Currently, unfortunately, the problem of the occurrence of food allergic reactions in dogs of all ages is very urgent. This is most often due to the low quality of the raw materials used, as well as violations of the technology for preparing dry and wet feed in industrial production. But even when feeding dogs with homemade products, there are also many cases of allergic reactions, the cause of which lies in the intolerance of certain types of products to animals, which the owner does not know about.

To counteract food allergies and limit their effects on the health of dogs, pets should be properly fed with so-called hypoallergenic foods. Let's consider what kind of food they are, what is their feature, as well as the composition and action on the example of super-premium food for dogs.

Peculiarities

The use of hypoallergenic feed in the general sense implies the denial of any food allergic manifestations in animals.

In the production of such feeds, almost all possible causes leading to allergies are taken into account, and they are eliminated by a variety of methods.

For example, research has led to the discovery of foods that most often cause trouble for dogs of different ages and breeds. Here is a partial list of the main ones:

  1. meat: lamb, beef, chicken;
  2. eggs of geese, chickens and ducks;
  3. freshwater fish (rivers, ponds and lakes);
  4. milk and products from it;
  5. many types of cereals and their derivatives;
  6. corn;
  7. soy;
  8. vegetables: tomatoes, eggplants, cabbage, often potatoes.

As you can see from the above list, allergic dogs mainly suffer from protein foods, for example, meat, fish, eggs, that is, from the food that they need in the first place, as predators.

For good nutrition, dogs definitely need protein food, and meat in their diet should make up the majority - 60-70%.

Not all proteins lose their allergenic properties even during heat treatment, so some manufacturers of hypoallergenic feeds use non-allergenic meat in their products - horse meat, rabbit, turkey, as well as sea fish.

Other manufacturers use a more complex technology, decomposing animal protein by hydrolysis into small parts that are no longer dangerous for dogs. At the same time, the degraded protein remains the same complete nutrient for the dog's body as the whole one. This solves one part of the problem - Providing food for dogs with protein substances that do not contain allergens.

Another task is to supply food with safe carbohydrates, which are a source of energy for the body. They are usually cereals, potatoes and bread products.

But they can also cause allergies in animals in their original form (see the list above). If the animal has an intolerance to gluten contained in wheat, then choose another cereal, where this substance is not contained. And you can also replace cereals or potatoes with rice - it is not an allergen in most cases.

Hypoallergenic feeds are divided into the following classes: economy, premium, super premium and holistic. Super premium dry food is best used as a main dog food. For the production of such feed, only high quality meat and other products are used. Food should be chosen taking into account the age, breed characteristics and the pet's propensity to one or another allergenic factor., the manifestation of which should be excluded by product composition.

Composition

Super premium food is made for dogs of different breeds and ages, suffering from allergies.

As we have already found out earlier, their composition includes protein products, mainly meat and fish, from which there is practically no allergy, as well as carbohydrate plant ingredients that do not contain allergens.

Feed of this class includes the following possible products.

Protein ingredients

From meat:

  1. lamb;
  2. horsemeat;
  3. rabbit;
  4. duck;
  5. Turkey.

From fish:

  1. salmon;
  2. zander;
  3. tuna;
  4. Pike;
  5. herring.

Of course, most of the time, individual meat or fish ingredients are not mixed.

Dry food packages usually indicate which protein was used, such as "lamb" or "turkey and cranberries".

Sources of carbohydrates

Herbal Ingredients:

  1. brown rice;
  2. greens;
  3. medicinal herbs;
  4. some vegetables.

It should be noted that in super-premium feed only selected meat and other high quality ingredients are used.

They do not contain any harmful additives such as flavor enhancers, dyes, chemical preservatives and similar substances that can provoke allergic reactions in animals.

Sometimes, instead of cereals that carry energy, they use the so-called probable balance of vitamins, micro- and macroelements, as well as useful herbs.

But these are the main products. Such food cannot be considered complete if it is not balanced with vitamins, minerals and other substances useful and necessary for the dog's body. But they are calculated individually in each feed, depending on its purpose. Today, there are many lines of feeds of one or another brand, aimed not only at individual breeds, their developmental and performance characteristics, they are also divided by age and weight groups.

Let's consider how to choose the right super-premium hypoallergenic food for your pet.

How to choose food for your pet?

Before going to a pet store to purchase hypoallergenic food, you should first visit a veterinary clinic with your four-legged friend. There they will determine what specific substances the dog has a food allergy to, and along the way will give their recommendations on choosing a diet for it. And with this "baggage" of knowledge, it is already possible to begin the selection of dry food, suitable in its composition to the diet indicated by the veterinarian.

It should be borne in mind that all dry food of this class, although enriched with vitamins and microelements, but in some cases their amount does not reach the norm. You have to make supplements.

Both puppies and adult pets most often need to be provided with additional vitamins and microelements of certain types, determined by the purpose.

For example, vitamins A, C, D and E in their complex are aimed at improving vision, hair and teeth. For these purposes, of course, you will need calcium, phosphorus, copper and fiber. Therefore, when choosing a feed, you need to give your preference to products where the content of vitamins, micro- and macroelements is as close as possible to the norm for your pet. Your veterinarian will also have to give you the rules.

It remains only to carefully study the brands of super-premium food offered in the pet store (all information is contained either on the packaging or in the attached instructions) and select the best offer.

For puppies

Most super premium food brands have several lines under the same name, but among other things, designed specifically for the age of dogs, in general - for adults and puppies. They can differ within each main group both by years (for adults) and by months (for puppies). But these are the particulars that each owner can easily deal with.

It is important to select foods that match the diet prescribed by your veterinarian for allergy-prone dogs.

Here are the selection criteria, consisting of several main points.

  1. The food must be hypoallergenic.
  2. Age appropriate, in this case for puppies.
  3. Does not contain the main allergen that your puppy suffers from.
  4. The match is not only in age, but also in the activity of the pet.
  5. The composition of vitamins and minerals is close to the norms for the corresponding age of the puppy. To maintain good health of an allergic puppy, it is advisable to choose a food that contains prebiotics and vitamins of groups A, C, E, D. Such food will help get rid of allergy symptoms and increase the puppy's immunity.
  6. Preference, under equal other conditions, will need to be given to the feed, which includes special additives to improve metabolic processes in the body of a young pet.
  7. Feed availability. This does not mean the price, but the constant availability of feed on sale.

For adult dogs

When choosing food for an adult pet, you should be guided by criteria that are not much different from the criteria for choosing food for puppies. For adult dogs, even the point about preference for those foods that contain elements that improve metabolic processes in the body is relevant.

If you eat such food constantly, then a dog, regardless of breed and size, can live a rather long life and be at the same time quite healthy and active.

Only the item on prebiotics can be removed from the entire list., although, as mentioned earlier, in the feed of this class, the vitamin and mineral composition usually does not reach the full level. Means, supplements will not interfere.
