Roses are one of the most demanded and beloved flowers by many of the fair sex. Bouquets containing such flowers are presented on various occasions. Having received such an amazing bouquet, many girls are wondering what needs to be done to keep the roses in the vase for as long as possible, delighting the eyes with their sophisticated appearance. It is worth considering the basic rules for preparing water, as well as recommendations and tips for caring for a beautiful bunch of fresh roses.

Water preparation

The main emphasis, in order to keep the flowers fresh for a long time, needs to be done on the preparation of water in a vase. It would seem that there is nothing to philosophize here: you turn on the tap and pour it into a vase, put flowers there and rejoice at the beautiful flowers. This opinion is wrong. It is necessary to seriously approach the preparation of water in order for a bouquet of roses to stand in a vase for a long time.

  • First, you should take measures to resuscitate the flowers. The first step is to place the bouquet in a large container so that the latter is completely in the water. This must be done even for the freshest roses, since most of them, from the moment they are cut from the flower garden, overcome hundreds and thousands of kilometers before getting to the market or to the flower shop.
  • Water needs to be selected depending on the season - this way the flowers will better acclimatize. If you buy a bouquet in winter, you need to place it in water at room temperature. For flowers bought in a hot summer, you need to prepare cool water.
  • The best option is to leave the flowers to lie in the water. within a few hours, but no more.Since the prolonged presence of the entire plant in the aquatic environment can provoke the process of decay and destruction of both stems and buds.
  • It is not recommended to use chlorinated water, because the flowers do not like this type of water very much. If there is no other source (as soon as you draw water from the tap), then try to let it stand for several days until the maximum chlorine content evaporates. A small proportion of chlorine in the separated water will act as a disinfectant, effectively fighting bacteria that appear in the water when flowers are there.
  • Change the water every morning., including special additives that will help the flowers to maintain their natural freshness over a long period of time. At night, it is recommended to place them in a basin filled with water or in a bathtub, trying to protect the buds from liquid ingress.

Choosing effective supplements

The quality indicators of the water in which the bouquet with roses is located will have a serious impact on its freshness. To change the structure of the water, it is necessary to add a variety of active ingredients. For this purpose, both substances specially developed by florists and the usual means that are used in everyday life can be used. The choice of such a remedy will depend on various purposes.

  • For antibacterial prophylaxis, so that the roses stay in the vase longer, aspirin should be added. Please note that there should be 1 aspirin tablet for 1 liter of liquid. If a larger volume of water is placed in the vase, then the number of aspirin tablets must be proportionally increased.
  • Instead of aspirin, it is recommended to use your usual bleach or liquid dishwashing detergent. In 1 liter of water, you will need to add either a few drops of bleach or a drop of detergent. Such means will help stop the development of the decay process. In addition, aspirin also allows you to preserve the color of the rose buds, which is very important for plants with brightly colored petals.
  • To achieve an antibacterial effect, a solution of borax, glycerin and alcohol is often added.

Important: to speed up the process of dissolving aspirin in water, it should be crushed before use.

    • If you want the bouquet to please the eye for more than 10 days, then you need to put it in sour water. To do this, add 2 dessert spoons of table vinegar to 1 liter of water (its concentration should be 9%). Vinegar can be replaced with citric acid solution. For a similar amount of water, it will take half a teaspoon.
    • To achieve a preservative result, ammonia is used. This substance will only need a few drops. In addition to ammonia, experts advise pouring 1 tablespoon of vodka into the water per 1 liter of liquid.
    • In order to prolong the existence of flowers, charcoal or activated carbon, which is sold in tablets, should be added to the vase. Some housewives use several crystals of potassium permanganate or a pinch of alum.
    • You can nourish the roses with regular sugar. To do this, add 2 tablespoons of sugar to 1 liter of water.
    • If you want to achieve a lush bouquet and speed up the blooming process, then pour 2 tablespoons of camphor oil in proportion to 1 liter of water.
    • From the special means that are used by florists to extend the life of bouquets, you can opt for such preparations as "Living Rose", "Bouquet", "Fresh Flowers".

    Important! Experts do not recommend multi-component formulations. It is better to choose only one of the above recipes and use it. In this case, do not forget to change the water in the vase daily. The container where the flowers are located should be thoroughly washed every time and the sections on the plant should be renewed.

    Daily care rules

    Daily care plays an important role in keeping the bouquet of roses fresh. Compliance with simple rules will significantly increase the life of your flowers.

    • Try to spray the buds and stems daily with a spray bottle. Use only standing water for these purposes. Every day, once a day, rinse the stem with water, which will help rid the plant of bacteria formed in the water, reducing the risk of decay. A similar procedure must be performed before replacing the water in a vase.
    • Try to place roses every day in the bathroom or in a basin that has been filled with water. You need to leave the flowers for 12 hours, it is better to do it overnight. Placing roses in water, be extremely careful with white buds. Their petals are much softer than those of darker varieties. In addition, any flaws are immediately visible on such petals.
    • Do not forget to periodically update the slices of the plant, which will improve its metabolic processes. This should be done at a distance of 1–2 centimeters higher than the previous cut was. If you do not carry out regular pruning of flowers, due to an insufficient amount of moisture and nutrients, they will quickly wither and dry out.
    • For your information, it is necessary to cut the stems in a special way, using a sharp tool for this purpose: scissors or pruning shears. The cut is made diagonally, with the cut point under water. Thanks to this, air does not get to the cut, plugs will not form in the vascular bed of the stem, and the plant will live longer. It is also recommended to cut the slices themselves into several parts to ensure the plant has better water absorption.
    • Do not place the bouquet next to fresh fruits and vegetables, as they produce ethylene, which negatively affects the flowers. And it is also not advised to put roses in the same vessel with other flowers. The best option is a similar arrangement of plants a few meters from each other.

    Florist tips

    Many florists recommend adhere to the following simple rules to extend the life of a bouquet at home:

    • before immersing the plant in a vase, tear off all the leaves that will be at the water level, which will help minimize the risk of the formation of pathogenic bacteria and save the flower from premature decay;
    • it is better to use a high vessel so that the water reaches a level not lower than the middle of the plant stem; the best option is to place the bouquet in a ceramic vase, since such a material is not capable of transmitting solar radiation, as a result of which this will extend the life of the bouquet at home;
    • do not place previously uncut roses in the vase, as they will rest against the bottom of the container and will not be able to receive nutrients;
    • in order for the roses to stand for a long time, the vase should be placed in the shade so that direct sunlight is not directed at it, and it is also not recommended to place plants near a heat source, for example, with a battery in winter;
    • roses love coolness, but at the same time they do not tolerate drafts, so you do not need to put them next to the open window;
    • so that cut flowers last a little longer, some experts recommend boiling the tip of the stem; it needs to be dipped in boiling water for 5 minutes, and then placed in a chilled liquid;
    • if you were presented with a bouquet in winter and brought it from the frost, you do not need to immediately place it in a vase of water, leave such flowers for a few minutes, giving them time to warm up a little.

    If you notice that your flowers have begun to fade, then you need to take measures to revive them.

    • It is necessary to pre-prune the plant according to the usual method. But roses are not placed in cool water, but, on the contrary, in very hot water (its temperature should reach +90 degrees).To save the plant from possible burns, it is recommended to carefully wrap the leaves and buds in paper. It is necessary to wait until the water cools down and its temperature equals that of the environment. While in hot water, the rose will gradually transform, becoming beautiful and fresh again.
    • Wrap each bud in a plastic bag overnight. It is important that it is slightly damp. The plastic bag should be secured, maintaining tightness, while trying not to damage the stalk. In this way, you create a greenhouse effect for the plant, like in a greenhouse, thanks to which it will raise its bud.

        In some cases, cuts on the stem can provoke premature wilting. If you see such damage, then you need to trim the trunk of the plant above this point. The water should be heated to a temperature of + 38– + 39 degrees. It is poured into a not very deep ceramic container, which has a wide neck, and damaged roses are placed there.

        If you purchased a rose in advance for presenting at a solemn moment and notice that it has wilted a little, make a new cut and place the flower in the water. After several hours, the plant is removed from the water, its stem is wrapped in a damp cloth, and the entire rose should be wrapped in paper or newspaper. As such, the flowers are placed in the refrigerator to keep them fresh for an extended period of time.

        As you can see, keeping a bouquet of roses fresh for a long time is not very difficult. The main thing is to follow simple rules and recommendations for daily care, then you can admire exquisite flowers for a long time.
