In an apartment or in a house, the living room is always the central room where holidays, events, meetings take place. Since the whole family meets in this place, in most cases it is decorated in neutral colors, trying to make everyone comfortable there.

To create a beautiful, stylish and at the same time cozy interior in the hall, all its components must be in harmony, making up a single whole... This applies to walls, floors, furniture and, of course, the ceiling. There are many ways to decorate the ceiling area, and one of the most interesting is a stretch ceiling.

Advantages and disadvantages

Like any other design option, a stretch ceiling has both pros and cons.

Let's start with the positives.

  • Long service life. With proper operation, it may not lose its characteristics for about two decades.
  • Correctly stretched canvas with an interesting design looks very impressive.
  • Does not suffer from the gulf of neighbors from above... It is enough to call the master, who will gently drain the accumulated liquid, and the canvas will take on its original shape.
  • The material from which the canvases are made, sealed, environmentally friendly and non-flammable.
  • Stretch ceiling - more than a budget option, especially based on its long service life.
  • Doesn't “eat up” space, since it can be fixed at a distance of 3 cm from the surface. Thanks to this, it can be installed even in apartments with low ceiling heights.

As far as disadvantages are concerned, a number of factors relate to them.

  • The material has an odor that persists for some time after the ceiling is installed. It later wears off.
  • The tension web can easily suffer from mechanical damage - cuts, ruptures. In such a case, you can contact a specialist who will patch.
  • The need to join the canvases if they are smaller than the ceiling. The joints are often clearly visible. Therefore, it is better to choose a large size canvas.
  • The tightness of the material results in poor air permeability. For some, this may turn out to be a significant disadvantage.
  • The canvas can sag over time - by 1-1.5 cm.

Manufacturing material

Experts in the field of interior design are unanimous - the best material for a stretch ceiling in an apartment is PVC film with the addition of a plasticizer. As for the classification, there are such types of ceilings as:

  • mirror;
  • glossy;
  • matte;
  • fabric (satin).

    The first is the most beautiful, but also very capricious. It is not easy to look after him, because there should not be any stains on the mirror surface. Washing is possible only with soapy water, no abrasive substances can be used. But on the other hand, such ceilings visually expand the space, giving it additional height, depth and volume, which is extremely valuable in rooms with a low ceiling height, but spacious in area.

    The same applies to gloss, but such a canvas has its own specifics: if a mirror surface reflects everything clearly, then a glossy one is blurry as if in a fog. Glossy ceilings look great in small living rooms, giving them airiness. With this design, colors are most often chosen light and neutral - white, milky, beige, coffee with milk, light gray. You can also make the ceiling dark, but keep in mind that this can create discomfort for some people.

    Matte canvases do not visually increase the height of the room, however they create an atmosphere of comfort and tranquility, moreover, they look very noble.

    A fabric cloth is the best option for wooden houses. It is undesirable to use it in city apartments, since it is leaky and not protected from leakage.

    There are also combined canvases - both in color and in material. There can be coverings of different geometric shapes.

    Color spectrum

    A single-level stretch ceiling is the optimal solution for a city apartment with a standard layout. Two levels or more will "eat up" a large number of centimeters in height, which is why they are used either in private houses, or in apartments with high walls, or in loft-style interiors.

    In the case when light colors are chosen for the walls, a dark ceiling will add volume and depth to the room. Dark shades of the same range look especially impressive, for example, light coffee on the walls and chocolate on the ceiling.

    Classics for single-level stretch ceilings are white and milky colors... Regardless of the style in which the hall is decorated, these shades will organically fit into the composition. The only combination that should be avoided when choosing a white ceiling is white walls. Although the Scandinavian style provides for and strongly approves of such a combination.

    To decorate a neutrally decorated hall, you can choose an option in which it is the ceiling that will become the visual center of the room, attracting all the attention to yourself. The possibilities of modern design are so great that you can create any composition - from a starry galaxy, shimmering in all shades from burgundy to glossy black, to a color gradient in which tones smoothly flow into one another.

    The more sunny the room, the cooler the shades can be used in its design and vice versa. In the case when the living room simultaneously serves as a bedroom, it is undesirable to make the ceiling bright and unnecessarily decorate it.

    If you decide to decorate a room in one color scheme, it is a good idea to use contrast of textures. Let the walls be matte and the ceiling glossy or embossed. You can zone it by dividing it into two or more parts. When zoning, a two-tone ceiling looks good, it can be made both contrasting and not.

    Which backlight should I choose?

    Single-level ceilings need lighting just like everyone else. There are several lighting options:

    • chandelier;
    • spotlights mounted in the canvas;
    • LED Strip Light.

    Nothing prevents you from combining these views, turning on and off, if necessary, one or another backlight option. For example, bright "overhead" lighting is ideal when a family event is taking place in the living room, while soft spot lighting is ideal for a quiet evening.

    Today, there are a huge number of types and types of lamps; for each style in the interior, you can choose an original and at the same time organic option.

    Styles

    Different types of canvases are suitable for different styles. If your living room is decorated in a classic style, then the ceiling should be made the same - neutral, elegant, refined. It is better to make the base white or milky. Zoning, discreet print, geometric shapes are acceptable, but the result should be discreet and restrained. The ceiling in the classical style does not draw attention to itself, but is one of the components of the overall composition.

    Art Nouveau is characterized by bright colors - red, ocher, burgundy, and combinations thereof. Accordingly, the ceiling can be made in the appropriate color scheme. And it is advisable to avoid a large number of sharp corners, let there be smooth lines.

    Photo printing on the ceiling canvas will decorate the living room in Provence or country style... Of course, the print should not "hammer" the rest of the design, but be part of the overall composition. Small flowers are ideal for Provence, a medium-sized geometric print for country. White matte ceilings with imitation of staining are also appropriate.

    To decorate an interior in a high-tech or loft style, white canvases are suitable, as well as brown, gray and even black - if there is sufficient wall height. A matte texture is preferable, however mirrored ceiling can also look very impressive.

    Pop art and ethnicity are styles where color and redundancy riot. The main thing is not to turn the room into a box, where the walls will not differ from the ceiling. Zoning, centering, a combination of lighting options - everything is appropriate.

    For the Baroque style, a single-level ceiling is not quite a suitable option. The abundance of decor and details requires at least two levels of coverage, which means sufficient height for this. And if your ceiling has a standard height, consider before choosing this style for your living room.

    Beautiful options

    The stretch ceiling is very beautiful in the interior, and this can be seen in the examples:

    • loft style assumes a matte texture and spot lighting;
    • photo printing and mirror surface - an original combination;
    • roses are appropriate always and everywhere, including on the ceiling;
    • bright two-tone ceiling with two lighting options;
    • the glossy surface is always effective;
    • no less spectacular is the mirrored ceiling.
