Upholstered furniture in a modern interior deserves special attention. It should not only be comfortable, but also meet all the requirements of the environment, as well as be multifunctional. Because of the limited space in modern apartments, fold-out sofas and armchair-beds are very much appreciated. We will talk about what options for modern kits are and how to arrange them correctly in today's article.

Features of the kits

At the end of the last century, the furniture industry in our country has undergone dramatic changes. New design options for residential and non-residential premises began to appear. Products on a metal frame, rocking chairs and much more began to be sold. Manufacturing technologies and materials have also undergone significant changes. Speaking of upholstered furniture, the first thing that comes to mind is a sofa and armchairs.

In most cases, they are placed in a recreation area. If the size of the room allows, then the set of chairs can exceed 2 copies. On such a structure, you can have a pleasant time after a hard day's work. The correct set of furniture will comfortably accommodate the whole family.

An important condition when choosing a kit is the style that is used in this room. By choosing the right combination of style, you can achieve harmony and comfort in a particular room. Mostly sets of 3 items are used (1 sofa and 2 armchairs, 2 sofas and 1 armchair, 2 armchairs and a bed). If the room is small and does not allow 3 items to be installed in it, then you can use 2 items of your choice (sofa and armchair, bed and armchair).

It is easiest to buy a ready-made furniture set, but this combination is not suitable for all styles. A striking example of this style is the loft. Due to its origin, it does not imply ready-made kits.

The designers have brought out several win-win combinations that will be appropriate in most rooms:

  • a combination of monochromatic and ornamental elements;
  • a combination of a neutral color with a bright;
  • combination of different neutral colors;
  • a combination of objects of unusual shades;
  • combining elements of the classics with other styles;
  • combination of different materials and textures.

Types of structures

Bedrooms and living rooms are equipped with a large amount of upholstered furniture. Among them there may be not only standard sofas and armchairs, but also other options for the elements we are accustomed to. For example, an ottoman can successfully play the role of a sleeping place.

Let's consider in more detail the types and types of upholstered furniture designs.

  • Folding sofas. In the absence of a large area, they are able to turn into a full-fledged sleeping place, thereby saving significant space in the room. This is a great solution for a combined living room with a bedroom. As for the convenience in a dream, many modern models of folding sofas are not much inferior to beds. Among them you can find many models with different mechanisms ("book", "accordion", "eurobook", "pantograph", "dolphin"). It is worth noting that folding sofas on legs are not the best choice for daily unfolding, it is much better and more convenient to choose a model on wheels.
  • Corner sofas. A very popular piece of furniture in a modern style. Thanks to a large palette of colors and materials, corner sofas fit well not only in the kitchen interior, but also in the living room. They are also equipped with folding mechanisms for transformation into a full double bed. Such a sofa will be able to help out the owners when placing late guests at night. Some models with large armrests can be equipped with a minibar in them. Such a piece of furniture will always be in the spotlight and is in great demand in the family. Behind it, you can watch the game of your favorite sports team in the company of friends, where the minibar will be an excellent addition, relax after a working day, and after spreading it out - you should sleep well.
  • Straight sofas can fit into any interior, if only the size of the room allows. They can be equipped with different types of armrests, both multilevel, folding, or without them at all.
  • Transformers - these are modern sofas with a metal frame in places of transformation. They come with different adjustable armrests, can be adjusted according to the position of the back and, as a rule, they are all folding.
  • Chair-bed. This could be another option for a spare bed. Most often, they use the same mechanisms as in folding sofas, so it will be quite comfortable to sleep on such an armchair.
  • Garden furniture. More recently, I moved from gardens to the interiors of apartments and houses. Among them, the most popular are interior items made of rattan. They create an atmosphere of relaxation and comfort for any room. In terms of comfort, they are far behind their modern counterparts, but in terms of style they are considered universal.

Such a frame is perfectly combined with fabric elements, and, if necessary, can be used for its original purpose.

  • Rocking chair. Today on sale you can find not only classic versions of such a chair, but also modern Scandinavian versions made of plastic. Such an armchair is perfect for a relaxed pastime while listening to your favorite music or reading books, but it is not advisable to drink tea or coffee on it.

Materials (edit)

The described interior items are made from different materials, which are subdivided into 2 main groups, namely:

  • natural;
  • artificial.

Models made from natural materials are much more expensive than artificial counterparts. Most often these are exclusive custom-made models. Not every ordinary consumer will be able to afford such options. Faux products are cheaper, but high-quality models won't come cheap.

As with all industries, the price will match the quality.

Different materials are used in the padding, frame and cladding, depending on the model and its cost. Padding materials include the following.

  • Foam rubber - This is one of the cheapest fillers, which has its own advantages. It does not grow moldy, which makes it safe for health, does not accumulate dust in itself and can take any shape. This material has several degrees of rigidity that you can choose for yourself. Sometimes in the name of the filling material you can see the inscription "PPU", which stands for polyurethane foam. They are one and the same substance.
  • Sintepon... It is also an inexpensive stuffing material that is very different from polyurethane foam. Only very soft structures can be made from it. The service life of a synthetic winterizer is about the same as that of foam rubber, and after that you have to completely pull the furniture or change it to a new one.
  • Holofiber. This material appeared during the development to improve the padding polyester. Holofiber looks like balls. With this design, products from the described material are well ventilated and have orthopedic properties.
  • Durafil. Products filled with this substance do not require a spring block. This material itself has spring properties. But if you want your furniture to serve you faithfully for as long as possible, then it is better to look for models where the spring block will be combined with this material, since they are much more durable.
  • Spandbond - this is one of the varieties of non-woven fabric. This material allows the upholstery to slide easily.
  • Cotton wool and felt. They usually go together and are an essential part of any filler. They cover the spring mechanism, which allows you not to feel it under you.

Choosing new furniture, be sure to pay attention to the material from which the frame part is made... Most often it includes wooden elements in combination with metal. The wood component can include both wood-based panels and plywood. It is very important that wooden boards are treated with paint and varnish coatings - this will protect the user from their toxic fumes. Expensive furniture models are made from wooden planks. But you need to make sure that the tree is well dried. Otherwise, the wooden frame will dry out and begin to creak.

Upholstery can be made of various materials (fabrics, leather or leatherette). Currently, leather trim is recognized as the best solution. This material is not only the highest quality and most durable, but also the most expensive. This is especially true for designer models. Depending on the model, the sofa can be upholstered in full leather or have leather inserts. The weak point of this material is the seams. Over time, they rub off, and the furniture loses its original beautiful appearance.

Among natural fabrics you can also find:

  • wool;
  • cotton;
  • linen;
  • silk.

Among the upholstery materials are also used:

  • flock;
  • microfiber;
  • tapestry;
  • chenille;
  • velours;
  • lamont.

Dimensions (edit)

Sizes of sofas and armchairs may vary. It is believed that today the most successful choice would be a 3-seater straight sofa. Its owners say that this size is enough to accommodate a small family, especially if guests are infrequent. The length of such a product is on average 1910 mm, and the width is 900 mm. A 2-seater sofa is much smaller than its 3-seater "comrade", and almost always means a purchase and armchairs. Its length usually does not exceed 1400 mm, and its width is 950 or 900 mm.Such models are well suited for small apartments.

Small and large corner sofas are presented in 3 different sizes - 2200x1750, 2700x1750, 2700x2200 mm. Such models consist of modules, each of them has a certain number of seats. There can be up to 3 of them.

The corner part can be made in the form of a small table or have an additional seat.

Folded sofas look no different from ordinary sofas. When unfolded, the number of berths depends on the seats. Double options have a berth no more than 2100x900 mm. If there are 3 seats on the sofa, then its unfolded size will be 1400x2100 mm. Much less often you can find sofas with a sleeping place of 1600x2100 mm. A bed of this size is most often found on corner sofas.

Chairs also vary in size. Average models are more common. For a very small room, it makes no sense to buy bulky and large armchairs - here it is better to put small or medium-sized models without huge armrests.

Colors and styles

Designers love to combine items by color. Anyone can use this technique if they wish. In order for different pieces of furniture to be harmoniously combined with each other, the colors of the ornament must match the colors of this item. These combinations may not be too flashy. It can be a colored drawing or an insert, but they must necessarily overlap with each other. So, by choosing plain blue chairs, you can successfully combine them with a gray sofa, on which there will be a blue pattern. This technique can work in the opposite direction.

It is important that there are no more than 3 colors in such a design, and the third should be combined with the decor in the room.... If you choose 3 elements of different colors, then it is worth considering the rule of their arrangement. One object can be bright, and the second should be a link between the rest. So, a blue sofa with a yellow ornament on it can be combined with a white armchair and a yellow armchair on which there will be blue pillows or a blue pattern.

The picking of bright and solid neutral colors is similar. Contrast combinations are more difficult to execute and color matching, but they look much more interesting. It is important to remember that there should be only one bright object in the whole room, the rest can be combined with it. Otherwise, the room may become overwhelmed and uncomfortable.

Such a setting can be muted with colors such as beige, gray, smoky blue. The combination of only neutral colors may seem the easiest, but this is a misconception. It is necessary to adhere to the contrast and neutrality of the tone, it can be the color of delicate fuchsia and peach, light emerald and purple.

It is not so easy to choose the right combination, and it will not be appropriate for every room.

Styles of upholstered furniture can be different.

  • Classic products more often made from natural wood. Carved parts may be present. Expensive natural materials of pastel shades are used for upholstery.
  • For a modern style, minimalism it makes sense to buy simple upholstered furniture. It should not have patterns, drawings, additional decor. The simpler the products are, the better.
  • In style high tech it is worth displaying sets of upholstered furniture made in approximately the same vein as in the case of minimalism. Laconic monochromatic models without unnecessary decorations will also look more here. The best finishing material is leather.
  • Upholstered furniture looks colorful and rich in the baroque style. These are expensive products made from rare wood species. Jewelry with gilding, silvering, bronze is possible. It is better to choose curved furniture that attracts a lot of attention.
  • For style provence it is worth choosing soft and cozy products made from natural materials.This applies to both the frame and the upholstery. Products of light, pastel colors will look better.

Let's say decor in the form of forged details or natural prints on the upholstery.

Placement options

A good sofa in combination with armchairs will always fit into the interior of the living room, but they need to be placed correctly. It is not advisable to place it too close to the window or with its back towards the entrance - it will not be psychologically comfortable. When choosing a place for a sofa, you need to focus on its model, which is selected for the parameters of a particular room.

Another way to determine the location of furniture in the guest room would be a drawing made on a piece of paper or on a computer that will help visualize future premises. Consider several classic options for the location of upholstered furniture in the guest room.

Symmetric

This is the most common way to arrange furniture in the living room and not only. It is also used for large residential areas. The whole point of this method is so that the double pieces of furniture are at an equal distance relative to some selected point. With this method of placement in front of a fireplace or TV, one sofa can be placed in the center, and 2 armchairs, floor lamps and other decorative elements on the sides. It is important that the right and left sides differ as little as possible. When entering a room with this method of furniture arrangement, the center point should immediately be determined by the eye.

Cabinet furniture should also be placed in a symmetrical manner. If there is a chest of drawers along one wall, then the same should be on the other wall. This type of furniture arrangement will appeal to very pedantic people who appreciate the accuracy and severity of lines.

Asymmetric

This method of placement does not imply furniture randomly scattered around the room. This is a type of arrangement in which the individual elements of the interior are arranged based on visual balance. This way of arranging furniture is typical for asymmetrical rooms. In this case the arrangement of products should be as convenient and functional as possible, without the use of paired items.

Such an interior should be as harmonious as possible, and the described way of arranging furniture is an equalizing factor between visually large and light objects.

Circular

This way of placing furniture focuses all attention on one single item in the center. This item could be a large chandelier or a table. This method can be implemented both in a simple living room and in any other living room. In this case, the arrangement of objects can be symmetrical or asymmetrical. If you want your headset to look harmonious with furniture of various shapes, then large and visually heavy objects should be placed around the central object close to it, and those that are lighter should be slightly removed to the walls.

This method is used if there is a need to equip the living room, combined with the dining area.

Examples in the interior

  • In a room where all the elements are made in light colors, the presence of some dark element is necessary, which by its presence will not create the effect of a “hospital”. A set of one sofa and two gray-blue armchairs can very well act as such an object. Located asynchronously, they visually delimit the room into 2 parts.
  • Voluminous 2-seater sofas and a white armchair will look gorgeous in a room where the walls are decorated in a pistachio or brown shade. The contrasting combination will be even more interesting if you complement it with a dark wood coffee table. An elegant carpet with contrasting patterns can be placed between the sofas.
  • If you are a fan of daring and bold color combinations, then you should pay attention for a combination of black and orange colors. For example, in a room with dark (almost black) wood trim, a sofa and orange-colored armchairs with high wooden legs will stand out brightly. The floor can also be finished with dark material, but it is better to place upholstered furniture on a light carpet or a separate insert made of milk-colored laminate (parquet).

In the next video you will find an overview of a sofa and an armchair in a classic style from the PinskDrev company.
