Doors are not only a functional addition to a room, but also an important design element. Therefore, you should carefully approach their choice. We will tell you how to make the right decision and create a beautiful interior in this article.

Views

The modern market offers a wide variety of doors of all shapes and types. When choosing a model for a hall, it is important to know that there are several types of structures.

  • Corpulent. Such models are considered the most durable, strong and reliable. Moreover, they have better noise and sound insulation. However, they are also heavy and expensive.
  • Hollow or honeycomb... The frame of such models is made of wood, and inside they are left empty or can be filled with filler made of cardboard, synthetic or insulating materials.
  • Combined. Such models are half made of natural wood, plastic and other materials, and the second part is glass in a frame.

Mechanisms

There are several types of interior door mechanisms. Let's consider each type separately.

Swing

This is the classic and most common look. The door opens in an arc, which is the door jamb. There are several types of swing doors on the modern market.

  • Single leaf. Such doors are most often found in apartments, since they perfectly fulfill their function and take up a minimum of space.
  • Bivalve. This subtype is divided into two groups, namely classic doors with two identical parts and different-sex models. The latter are more common at the entrances to apartment buildings or industrial premises, but not often in living rooms.
  • Pendulum. It can be both single and double-leaf models. Their distinguishing feature is that they open in both directions. Experts note that such doors are the most traumatic, therefore they do not recommend installing them in houses with small children.
  • Stables. Such doors are considered a type of double-leaf models. They differ in that a window is built into one of the canvases. Such a door is perfect for installation between the kitchen and the living room, since it will be possible to set the table without opening the door. You can simply transfer a dish from one room to another through the window.

Swing options are distinguished by a long service life, excellent sound insulation and ease of installation. Moreover, the price of such a mechanism is the lowest. However, such doors can be traumatic. They can also clap due to drafts.

And their main disadvantage is that a relatively large space is needed for opening, which is sometimes not enough in small apartments.

Sliding

The canvases of such models slide down on top of each other along the walls. There are cascading models where some canvases are fixed and do not move. They are classified according to the following criteria:

  • number of canvases - there may be only one canvas, two or more, if the doorway is quite large;
  • the location of the guides - rails can be located above, below or both above and below;
  • position of the retractable blade - when the doors move, closing each other, then this is a coupe model; the second option - the canvases are hidden in the wall, such models are called a pencil case, while the second option looks more attractive.

The main advantage of sliding structures is saving space. Moreover, such models are not dangerous for children. However, such options are more expensive than swing doors, their installation is more difficult and requires more work and time. In addition, the rails on the floor can become a place for small debris and dust to collect.

Such doors do not have a long service life, breakdowns of the leading rails often occur, so you should carefully approach their choice. To establish open models, a free wall is required where the canvas will move.

Below you can see an example of double sliding doors.

Foldable

Such models consist of two or more canvases that fold like an accordion. Classic doors with two sections are called "book", and options with a large number of leaves - "accordion" or louvered doors. As a rule, the guides are installed from the top. These structures are the most economical, for their installation you do not need a place for opening or a free section of the wall. However, they narrow the doorway, thereby reducing the space for the passage.

And the more canvases, the more space the door will take when folded, and the less space will be left for the passage. Such options have poor sound insulation and thermal insulation, since there are many cracks in them.

This problem can be solved with the help of additional airtight gaskets, but it will not be possible to achieve the same level as with classic swing doors.

Materials (edit)

As a rule, doors are made from natural wood, chipboard, MDF, veneer or plywood. However, there are many options available in tempered glass, plastic, PVC and metal. Let's consider the most common options.

  • Natural wood. This is the most popular material. Any species can be used, but ash and oak are considered the most durable. This is due to their density, beautiful appearance and long service life. Spruce and pine are cheaper counterparts, but such materials can deform due to moisture.
  • Veneer and eco-veneer. These models are made of pressed wood. They have the same characteristics as the models made of natural wood. However, they can fade when exposed to sunlight.
  • Metal. Metal doors are quite lightweight and durable. They are finished with various materials, for example, it can be artificial leather or veneer. Moreover, they are decorated with glass, patterns or stained-glass windows, so at first glance it is not clear that the model is made of metal.
  • Plastic. Such models are durable, moisture resistant, good noise insulation and easy to clean. However, they scratch easily.
  • Glass... These doors look stylish and original. Glass visually enlarges the room, so they are often used for small rooms. There is a wide variety of designs for glass models. It can be frosted, tinted, mirrored, transparent or stained glass. Moreover, the glass is often decorated with a sandblasted pattern. Glass models have the following advantages:
    • practicality;
    • durability;
    • moisture resistance;
    • ease of care.

Design

Hall doors can be made in any traditional or contemporary style. These can be as strict models without any decor, as well as bright and original designs with non-standard designs. Doors are decorated with carvings, metal and glass inserts, lamination, painting or varnishing. Door hardware is also an element of decor and can be made in antique style or in a modern laconic style. When choosing doors it is important to consider the general style of the room, otherwise the door will stand out and spoil the overall look of the interior design.

Consider popular destinations.

  • Vintage styles. This is Baroque, Rococo, Empire or Victorian style. To make the doors look beautiful and organic in such an interior, you should give your preference to the classic swing options. An interesting solution will be models with an arch. Models in such styles are decorated with inlay and all kinds of carvings. Gold or copper fittings are best. In terms of material, natural wood is ideal.

Cheaper counterparts are imitation of noble wood. The most beautiful colors are white or dark brown woods.

  • Modern directions... For hi-tech, minimalism, techno and loft styles, sliding or folding options are perfect. Glass models, which can be made of transparent, tinted or mirror glass, will complement the interior well. The fittings should be laconic and not attract the eye. In these styles, simplicity is valued, and the main decoration is brightness and brilliance.

However, another solution would be plain doors with a glossy surface or aged options. The color can be any, but it must match the color scheme of the interior.

  • Classic style and country. For such interiors, it is better to choose a model made of natural wood or with its imitation. Models can be decorated with carvings, glass with patterns and inserts of small rhinestones or panels. In such interiors, swing options are more common, but other types of mechanisms are also suitable.
  • Ecostyle and oriental interiors... For such styles, doors made of any materials are suitable, the main thing is that they imitate more natural wood. The best solution will be sliding and folding structures. They will make the interior more original.
