is not what is included in a safe deodorant, but what should not be there.

For example, one of the more controversial ingredients is various aluminum-based salts, which, by the way, actually convert deodorant into antiperspirant. On the one hand, none of the many antiperspirants can exist without these salts, since they are its key component, on the other hand, some experts insist that in their action everything is not as cloudless as advertisers say.

Aluminum salts allow you to effectively fight perspiration, since they polymerize in the ducts of the sweat glands and completely block them, simply not letting the sweat out.

Manufacturers usually emphasize that blocking a small part of the skin surface, which usually affects only the armpits (less often - palms and feet), does not adversely affect the body due to its ability to redirect perspiration to other, less important areas. According to them, aluminum itself, potentially undesirable in the body in excessive doses, does not enter the bloodstream, since the salts are selected insoluble.

At the same time, both statements are often challenged - so, with all the normalness of sweating for the body as a whole, the area of the skin regularly treated with an antiperspirant constantly experiences difficulties in order to breathe normally, and this cannot have a positive effect on the tissues in this place. In addition, aluminum ions, especially in poorly made deodorants, can still enter the bloodstream in some quantities.

In the body, they tend to gradually accumulate and over time can provoke the development of cancer, so decide for yourself whether you need such a deodorant.

Most modern deodorants should have a complex effect, to compete effectively in the market, because many of them have antiseptic properties. At first glance, this is quite a useful addition, but the question is by what means it is achieved - if the manufacturer achieves the desired effect through the use of natural remedies, then there should be no questions for him.

Another thing is that most manufacturers prefer to save on ingredients in order to outperform competitors due to the low cost of their products - for these purposes, parabens are used as antiseptics.

For such components, all the same unpleasant characteristics are characteristic that were described above for aluminum ions - they also enter the bloodstream and also accumulate in the body, without leading to anything good.

Comparison of release forms

Deodorants are produced in different forms with a focus on usability on different areas of the body. In most cases, the form of release has little effect on the hazard or safety of the substance - in each of the categories below there are both harmless and harmful deodorants.

Nevertheless, it will not hurt to briefly consider the features of all forms of release.

  • Spray. One of the most popular forms of release, which is most in demand because it allows a quick movement to cover large areas of the body with a layer of deodorant. This can also be a problem - if a person has problems with the lungs, it is often undesirable for him to inhale any fragrances, but here they literally fly in all directions.

For the same reason, the substance is consumed faster than in any other variation.

  • Roll-on deodorant. The bottle contains the same liquid as in the spray, only it is not sprayed in all directions, but is carefully and economically applied only to the small area that needs to be treated. Accordingly, there is no longer any danger for the lungs, but if there is an allergy to any of the components, this does not change anything.
  • Gel deodorants. In general, they also belong to the category of roller, and distinguish them into a separate class for the reason that the consistency of the substance is thicker here. Due to the fact that the gel contains less water, when it comes into contact with the skin, it dries much faster, which means that it stains clothes much less. For reasons unknown to us, such products are much more widely represented in the men's segment.
  • Solid sticks... Deodorants of this type are usually close to antiperspirants - at least, they are also capable of creating a film on the skin surface that does not allow the release of sweat, or at least significantly reduces it. Despite the pronounced severity of the expected effect, we have already discussed above how it can be dangerous.
  • Crystals. This type of deodorant, also classified as an antiperspirant, is still quite rare and seems very original, since in fact it is just a piece of alunite (alum stone).

Such crystals are extremely harmful to the life of fetid bacteria. Since crystalline deodorant contains no additional additives, it is considered environmentally friendly, hypoallergenic and safe, and is spent very economically.

It is generally accepted that there are no contraindications to its use, moreover, it does not leave marks on clothes.

Review of the best brands

The overwhelming share of modern promoted brands of deodorants and antiperspirants are moving out due to mass. Bulk, as a rule, is not very expensive, otherwise it will not be possible to get popular love, and an attempt to save on production, as we could see above, often leads to the inclusion of very dubious components in the composition of the substance. For this reason, many of the manufacturers listed below will seem unfamiliar to the average reader.

Our list focuses on the most harmless deodorants, which tend not to be the most effective in terms of sweat protection.

For the same reason, we did not present manufacturers in the form of some kind of rating with the distribution of seats - it is rather difficult to assess safety without reference to efficiency. We can only say with confidence that the products of all brands below are completely safe (with the exception of a possible allergy to the components of the deodorant), and you just have to choose for yourself the option that you like the most.

  • CitrusWeleda. The Swiss aerosol, as you might guess from its name, has a pronounced citrus aroma, not because of the additives, but because it is almost entirely composed of the essential oils of these aromatic fruits. There is absolutely nothing harmful in it - no aluminum, no preservatives, not even flavors or dyes.

The product can be used both to deodorize the armpits and to be applied over the entire surface of the body after water procedures.

  • Vichy. The only well-known brand on our list with strong brand awareness through intense advertising. The French company produces an assortment of women's products, emphasizing that all components are completely safe and will not even cause allergies. It is curious that the brand produces not only conventional deodorants, but also long-acting antiperspirants (up to 7 days).

The safety of such a product is achieved due to the complete absence of any parabens in the composition, while aluminum is completely replaced by zinc, which supposedly, in principle, cannot be absorbed into the blood from the surface of the skin.

  • NatureVeil. The deodorant produced by TianDe is devoid of any pleasant aroma - there is not a drop of perfumery fragrances in it, therefore it is usually used in combination with eau de toilette. The principle of operation of this remedy is not to mask an already existing unpleasant odor, but to interfere with the vital activity of bacteria, which provoke the emergence of such.

The good thing about this solid deodorant is that it lasts for a long time - the shelf life of one bottle is almost 8 times longer than that of a classic roll-on antiperspirant.

  • Greench. Quite an unusual solution for our time, since the fight against sweat is carried out by the old method - with the help of dusting. The powder allows you to absorb excess moisture, which additionally protects the sweaty areas from the occurrence of diaper rash. The composition of the substance includes numerous components of natural origin, giving it a light ethereal aroma. The composition contains sodium and magnesium salts, but they are harmless to humans, and as part of the product they function as absorbents.
  • Crystal Body Deodorant Stick. A deodorant based on alunite (however, like most of the products presented here) has a complex effect - it eliminates an unpleasant odor at the root, counteracting the growth of bacteria, and absorbs sweat without interfering with the normal functioning of the sweat glands. There are no perfume fragrances in the composition, therefore the product is positioned as not interfering with the use of your favorite perfume.

In addition, it is fragrances that usually cause allergic reactions, but here they simply do not exist, so hypoallergenicity is guaranteed.

  • Deonat. In general, this is a product with the same properties and based on the same components that have already been described, simply produced by another company. However, the stick contains additional components designed to accelerate skin recovery after any mechanical damage. In the case of the underarms, this is a very useful addition, as most people prefer to shave their hair there and are cut quite often during the procedure.

How to choose?

The first thing you should pay attention to when choosing a deodorant and not only is that any manufacturer is trying to advertise itself and show its products from the best side, even if there is no particular objective reason for this. All the loud words written on the label next to the name or voiced in commercials are a slogan and nothing more. When you hear that some deodorant is recognized as "number one" in its segment, ask yourself who recognized it as such, and if it was the competent authority, why its name is not mentioned in the advertisement.

If it is mentioned, do not be too lazy to look whether such an authority exists at all, whether it is authoritative in this area and whether it is aware that it has recognized something there.

For a person who is keenly interested in the safety of the means used, a recommendation will be mandatory to study the composition of an unfamiliar deodorant before buying. It will be difficult the first time, but over time you will get used to it and most of the ingredients will become familiar to you.

Seeing an unfamiliar component, do not be lazy to clarify what it is, why it is added to the deodorant and how it affects the body - behind difficult-to-read constructions, additives of very dubious properties are often hidden.

This is especially true for pregnant women, whose body is highly sensitive to allergens, even if the allergy has never been shown before. Again, some additives, entering the bloodstream, can have an extremely negative effect on the fetus, which is still completely defenseless against their effects.

While giving preference to a completely natural deodorant without "chemistry", you should understand that all the outstanding achievements of the modern world are associated precisely with the chemical industry, and not with the miraculous forces of nature. A completely harmless product will not harm your health, but it will not protect against sweat as a synthetic analogue could.

First of all, a deodorant, and even completely from natural ingredients, will not protect you from wet armpits in any way - you will get rid of an unpleasant odor, but nothing more. In addition, even the best deodorant cannot work even for a day, not to mention longer periods, without reapplying.

For this reason, a natural deodorant, in order to give a full-fledged feeling of cleanliness and freshness, should be used 2-3 times a day, and even then in the company of two daily showers, otherwise you may not notice a special effect.
