Sometimes in the store, instead of crepe paper, the seller gives a roll with the inscription "corrugated" and vice versa. Naturally, the question arises as to whether there is a difference between the two. To understand, you need to understand what crepe is and how it differs.

Features of crepe paper

Crepe paper looks like a canvas with small folds (waves), like an accordion. Sold in rolls and sheets. It first appeared in the second half of the 19th century. Used as a lining to maintain the shape of ladies' hats. As soon as industrial production was established, the scope of application of crepe paper expanded. It began to be used for packaging fragile items and glass containers. The material has demonstrated excellent shock absorption properties, absorbing impacts ("cushion effect"). Today crepe paper is used not only for packaging. It is also actively used in floristry and needlework..

Crepe is obtained by running a cellulose web impregnated with glue through special equipment. The result is an elastic and moisture resistant paper with fine waves. Most often, recycled or waste paper is used as raw materials. Manufacturers produce crepe of a wide range of colors and monochromatic. This is due to the fact that it is difficult to draw a drawing on crumpled paper. This is usually something as simple as stripes or peas.

In addition to elasticity and aesthetic appearance, the following positive qualities can be distinguished:

  • wide range of;
  • affordability;
  • environmental friendliness and safety, can be used for children's creativity;
  • paper holds its shape perfectly, you can use it as a stuffing;
  • strength.

As a disadvantage, it is worth noting the fragility. The material is quite fragile, easily torn, requires accuracy in work, and quickly fade in the sun. Crafts accumulate dust, which is difficult to get rid of: moisture and a vacuum cleaner can ruin the thing.

Difference from corrugated

There is a lot of controversy about whether these two types of paper are different or the same thing. It would be more correct to start with terminology. Translated from French, "corrugate" means "to press the pattern obtained by multiple folding of the sheet." And crepe paper literally translates from English as "corrugated paper". It turns out they are the same thing. Nevertheless, crepe is distinguished as a separate type or, more correctly, a subspecies of corrugated paper.

The corrugation has clearer and deeper waves (folds), it is stiffer in itself... It is used for packaging large items and the production of corrugated board. Crepe has small folds, has increased softness, excellent stretching. The scope of application is wider, it is more suitable for packaging small items, creating artificial flowers and crafts.
