Immersion in history

The history of Polish clothing deserves everyone's attention.

For many centuries, the land of the gentry was under the dome of the influence of the culture of other countries. For this reason, the Polish national costume was forced to go through several stages of development, in order to end up with what people of the twenty-first century can still observe.

The motives of Russia, Austria, Lithuania and Romania participated in the modification of the outfit. Thanks to such a variety, the costume turned out to be unique and original.

Polish traditional clothing was divided into three groups, which depended on the position of a person in society.

  • The nobility costume changed most often. The men watched the merchants coming from other countries and happily exploited some of the features of their clothes. It was the attire of the gentry that received the widest distribution and received the proud title of the nationwide. The costume was sewn from natural woolen fabric.
  • The same can be said about the city dress. Linen was used to create clothes for city dwellers.
  • The peasant costume was not changed.

The specifics of the Polish costume

The fabric suitable for making dresses was considered one of the main features of the national Polish clothing. The outfits for work were sewn from inexpensive materials - mainly sheep's wool and linen. And for ceremonial suits, a valuable woolen striped fabric was needed.

In each region of the country, the costumes were different from each other, but the main set was preserved everywhere.

  • Pants for men, skirt for women.
  • A corset, as usual, decorated with embroidery and picturesque ornaments.
  • Belt.
  • Spacious shirt.
  • Traditional Polish footwear is Kerpchi.
  • Headdress.
  • Various accessories.

The Poles had a great craving for luxury, so their national costume has always been distinguished by its beauty, which was created using embroidery with gold and silver threads. There were other decorative elements as well. Men sported with pleasure in magnificent outfits, as women lured the interested, admiring glances of the gentry with their clothes.

Color palette

There was real freedom for women in Poland! Every girl appreciates a variety of shades, and the Polish national costume fully satisfied the craving for everything beautiful. The patterns for women and men were intricate. Until now, they are able to catch the eye for a long time, so that a person looks at them with interest, thinking about what meaning the creator of the outfit put into his ornament.

The most popular colors were:

  • Red;
  • blue;
  • White;
  • yellow;
  • green;
  • Brown.

Girls from wealthy families often appeared before the gaze of those around them in rainbow dresses. Women preferred natural and floral ornaments, as many flowers had symbolic meaning. It was believed that the images of plants attracts good luck, strengthens family ties, protects against disease and poverty.

The suits for men also looked extremely attractive, but they did not stand out so brightly. The male outfit was decorated in peaceful colors - black, white, gray and brown.

Children's clothes differed only in size. The outfit for the kids retained all other features.

Shoes and jewelry

A special place was given to the headdress in the Polish national costume. The men tried to decorate their hat as much as possible - this helped to demonstrate the level of his income. Young girls put colorful kerchiefs on their heads, easily distinguishing the beauties from the rest. But married women forgot about headscarves. They were replaced by caps.

It's hard to imagine a Polish woman without jewelry. Girls loved to decorate their necks with massive red beads, voluminous earrings and chic bracelets. Red pieces created a passionate, enticing look, which, in addition to a cute multi-colored dress, looked charming.

Shoes were chosen so that they were in harmony with the outfit. The tops of the boots were high and medium. Each model had secure lacing, and the heels were equipped with metal horseshoes.
