The most common way we watch others is to relieve boredom. We are bored, we are looking for any emotions (not necessarily positive).
Stumbling upon an unpleasant person in life is one thing, on the Internet is another. We scroll through the Instagram feed or an album with a photo on VK, experiencing negative emotions for which we will get nothing. You can log out of social networks at any time, in life this will not work.

Whether we like it or not, we always compare ourselves with someone. We are interested in how life is going with a neighbor or a former classmate.

To escape from problems

We often simply do not know how to solve our life problems, and therefore we switch to those who are also not sweet.
