Ironing is a process that we face every day in everyday life. And this daily work would be even more time consuming without a quality ironing board.

To date, stores provide a large selection of this device. Choose what you want: it all depends on your financial capabilities and preferences.

The choice of boards is great and varied. The ironing board can be the most ordinary one - the same one that our grandmothers and mothers used, or it can be fashionable, improved. Modern boards come with a fan, roller and other know-how. They can also be built-in, folding or desktop.

But there is something that unites them all. Each ironing board needs a cover, which directly affects the quality of ironing. Usually the cover comes with the board, but sooner or later it becomes necessary to change it.

In this article we will talk about the types of covers, draw your attention to the main criteria for choosing the right coating for the board.

What is important when choosing a cover

The removable cover is very important for ironing. It should combine both functionality and practicality. The process must be approached very responsibly and competently. We live in a modern world where even the ironing board cover serves as an interior detail and is an accessory. But do not forget about the main purpose - safe and high-quality ironing of things.

Step-by-step instructions for choosing a cover.

  1. We measure the ironing board. We are interested in length and width. If everything is clear with the length, but as for the width, then we measure only the working surface in the widest place. The countertop requires special attention, its edge can be of different shapes - round, obtuse or conical. Consider this factor too.
  2. Decide on the coating material. It can be very different, we will consider this moment in detail a little further.
  3. The presence of packing.
  4. Choose a mount that suits your board.

Now let's analyze the points listed above in detail in order to clarify and make the choice of board overlay as easy as possible.

Varieties of board covers

There is a wide range of coatings. They differ in shape, size, models, materials. The main varieties are represented by a number of models.

  • Polyester. This is the cheapest type of case. What can attract attention in such a case is only the appearance, and so, unfortunately, there is nothing special and remarkable. Their service life is maximum 2 years.
  • 100% cotton. The most popular and most advantageous option. Such products are easy to wash, do not fade during operation, and the period of use is quite long - about 3 years. Their disadvantage is that they are not heat-resistant, if you leave the switched on iron in a horizontal position, the cover will burn out.
  • Teflon. Thanks to this innovation, our clothes will not stick during ironing. Their surface is resistant to high temperatures. The cost is higher than cotton.
  • Foam rubber. We provide soft ironing. Resistant to all temperature conditions.
  • Universal. Ideal, fits most ironing boards. The dimensions of such covers are 129 x 51 centimeters. Has a bright and different color scheme. There are no problems with it during washing. The price is reasonable and pleasant.
  • Non-stick coated. The fabric from which the cover is made is impregnated with silicone during the manufacturing process. This makes the cape resistant even to the highest temperature conditions. Clothes don't stick. Such a cover will last a very long time.
  • Metallized. When sewing, a special thread is used, which makes such a cover very high quality. These products are the most durable. The aluminum thread guarantees heat transfer and that is why ironing occurs simultaneously from both sides.
  • Elasticated case. Very easy to use. Easily removed, put on, fixed. If necessary, you can quickly remove and wash. The downside is that it is not suitable for boards with an iron stand. And the gum deforms over time, stretches, you have to buy a new cover.
  • Miracle case. This invention appeared and entered the market in 2010. In terms of its properties, it has bypassed its predecessors. Heat resistance, long service life, water resistance are the main characteristics of the miracle case. With its use, the time spent on ironing is reduced, and the quality, on the contrary, is higher. The maximum temperature that it can withstand is 150 degrees. New technologies and materials were used for its production. The quality of this product has been verified by tests, and it is worth noting that it coped with all of them.

This thermal cover does not need special washing and cleaning - in case of contamination, the stain is removed with a regular sponge.

Padding (backing)

Most often, felt or foam rubber (foam) is used for stuffing, the thickness should be from four to eight millimeters. These two materials are good for ironing, but there are differences between them.

Padding made of foam (foam rubber) provides a hard surface - the iron glides better and easier on the surface. Felt surface is soft and smooth, dents appear. There are combined options - there is both felt and foam.

Choosing a mount

There are two ways to attach (dress) the cover to the ironing board:

  • elastic;
  • lacing.

Most of the covers are already made with an elastic band, but if you really want to, you can find it on a lace. The rubber-fastened covers are very convenient to use as they simply pull on and attach to the edges of the ironing board. However, this will not work if your board has an iron stand attached. If the stand is detachable, then it can be used with an elastic band.

There will be no such problems with lacing, it will do in any case. Allows you to adjust the tension of the cover.

Useful Tips

You can, just in case, familiarize yourself with the tips before choosing each type of coverage.

  • When buying universal covers, there is one main rule - the lining must be at least 2 millimeters thick. Otherwise, there is a possibility that when ironing, the surface of the board will be imprinted on the clothes.
  • A cotton cape must contain at least 50% natural ingredients. This information is on the label. Do not choose a product with a defiant and bright ornament, when exposed to high temperatures, it can put a mark on the laundry.
  • The Teflon coating must be made up of three pieces that are glued to each other - the Fibretex backing.
  • The foam cover must be at least 3 millimeters thick. Ideal, of course, would be 5 millimeters plus felt as a backing.
  • The best option in terms of price-quality ratio would be a non-stick cover. There is one important rule - such a cover must necessarily contain a special impregnation.
    • When buying a metallized case, it will be difficult to find a cheaper option. Their cost is usually high. Focus on promotions and discounts in stores.
    • When choosing a mount, pay attention to covers with an elastic band. They are more comfortable to change than drawstring.
    • Although the choice of coatings for the ironing surface in shops and supermarkets is large, most often these products are guided by new models of boards. The old ones may not fit.
    • Be sure to take with you the measurements of your board that you took.
    • Check out the reviews for covers from different manufacturers. This will help determine the required parameters. Experts advise buying products from the same brand as the existing ironing board.

The information provided will be useful for you, will help you in your choice. Now it will not be difficult to find the right cover for you.
