Traditionally, a brick wall in the interior of the living room is associated with the loft style. It is preferred by people with good taste and non-trivial views on design. But do not think that such a wall will fit only into an ultra-fashionable design. It can become a real highlight of the entire interior and help create a unique author's project in the most ordinary apartment.

Advantages and disadvantages

A brick wall has a number of advantages that cannot be ignored.

  • Gives uniqueness. Such an interior cannot be called standard or boring in any way. Whatever wallpaper or other finish you compare to a real brick wall, it will lose to it. After all, this is not an imitation of natural material, but a real brick.
  • Possibility to choose a color. Despite the fact that the brick has its own shade (one of the tones of the orange-brown scale is even named after it), it can be given a completely different look. In most cases, the choice falls on white, gray, milky or other similar colors. But no one will forbid you to experiment and paint a brick wall, for example, blue.
  • Compatibility with other interior items. A brick wall can become just a background on which you place paintings, photographs or posters, or it can remain completely "bare" without any decorative elements.
  • Furniture against the background of such a wall looks especially expressive and even brutal. Separately, it is worth noting the possibility of placing a fireplace (even an electric one) against its background.Neither wallpaper nor plasterboard trim will be able to emphasize the beauty of fire and the comfort created by a fireplace, as a brick will do. In such a living room, you just want to wrap yourself in a blanket and drink hot cappuccino, peering into the flames.
  • Possibility of reconstruction. If the wallpaper or plaster has fallen into disrepair, then repair is indispensable. Brickwork, on the other hand, will only look better and more authentic if any piece of it suddenly falls off.
  • If the brick was painted, then you can easily restore this area. You just need to clean it, prime it and cover it with paint of the same color.
  • Ability to change color. After pasting the wallpaper, you will no longer be able to change their color or texture. Everything is different with such an unfinished, at first glance, wall. It can be repainted in any color. This is especially true if there are children in the house. Little fidgets love to decorate the walls with their own drawings so much.
  • Ease of maintenance. Neither drywall, nor wallpaper, nor plaster like moisture. It is difficult to predict how this or that material will behave if it gets wet. In the case of a brick wall, these problems are not. Even if you walk over it with a wet rag or accidentally spill a glass of water, nothing will happen to it. Dust and other contaminants are removed from the surface quickly and easily.

But the brick wall also has some drawbacks that you need to find out before you dare to make such a bold decision.

  • Price. If you decide to use natural brick for masonry, then be prepared for the fact that such a design will cost you more than usual wallpapering. Manufacturers also offer more budgetary options for creating an imitation of a brick wall in the interior of a city apartment. It can be artificial stone, slabs, and even wallpaper. But they still won't give the impression of a real brick.
  • Labor intensity. It is necessary to understand that you will need to do not just masonry, but make it look beautiful and aesthetically pleasing. This can be difficult to achieve without relevant experience. Therefore, entrust this work to a professional. In this case, the brick wall will serve you for many years and will delight the eye.
  • The complexity of dismantling. According to this parameter, it is significantly inferior to wallpaper. The latter can be simply torn off the walls and new ones can be glued on. Of course, you will have to clean, prime, and maybe even putty the wall, but this is still easier than dismantling the brickwork. Therefore, think carefully if you want to live with such a brick wall for a long time.

If in doubt, it is better to resort to simpler options for creating a brick wall in your interior - its imitations.

    Finishing materials

Today, the illusion of a brick wall can be created in several ways. Each of them has its own advantages and disadvantages.

    Brickwork

Actually, we talked about it above, considering the advantages and disadvantages. Note that for interiors in an industrial style or loft, the wall can be left almost untreated.

This will emphasize their brutality and primacy.

To create a more sophisticated composition, use a special acrylic lacquer for bricks. Natural brick has a porous structure, so do not be surprised that it will absorb paint and varnish material well. To create the desired effect and shade, you will have to process the wall in several layers.

Another danger in using masonry is its weight. The additional load falls not only on the floor, but also on the wall. This must be taken into account when designing.

    Facing brick

Compared to masonry this method has several advantages.

    • It's lighter. This means that there will be no additional load on the supporting structures. This is especially important if you already have laminate or parquet flooring. It can deform under the weight of the brickwork. Facing bricks will not create such problems.
    • It is thinner. The brick is quite deep. Accordingly, it should be borne in mind that such masonry will invariably "eat" part of the space. If the room is spacious, then there is nothing wrong with that. In rooms that are modest in terms of squareness, such a decrease will be very noticeable.
    • Ease of installation. Even a beginner can handle facing bricks. The main thing is to carefully prepare the surface.
    • Texture. No matter how high-quality and voluminous the wallpaper with a brick pattern may be, it will still be visible. Facing brick will not give itself out immediately, especially if you make facing from wall to wall. In this case, it will not be possible to understand what its real depth is.

    Plaster

Masters of their craft are able to create an imitation of a brick wall from an ordinary plastered surface. Using special tools, they literally sculpt every brick. But this is a rather laborious job. Besides it will be necessary to pay special attention to the finishing, so that the wall really resembles brickwork.

    Wallpaper

On the market of finishing materials, you can find a lot of ready-made wallpaper options with a brick pattern. They differ not only in their design, but also in quality. For the wall in the living room, it is better to look for non-woven or vinyl wallpaper with the desired print.

The first option is more preferable. The thing is, these wallpapers have a good texture. They easily imitate not only stone, but also other natural materials.

While wallpaper is not a complete replacement for brickwork, there are a number of advantages to this choice. They are easy to glue on your own and easy to remove whenever you want. Non-woven wallpaper can be repainted in the desired colors more than once, which significantly extends their service life.

Modern high-quality wallpaper can be cleaned with a damp cloth. This makes it easier to keep your home clean.

    Color spectrum

Do not think that brickwork can only be done in its original color. There are a lot of design techniques to diversify and transform an ordinary brick. What color should you give preference to? First of all, be guided by your taste and desires.

We will give you time-tested options.

    • Natural brick tone. Even if you want to leave the brick in its original form, it is worth taking care of the finishing. Special products will protect it from moisture, mold and cracking. It is not recommended to decorate the entire wall in this color if the room is small. The brick will visually reduce it. But also in spacious rooms, adhere to a sense of proportion. One brick wall is sufficient.

The rest of the walls should serve as a good background against which the brick will show itself in all its glory.

    • White. But this color, on the contrary, will visually expand the space. It can be safely used even for small living rooms (and even hallways). On the market, you can find a lot of options for shades and tones of this palette. It can be pearl or milky, and even a white-gray shade. Pay special attention to the choice of varnish. The final result will depend on it. You can choose from matte, semi-gloss and glossy options. It all depends on what effect you want to achieve.
    • Beige. Very nice and cozy color. Natural wood will look great against its background (for example, furniture, shelves and racks). You can also place pictures or a composition of photographs of your family on a beige brick wall.
    • Gray. It should be understood that this shade is cold. And if there is a lot of it, then the room will not be cozy, warm and homely. But this does not mean that it must be abandoned altogether. Use the 60-30-10 rule. This means that the primary color should be 60%, the secondary color should be 30% and 10% should be devoted to accents.
    • Bright colours. Not everyone will decide on such an experiment. But if you are creating an interior in the style of pop art, then such a design will be quite appropriate.
    • The shades are dark. Here you have to be extremely careful so that instead of a stylish interior you don't end up with a horror movie set. To do this, consider lighting. The wall should not remain in the twilight either in the dark or in the daytime. This can be achieved with additional lighting and multiple lighting scenarios. These can be wall sconces, LED lighting or spotlights in the wall area.

    Style solution

It is impossible to imagine a traditional Soviet interior with such a wall in the living room. Today, she feels comfortable in many styles and directions.

      • Loft. It is in it that you can most often find a brick wall of a natural color or with the illusion of unfinished plaster.
      • Industrial. Massive iron structures, rough floor and wall finishes and, of course, bricks. All these are elements of this style. The main task of the designers is to turn this unusual design into a living space. It should be comfortable and even cozy.
      • Pop Art. We have already mentioned it. Bright plaster walls and even graffiti on them are able to support the style of this fashionable and daring trend.

      How to choose a design?

First of all, you need to build on the general style of the apartment. The hall should not be a separate object, but laconically continue the general idea. Therefore, first of all, decide on the general style of the apartment.

We have provided many ideas for brick wall design. It is difficult to give universal advice on which one is right for you. But it should be understood that a brick wall has not only its advantages, but also imposes certain obligations. All furniture and other wall decorations should be in good harmony with this "star" of your living room.

Do not forget about the individual characteristics of your premises. For example, a narrow hall will seem even longer if the far narrow wall is finished with bricks.

      Beautiful ideas

The brick wall is an integral part of the loft style. Such an interior always looks original and stylish.

A white brick wall will create coziness and will not resemble a dilapidated building. It is pleasant to be and live in such an interior.

A brick wall is sometimes additionally decorated with plaster, but at the same time leaving untreated areas. One gets the impression that the renovation was done long ago and the plaster fell off. But the task of the designer is to make such a design look cozy and cute, and not like an abandoned attic.
