The choice of a stylistic solution when decorating a home plays an important role in creating a certain atmosphere. One of the non-standard approaches to the arrangement is to take the loft style as the basis. Harsh and brutal, it is the best fit for the interior design of those who are tired of traditional types of living room decoration. In this article, we will consider the nuances of the interior design of a loft-style living room.

Specific traits

Any stylistic design decision has its own vision of the interior. As for the loft, its resources are truly unique: such a room should give the appearance of an inhabited industrial facility. This is a kind of atmosphere of industrial glamor, adaptation of the living room to a workshop, hangar or garage.

Here it is possible to combine the old with the actual, for example, the presence of the latest technology and expensive furniture against the background of rough concrete or unplastered walls.

Ideally, the room should have an open or so-called studio layout. Such a living room should have a high ceiling, close to the industrial type. In addition, the zoning of individual functional areas should be performed in the room, including painting surfaces in contrasting colors. Other indispensable attributes of a loft are interior elements such as factory communications, pipes, and also a flaunted cable.

The loft-style living room is original in its own way. The main motto of the arrangement is “creating a home for a bohemian representative in an industrial facility”. Comfort should be limited to a minimum of finishing, but it is extremely important that in the interior of the room:

  • there were noticeable beams;
  • water or gas pipes were visible;
  • there were panoramic or large windows;
  • the openness of space was observed;
  • open zoning of the inhabited islands was traced;
  • the coarse decoration and elements of comfort were combined.

    In fact, when entering such a room, one should get the impression that an art worker (artist, actor, musician) lives in the apartment with a sense of taste and style. Today, the interior of living rooms in this direction often resembles art workshops, or even galleries.

    Color spectrum

    The palette of shades of the style of brutal self-expression gravitates towards the tones typical for industrial facilities. In fact, it can be either neutral paints, which include white, gray, concrete, asphalt and black, and brick, woody tones. Sometimes the interior of the hall is done in light colors. Color combinations are harmonious and calm in their own way.

    Usually, bright colors of the palette are used to accentuate the space... These are paintings of canvases, graffiti, upholstery of chairs, the color of seat covers or even living greens, the color of floor lamps. The style tends to be used, in addition to the base paints, such colors as terracotta, metallic and burgundy lavender. Someone manages to use a muted blue color in the design of such an interior.

    However, if you really choose the range according to all the rules, then it is preferable to choose furniture of chocolate or gray color. Wherein the tone of the used shades should not be sharp and cheap: their purity and depth, naturalness are important... Somewhere in the design, a woody-marsh color is involved, sometimes it is a combination of gray-marsh with white or light wood.

    Finishing options

    Loft-style living room interior decoration should convey the effect of a certain negligence, coupled with brutal chic. Moreover, for different types of surfaces, it can be different, which is how rational space zoning is achieved. The interior can provide for the presence of columns, wall partitions.

    In addition, projects with a fireplace are interesting, through which an atmosphere of home comfort is created in the room.

    Walls

    In contrast to other areas of interior design, the wall coverings of the loft should give off a slight neglect. In view of this not only rough plaster and concrete finish are welcome here, but also aged brickwork... Moreover, it is quite acceptable for the brick to appear chipped, cracked, and sometimes sloppy.

    It is important to create an industrial environment in the hall, the background of which is created with just such cladding options.

    There is no need to level, plaster or whitewash. However, the desired effect can be enhanced through those communications that are usually hidden under the finish. If you have the skills or finance, you can decorate the brick wall with a graffiti pattern. As for the typical wallpapers, they are not very appropriate for the embodiment of the loft style.

    If you select roll products in the spirit of the loft style, then they should be expensive and embossed, successfully imitating the desired type of wall surface.

    It is worth noting that the walls should contrast with each other. It is undesirable that they are all either concrete or only brick. Usually, an accent part of the wall is allocated for the brickwork, which is made out for a resting place, a TV area, a music corner, or a kind of mini-gallery of photos in a laconic framework. The wall decoration itself should seem somewhat unfinished, while at the same time giving off minimalism.

    Ceiling

    The loft-style ceiling is different from the usual decor that we are used to seeing in modern living rooms.This is, first of all, a complete disregard for stucco moldings, moldings and complex design structures using a stretch film or drywall. Someone prefers to paint the ceiling, other customers use wood for its decoration. However, regardless of the choice of design, unmasked pipes should be located on the ceiling of the living room.

    The joints of the slabs or floors in the design of the ceiling are left untreated, as are the communication connections with the cladding. The ceiling is painted with white or sandy paint. In this case, the beams can be of a contrasting tone. There is no need for decor, which is usually used to design a different style.

    The best decor will be, for example, black or bronze pipes with lamps located on them.

    Floor

    Creative style living room flooring can be an option with varnished boards. Besides, priority is given to concrete floors, which allows you to simply fill the floor with concrete, barely sand and level the slabs... However, not everyone is ready to put up with such coverage. Therefore, in some cases, laminate or linoleum is purchased for the floor, someone makes it from artificial stone.

    Considering that the carpet will be located only in the area of the sofa or fireplace, it is preferable to take care of the floor insulation in advance. When choosing a color scheme, they are repelled by the color of the used wall cladding.

    It should not be allowed to merge into a single color spot, as this visually reduces the height of the walls and turns a stylish interior into an uncomfortable room with hastily assembled design.

    Space zoning

    A loft is considered a rejection of stamps, which is why furniture for arranging a living room is not only selected to order, but also installed in a special way. At the same time, it is customary to use zoning techniques, conventionally dividing the open space of a room into separate islands, each of which differs in its functionality. Zoning can be done in different ways, for example:

    • by means of separate or auxiliary lighting of each functional area;
    • using floor coverings of different types or colors;
    • creating visual partitions to limit areas for different purposes with furniture;
    • collecting the elements of arrangement of each corner closer, visually creating the effect of islands against the background of open space;
    • denoting zones of different functionality by means of contrasting wall cladding;
    • using accents contrasting to the main design that stand out against the background of the walls or floor.

    For example, you can zone the space using stone and concrete for the floor... Nice separates an open-type room and a bar counter, denoting the working and dining areas. Screens in a loft are extremely rare. Creative decor can also help with zoning: even pictures attached to the wall will already indicate that the island serves a specific purpose.

    The fireplace area can be equipped in different ways, it all depends on the nuances of the room itself, its width, length, location of windows and doors. It can be part of the guest space or act as a separate corner where you can put an armchair and floor lamp. You can highlight the fireplace with different cladding. For example, it can be a ledge lined with brick, clinker, stone. Sometimes this part of the room is decorated with concrete.

    Finishing for zoning must be selected correctly. For example, it is not necessary to lay out all the walls with bricks - 1 brick accent looks more interesting against the background of concrete walls and blinds. You can highlight the columns with concrete or brick (if any). In addition, you can accent the walls with plaster.

    Organization of lighting

    As for lighting, its level in a loft should be equal to that which is usually found in an industrial workshop.In view of this, lighting devices must be appropriate. Their design can be panel, linear, in addition, a creative chandelier (say, the so-called spider model with many bulbs) can decorate the ceiling space of a loft-style living room.

    Lighting devices can and should indicate with all their appearance that they belong to an extraordinary design direction. In view of this, models for street lamps, as well as lamps in the form of downspouts with lamps without closed shades, are quite appropriate here.

    Lighting can be not only ceiling, but also floor and table. Lighting fixtures come in a variety of shapes and sizes.

    Their number may vary, taking into account the direction of the light flux. For example, it can be either a row of several identical lamps of a laconic shape, or a row of spotlights. Besides, on the ceiling beams of a loft-style living room, spots with an adjustable angle of inclination of the luminous flux look great... The arrangement of lighting devices depends on the placement of the inhabited islets of the hall.

    As a rule, each of them is complemented by its own lighting. For example, your own lamp can illuminate the sofa seating area, lounge chair, bar counter, as well as the work area if the living room is part of an open-plan studio-style apartment. Sometimes the problem of the direction of the light flux is solved by turning the spots located in 2 rows on the ceiling.

    In other cases, the project provides for the placement of lighting on pipes located below the ceiling.

    Furniture selection

    If for other stylistic solutions of the interior a typical set of upholstered furniture is selected, then to recreate the atmosphere of a loft, a creative approach is required - this is a combination of the incompatible, for example, using metal shelves in the arrangement against the background of a luxurious sofa with leather upholstery or an office-type chair equipped with wheels. However, the furniture itself should not be much.

    It is important that the design uses a minimal set with a maximum emphasis on luxury and functionality.

    The choice of each piece of furniture must be approached thoroughly. You have to take into account that furniture should be placed along the walls or in the corners. The style clearly limits the use of bulky furniture sets and insists that furniture should not clutter up the aisle. It is important to leave as much space as possible to create the effect of spaciousness and separate functional islands.

    However, along with typical types of furniture, a wicker chair and a fancy glass table can appear in the interior composition of the loft. The key limitation when choosing furniture is a minimum of small fittings. - the style does not need excessive pomp. As far as technology is concerned, it must be up-to-date and expensive.

    If a bar with a counter is provided in the living room, the furniture for its arrangement must correspond to that used to decorate the guest area. It is impossible to combine furniture of different status in the interior of the hall: this makes the interior composition cheaper and makes it unnatural. It is important that the furniture is of high quality and high quality. If this is a combined type room, in addition to a sofa and armchairs, it can be equipped with a dining group consisting of a small table and laconic chairs with leather upholstered seats and backs.

    As for the unity of shape and color, the loft is not so pretentious about this. In the design of the living room of this interior direction, you can combine the rough wooden furniture of the dining group with bar stools with metal legs of an unusual configuration.

    The proximity of metal and wood is welcomed: such furniture perfectly conveys the desired atmosphere.

    Sometimes they use laconic kitchen benches in design. But if in other interior styles they are used for their intended purpose, then in a loft they help to create the effect of a recent move. They are used, for example, as TV stands, creating the illusion of temporary use as a TV stand. Sometimes they put a picture, mirror or other object on them.

    Textiles and decor

    Usually, the loft style has no attachment to textiles - in such an interior it is almost never used. At best, the use of blinds is allowed, but in general, window decor is not welcome, because any curtains will conceal the illumination of the living room. A since the interior does not tolerate this at all, it will be necessary to make up for the lack of light with the help of single lamps.

    However, the absence of curtains makes it possible to draw attention to the decor. Graffiti, paintings or colorful posters are used here. The way this decor is positioned goes beyond the usual. For example, if in a classic interior paintings or panels are hung on the wall, then in a loft they are placed near the wall or placed on high metal stools near the walls in places of desired accents.

    Among other things, the loft uses textured wooden boxes or even barrels. It is not alien to this style to decorate the existing space with sculpture, the design of which may be somewhat detached from the general interior composition. In addition, picturesque canvases installed on the table or on the floor will perfectly fit into such a living room.

    Floor lamps with forged elements will also fit into the interior of the hall.

    In addition, decorative elements such as ordinary road signs will look quite organic in the design of a loft-style living room. Among other décor, it is worth noting old chests and clock mechanisms of sometimes strange design. As accessories, wine bottles and glassware located on the shelves or in the working area of the kitchen with which the living room is combined look good in an open-plan living room.

    As for the use of carpets and decorative pillows, it all depends on the wishes of the owners of the house. In general, carpets are really used in the arrangement, but such an accent can only be at the location of the sofa. In the rest of the space, the floor surface should not be covered by anything.

    The loft does not welcome pillows, but if they are added to the interior, then in a minimal amount and not too bright.

    Sometimes the atmosphere is created through the objects of hobby of a particular person. For example, it is quite natural for an artist to use pictures with their deliberately careless arrangement. Someone thinks it is logical to put even a bicycle in the room, and surprisingly sometimes it quite harmoniously fits into the interior of the living room. A photographer can decorate a space near a wall with photographs in black and white, someone orders reproductions of paintings by famous artists.

    If there is graffiti in the room, spray paint can be used. Floor vases, metal plates attached to the wall fit well into this style. In some cases, large candles or completely unusual installations become the decor. As for books, their quantity should not turn the living room into a study. Excluded are overly variegated upholstery and textile prints.

    Successful examples

    To have an idea of what a loft-style living room looks like, we suggest referring to the examples of the photo gallery. Better than words, they convey the atmosphere of an industrial facility, which is the basis for creating a style.
