It is customary to call artificial leather a polymer material obtained by applying a polyvinyl chloride or polyurethane liquid mass on paper and then hardening it in an oven. It has the same external characteristics as natural leather. It is used in the manufacture of clothing, footwear, furniture, technical and haberdashery products.

Benefits of leatherette

Products made from artificial leather look almost the same as products made from genuine leather. The advantages, as well as disadvantages, of this material in comparison with natural leather are enough to draw attention to it.

Its main pluses are:

  1. Low price in comparison with real leather.
  2. Higher durability, which makes faux leather jackets warmer, waterproof and breathable.
  3. Lack of unpleasant odor, which is typical for natural skin.
  4. A more attractive appearance, for example, the new leatherette jacket has a "perfect" surface compared to a genuine leather jacket, which shows the wiriness and uneven color.
  5. The ability to wash clothes made of this material by hand and in a washing machine using the delicate mode.
  6. And finally, leatherette leather products can be dyed in a variety of colors and shades, as well as have a variety of textures, which provides more opportunities for choice.

Considering all these advantages of leatherette, many leading companies in the production of leather products, especially for animal protectors, produce products from artificial leather.

The main disadvantages artificial leather are:

  1. The need for more accurate and thorough care of artificial leather products: they cannot be dried in the sun, on a radiator, near a fireplace or other heating appliances, as cracks and white spots may appear on their outer surface.
  2. Artificial leather does not tolerate temperatures below 10 degrees, therefore it is not recommended to walk in jackets made of such material in frosty weather, otherwise it will crack.
  3. The air tightness of leatherette products can cause discomfort to the wearer in the form of an unpleasant odor.
  4. The service life of artificial leather products is much shorter than that of genuine leather products.
  5. In addition, artificial material ignites much faster than natural leather. This quality, by the way, is used to check what kind of leather the product is made of.

Differences from eco-leather

Ecological leather or eco-leather is a material consisting of natural cotton and leather, artificial additives and synthetic polymers.

It is made by covering a base made of natural cotton with a polyurethane film. This method of application makes products made from ecological leather softer and more elastic. In addition, the cotton base provides the product with a higher strength: they do not stretch or break.

The polyurethane coating makes the product more wear-resistant and frost-resistant. It is also important that eco-leather does not contain various plasticizing additives that release various hazardous substances. It is because of this that this material is called "ECO" -skin. In jackets made of eco-leather, you can walk in frost down to - 35 degrees Celsius.

To others the advantages of ecological leather include:

  • excellent appearance, perfectly smooth material surface;
  • its air permeability and hydroscope;
  • high wear resistance and durability;
  • high frost resistance compared to artificial leather;
  • pleasant tactile sensations from eco-leather products: they are very soft, elastic and warm;
  • high rates of hypoallergenicity due to the absence of the greenhouse effect;
  • lack of unpleasant odor and toxic substances in the composition.

Thus, artificial leather is in many ways inferior to ecological, although it costs a little less. The latter, in turn, sometimes surpasses even natural leather in some qualities, although it is cheaper.

Models

Selection Tips

If you decide to buy a faux leather jacket, pay attention to the models of famous brands. As a rule, the more expensive the product, the more it is made of high-quality leatherette, and therefore, the longer it will serve you.

In addition, it is necessary to check the quality and serviceability of the fittings.

We advise young and young girls to choose cropped and fitted models with a zipper. They can be worn with trousers or with skirts.

Home care

There is nothing difficult in caring for a faux leather jacket.With proper care, a quality leatherette jacket will last long enough to get bored. To do this, first of all, you need to follow some rules "what can and can be done with an artificial leather jacket":

  1. Do not dry your jacket near heating appliances or under the bright sun, otherwise it will crack.
  2. Do not leave your jacket wet, for example, if you entered the premises and it was raining outside.
  3. You cannot iron a leatherette jacket with an iron, unless provided by the manufacturer.
  4. Do not use hard brushes or scrapers when cleaning.
  5. Do not expose the jacket to strong mechanical stress.
  6. The jacket must not be washed if it does not have a label stating that the product can be washed in a washing machine.
  7. When washing artificial leather jackets, do not use powders and other detergents with powerful solvents and chemicals, including bleach.

Leatherette made only on the basis of knitwear or cotton can be ironed with a steam iron at a low temperature

Recommendations for the correct and timely care of an artificial leather jacket:

  • If the jacket has a label with a wash permit, then feel free to load it into the machine and select the desired mode and temperature. The spin must be turned off, otherwise the jacket will deteriorate. In this case, be careful with household chemicals.
  • If both hand and machine wash is contraindicated for the jacket, take a bowl of water, dilute it with ordinary soap or powder, soak a soft cloth in it and wipe the dirty surface of the jacket with it. Then wipe with a tissue filled with clean water and wipe dry.
  • You need to dry the jacket by first hanging it on a hanger in a warm ventilated area.
  • It is better to store a leatherette jacket in a dry, cool and dark place.
