According to fashion experts, fashion is always cyclical, and what was at the peak of popularity among our mothers often returns to modern catwalks. Sequins, which have long gone beyond jewelry for children's clothing and inexpensive evening dresses, were no exception. A top or a blouse decorated with these shiny scales can be worn even in the office, if you combine them correctly with a formal suit, the main thing is to choose high-quality materials and properly care for such a difficult wardrobe item.

Advantages and disadvantages

There are many varieties of sequins, which differ in a number of characteristics.

  • Colour. A huge palette will allow even the most fastidious customer to choose the perfect color scheme. There are also double-sided sequins that change color depending on their location on the fabric.
  • The size. There are sequins the size of small fish scales, and there are large plates with a diameter of 5 cm.
  • The form. Classic scales, of course, are round. But on sale you can find square, triangular, teardrop and many other shapes.
  • The foundation. You can buy such a decor both in the form of a scattering, and in the form of a canvas already ready for cutting. Sequins are sewn on jersey, tulle, chiffon and other fabrics.
  • Mounting method. Bright scales can be glued or sewn on. The second option is preferable, since the sewn-on elements last longer and do not fall off after washing.

Among the advantages of sequin fabric are:

  • brightness - with them, any outfit will be in the spotlight;
  • versatility - they can be sewn on almost any fabric;
  • they allow air to pass through well, in a T-shirt or dress with sequins it will not be too hot;
  • affordable price - unlike rhinestones or crystals, the price of even high-quality sequins is an order of magnitude lower.

As for the shortcomings, alas, they also exist:

  • it is not easy to work with them - not every novice tailor will be able to cut and sew such fabric;
  • they require special care;
  • products with hard scales are not always comfortable to wear.

In general, each of these problems can be solved. Tailoring is entrusted to a master in a good atelier, and washing is done by dry cleaning. It is better to choose dresses and blouses with sleeves so that the delicate skin of the forearms does not scratch on the sharp edges of the scales.

What clothes can you see the patch on?

You are most likely to find sequin applique or fabric fully embroidered with them in clothes for little girls. Young women of fashion love bright iridescent suits and shoes. Women's clothing is stricter than children's clothing, but one or two products with sequins can also be found in the wardrobe of adult women.

Sometimes it is a whole top, a festive dress or trousers, reminiscent of a scattering of shiny coins, and sometimes a very laconic decoration of the cuffs and collar of a blouse or a small line on the skirt along the side seam.

In addition to everyday and formal wear, swimwear, accessories and outerwear can be decorated with sequins. And you should not decorate underwear with hard scales, you can easily get abrasions and irritation on the delicate skin of intimate areas.

How to decorate clothes correctly?

There are many ways to sew sequins on fabric. This is a three-stitch fastening, and an open, continuous or chain stitch, and a "back to the needle" seam. Most often, such decorative elements are sewn by hand, but you can also use a modern sewing machine.

However, the main thing when creating shiny wardrobe items with your own hands is to follow a few simple rules.

  • In a correctly executed embroidery or pattern, the scales do not move or bend if you run your hand over them with slight pressure.
  • Fully adorned with shiny elements, the item looks cheap and provocative. When finishing, it is best to focus on one element or make a small drawing. It is best to wear strict clothes to the office or to study, diluting it with bright accessories with sequins.
  • To decorate outerwear, you should choose not shiny, but matte sequins. They look more appropriate and organic, and unexpected defects are not so noticeable in the absence of a bright overflow.
  • A shiny wardrobe item when worn should be surrounded by simple basic things in muted colors. So, bright gold trousers are best complemented with a simple gray T-shirt and a dusty green or light beige jacket, as well as simple shoes. From jewelry, you can limit yourself to earrings or a bracelet.

How to care for sequins?

In order for an outfit decorated with sequins to please its mistress as long as possible, it is necessary to follow a few simple rules for caring for it.

Neat sock

Thin scales made of plastic and metal look very elegant, but require a certain amount of care. Do not combine them with rough fabrics, especially with genuine leather products without lining. Untreated seams on these jackets and coats and their coarse zippers can damage the coating.

You will also have to try to avoid any snags, because sequins sewn with one thread can fall off the fabric. It will not be easy to restore such a product, and sometimes even impossible.

Neat storage

A dress or blouse adorned with shiny scales will have to be allocated a special place in the wardrobe. It is not worth keeping them folded: the elements on the folds quickly wear out and bend. It is necessary to hang clothes on separate hangers, placing them next to clothes made of delicate fabrics without large decor.

Do not hang two products with sequins next to each other, as they can cling to each other.

Washing

Those products, on the label of which the permission for dry cleaning is indicated, it is better to give it to professionals. The rest of the items will have to be washed by hand, as an automatic machine is capable of destroying a bright coating in just one wash.

Products must be turned inside out and soaked in warm water and liquid soap or conditioner. After an hour, you need to gently clean the visible dirt and rinse the clothes several times in cool water, then hang them without wringing so as not to damage the sequins.

If sequins are sewn on a blouse or T-shirt only in the form of a small applique or pattern, the product can be put into the washing machine in a special bag. The water temperature for such a wash should not exceed 30 degrees.

Ironing

A hot iron can melt plastic decor in just a couple of seconds, so you can iron things only from the wrong side and at low temperatures. And it is best to use a special garment steamer.

If you follow these simple rules, an outfit with sequins will retain its original appearance and shine for a long time.
