What is a drape coat and what does it look like?

From the French language, the word "drape" is translated as "cloth", but drape differs from cloth by a more complex way of weaving fibers. Initially, the drape was made exclusively from 100% wool, but now it can also be made from a mixture of woolen and synthetic threads, as well as completely from artificial fibers.

Drap is an ideal material for the production of outerwear. Products made from it have excellent thermal insulating properties, perfectly keep their shape and are able to give the figure a clear silhouette. A coat made of fabric containing at least 70% wool is especially appreciated.

Types of drape for coats

In the modern textile industry, pure wool is called a fabric with a share of synthetics of no more than 15%. Half-woolen fabric contains up to 70% viscose or synthetic fiber. The weave of thin fabric can be single-layer, thicker - one-and-a-half layer, and the most dense is the classic two-layer drape. Its front side is made of high quality wool and the back side is made of coarse yarn or synthetic fibers.

The most expensive and valuable top grade drape is obtained from a special double weave of selected pure wool fibers. The double-sided fabric is surprisingly durable, and it also has the same pile on both sides, so it can be repainted. One of the sides of the drape can be with a protruding or pressed pile, as well as laid diagonally or herringbone.

Models and styles

Classic styles are always popular and in demand. An impeccable straight cut of a drape coat, similar to a man's, is called a "diplomat". It is distinguished by a mid-calf length, a clear shoulder line, a medium-sized collar, and a laconic closure.

In the off-season, lightweight drape coats are popular; they are sewn without lining using fabric dyed on both sides. This material looks especially interesting on cropped or flared models.

Also, in spring and autumn, rectangular drape cardigan coats are quite relevant. This product can be worn instead of a cape or raincoat, it is appropriate in any situation.

The "military" style, performed in drape, also does not lose its popularity. A coat in this style is an imitation of an overcoat with shoulder straps and shiny buttons. The length is used up to the knees or "maxi", the fitted cut is flared at the bottom.

The woolen dufflock is back on the catwalks. This is a single-breasted, straight-cut, knee-length coat, stylized as an English sailor uniform. The classic length of a duffle coat is three quarters, a voluminous hood, patch pockets, hinged leather loops and "walrus fang" buttons are required.

A cocoon coat of an O-shaped silhouette with an arched shoulder line and a length just below the knee fits perfectly on tall, skinny ladies, it is cozy and sophisticated. A-line drape a-line coat is flared from the shoulder and does not interfere with movement at all. Oversized drape models are quite versatile, these coats of a free and voluminous silhouette with elongated or very wide sleeves look defiant and unusual.

A winter drape coat cannot be imagined without a voluminous fur collar or hood. A coat with a large fur collar looks luxurious. The fur of the fox, silver fox and arctic fox has been especially in demand lately. A shawl collar is also popular, a kind of symbiosis of a wide collar and a hood, which can be left on the shoulders like a scarf, or, if necessary, thrown over the head.

Combined

At the height of fashion are items of rather clothing that have inserts from a different material in their cut. The drape looks great in combination with fur, knitwear, raincoat fabric, natural or artificial leather and suede. Inserts can be used to replace both small details of a coat, such as pockets, cuffs, lapels, and, for example, sleeves or completely curly yokes. Also, only the hem or collar can be trimmed with textured material. Contrasting leather sleeves look especially impressive in combination with a drape coat.

Length

The length of the drape coat is very diverse - from floor-length models to an immodest mini. The length depends to a large extent on the style. The coat-diplomat is produced today not only in the classic version of the length (ankle-length), but also in a shortened form.

Military-style drape coats are both short and thigh-length. The length of a traditional duffle coat is one palm above the knee. Double-breasted coat shows knee length. Flared options can be found mainly at least below the knee. Stylists recommend medium-length woolen coats with voluminous fur collars.

Youth

Thanks to the efforts of modern designers, a women's drape coat is being transformed from a strict monochrome rectangle into quite original and attractive youthful images. Demi-season short coat options in bright colors will impress any girl. The cut of such models, as a rule, is straight or flared. Colors, in addition to the classic coat, are very diverse: powdery, lemon, turquoise, cyclamen ...

Young women will not be able to pass by the model of a coat with an O-shaped silhouette, and even with detachable sleeves. Modern youth is not indifferent to oversized style and transformable models.

Plus size coats for overweight

Women's drape coat for overweight is presented both in classic options and quite modern models. The "trapezoid" style looks great on any figure, including the full one. It is better to choose the length just below the knee.

Despite the fact that for a long time bulky things were recommended only for skinny girls, today the oversized style has become a classic for women of dense physique. Do not be afraid that a coat this loose will increase your size. On the contrary, in it you will seem like a fragile girl wrapped in a rough cocoon.

Poncho is another model loved by young ladies who do not have model proportions. The drape poncho will successfully hide the existing tummy.

Draped coats with a fur collar look great on full figures. Few women of fashion can resist the temptation to dress up in luxurious furs, which, moreover, if necessary, will successfully disguise the existing figure flaws.

Fashion trends

The main fashion rule of the current season is no rules. The woolen coat is universal, but below we will try to outline the main fashion trends of the current season.

One of the fashion trends of the current season can be called the return of vintage models, these are coats that copy the styles of the last century and are made in strict shades. In trend, tailored coats are sleeveless or with cropped three-quarter sleeves. Such models look good with high knitted or leather gloves. Stylized cuts are complemented by modern details such as buttons or buckles.

The original stylization of the "cocoon" style also came from the past. This oversized woolen coat with a shawl collar and a dropped shoulder line has a slightly tapered knee-length hem.

A woolen coat resembling a military uniform is another fashionable trend of the season. Modern designers are happy to soften purely masculine styles with feminine details - chains, beads and brooches.

As for fashionable prints, besides the neutral traditional diagonal pattern and the herringbone in color, the cage of various sizes is also quite popular.

Colour

In contrast to the pretentious runway models, designers still traditionally prefer a drape coat in a noble restrained color palette.

For everyday wear, smoky gray, gray-blue, dark blue, beige and chocolate tones, as well as anthracite shades of black, are perfect. Flared models of coats above the knee are good in any bright color - scarlet, hot pink, bugrundi, lemon yellow, light turquoise, emerald green or lilac purple.

For lovers of particularly impressive looks, the modern textile industry produces drape coats interspersed with gold or silver threads, creating a shine effect.

Manufacturers

The woolen coat is widely available in the market. The highest quality is, of course, a branded coat from a famous company. What famous manufacturers please us with their products?

  • The Italian coat has long been recognized as a model of exquisite taste. Such eminent design houses as the impeccable Trussardi, the spectacular Versace, the luxurious Valentino, the creative Roccobarocco and the bold Roberto Cavalli have a woolen coat in their collections.
  • Dino Chizari or Anna Verdi customers can afford woolen coats of Italian design and impeccable quality. The Irish brand Atmosphere offers its admirers bright options for a drape coat.
  • Among the Russian manufacturers of high-quality woolen coats, one can single out the garment factories Surskoe coat, Sinar and Forte Primo, the Trifo and Jsplash trademarks, the Mia Blanca, MiLtex and ElectraStyle brands, the designers Ekaterina Smolina and Evgenia Mastyaeva.

How to choose?

A woolen coat is bought for more than one month, and not even one season, so you should pay close attention to its choice.

  • Better to stay on a coat made of fabric, the percentage of wool in which is not less than 70. The composition of the fabric is indicated on the sewn-in tag.The quality of the product can be determined by the stitching, edging, axis of symmetry, fittings. There should be no protruding threads, uneven seams and skewed parts. If there is fur on the product, then it should be stitched, not glued.
  • When trying on, pay special attention to the sleeve, its ideal position is not lower than the middle of the palm. A woolen coat should not hinder movement or be too loose. If you want to look a little taller, choose a drape coat with a length slightly above the knee. For a snazzy, feminine hourglass silhouette, opt for a belted drape coat. V-neck is a good solution for broad-shouldered young ladies with a large bust. Those with small breasts will go for single-breasted woolen coats. A straight cut coat will help camouflage wide hips.

How to clean and wash?

Many people believe that cleaning a drape coat will work at home. But when caring for such things, you should be wary of bold experiments. It is best to take the product to a professional dry cleaner at least once a year. The maximum that can be done with slight contamination is to remove dust and adhering lint with a clothing brush or adhesive tape, and try to wipe off the stains with care with a mild soapy solution or ammonia.

But if your drape coat contains a small percentage of wool, and the tag contains information that the product can be washed in an automatic machine, then remember that for washing such things, the temperature is set to no higher than 40 degrees and special means are used.

After washing, the coat must be placed horizontally and straightened out. Dry a woolen coat should be outdoors or in a well-ventilated area. Wrinkles and creases, if necessary, are removed with a steamer.

What to wear with?

The classic-cut woolen coat goes well with many types of clothing. To create a casual look, you can choose accessories for the weather to match the coat, and wear black boots on your feet at low speed. Tights need to be matched to the tone of the shoe. Oversized drape coats are perfectly combined with skirts, dresses and high-heeled shoes.

A short coat will be in harmony with straight black trousers and high-heeled shoes, on a platform. The long version of the coat will be combined with almost any wardrobe items; you should refrain only from flared trousers. The bag should be chosen to match the headdress or scarf.
