When buying a frying pan or other utensils, you can see the marks on its surface. These, at first glance, incomprehensible hieroglyphs, denote how and for what this dish can be used. Read about the intricacies and meanings in the article.

Why are dishes labeled?

The markings on the cookware indicate how functional the cookware is. Think of your grandmothers. They, as a rule, did not have a lot of dishes. One or two pans made of cast iron, pots made of clay, and everything was cooked in one oven.

Modern kitchens are equipped with ovens, stoves, microwave ovens. Each model has its own temperature and cooking method. The dishes are also different - grill, non-stick, with induction support. All this requires a lot of attention when choosing. After all, ignorance can harm yourself and technology.

A non-stick coating, for example, requires special treatment. It cannot be scratched or cleaned with powders.

This is due to the fact that the damaged surface will release substances that can be harmful to health.

And for induction cookers, pots and pans are suitable that have a special alloy of material that forms a magnetic layer. Due to this magnetic layer, food is cooked.

When choosing dishes, the icons on the surface can be misleading. To avoid any trouble when preparing food, you need to know what and which icon stands for.

So, cookware markings can tell you which range the cookware is suitable for. Indeed, now there are so many varieties of stoves - glass ceramics, induction hobs, electric and gas stoves. And there are ten times more tableware materials.

Various metals and their alloys are used for the manufacture of pots.

Labeling is a guarantee of safety... If you choose low-quality dishes or use them for other purposes, you can get unpleasant consequences, for example, health problems. Also, an incorrectly selected saucepan or frying pan can cause irreparable damage to the stove and oven. It will not be easy to repair the equipment, and it will be financially expensive.

Cooking methods

The variety of stove types has led to the fact that not every frying pan or saucepan is suitable for use on it.

It is worth remembering that properly selected dishes are the key to tasty and healthy food.

Now it's worth figuring out what markers are, depending on the method of cooking.

  • Icon with a picture of the oven, with the inscription electric. This icon indicates that the cookware can be used in an electric oven. For example, such dishes are not suitable for an oven that runs on gas.
  • Marking with a picture of the oven. This icon is applied to dishes that can be used in any kind of oven. Accordingly, if this icon is crossed out, then use in the oven is not permitted.
  • Oven drawing with lights... This icon says you can cook in a gas oven.
  • Image of an oven with a number... Such an icon is used in the oven, but only up to a certain temperature. What temperature limit can be adhered to is indicated on the icon.
  • Flames are drawn in the square... These icons are shown on cookware that is suitable for gas stoves.
  • Marking with letters SHF or waves. The decoding of this icon says that the cookware is microwave-safe. If the icon is crossed out, then it cannot be used in a microwave oven.
  • A circle in the form of a spiral. This sign on the surface of pots and pans says it can be used on an electric stove.
  • A circle with a dot in the center. Sets with this marking are suitable for cooking on glass-ceramic hobs and hobs.
  • Four vertical loops and the word induction... And this designation indicates the possibility of using it on an induction hob. The principle of operation of induction is that surfaces during an electric discharge form a magnetic field. This field heats up and the cooking process is much faster.

These are the simple, but very important signs you might have on your dishes.

It is worth remembering that the choice of dishes in accordance with your stove will make your dishes delicious, and the cooking time will be significantly reduced.

Signs indicating operating rules

Cooking rules are important, but it is equally important to know how to care for your dishes. This will help preserve its original appearance and material quality. To do this, there are a number of markings that should also be studied.

  • Dishes are drawn in the square. This icon says that it can be washed in a dishwasher, because this unit has long settled in every second apartment. If the icon has a red diagonal stripe, then washing in the dishwasher is strictly prohibited.
  • A thermometer and a plate next to it are drawn in the square.... Such an icon can be indicated on glassware and it indicates that the material of the kit can withstand temperature extremes.
  • The presence of a snowflake... This symbol says that the dishes can be used in the refrigerator. And if there are three snowflakes, then even in the freezer. These utensils are good for freezing semi-finished and ready-to-eat foods.

These are the main markings that appear on pots and pans.

The presence of certain symbols depends on the material.

After all, not every metal dish can be used in a dishwasher. And not every plastic is suitable for freezing.

But the most important factor is the presence of the "glass-fork" icon, which says that the dishes are absolutely safe for food. Also, such a sign is often indicated on glassware and symbolizes the fragility of the material.

Many people take the “glass-fork” badge as permission to use the cookware in the microwave oven. However, it is not. For microwave ovens, a different marking is used.
