Perhaps not everyone knows about the existence of dogs with such an unusual name - Pomski. This rather expensive decorative breed is very popular among specialists and breeders, and is in great demand in European countries and the USA. In Russia, Pomski are just beginning to gain popularity among dog breeders.

History of appearance

Crossbreeding of dogs of various breeds has been widely and for a long time used in dog breeding. Its purpose is to create a hybrid with certain character traits, other working abilities, or with a characteristic exterior. The bred cross has the properties of both of its parents of different breeds, and sometimes representatives of several breedswhich were used for hybridization.

The Pomsky is a crossbreed breed resulting from the hybridization of the Pomeranian and Siberian Husky. Her goal was to create a miniature breed for domestic use as a companion dog.

As a result of long-term experiments, a unique dog of its kind appeared, inheriting only the best positive qualities from its parents. The new hybrid is called Pomski: the word is a result of combining abbreviations from "Pomeranian" and "Husky".

For the first time, information about a dog, which is a mixture of Pomeranian and Husky breeds, appeared on the Internet, where a user was interested in the character traits and probable diseases of this mestizo. On the Web, they instantly responded with heated debates about the real possibility of breeding such a breed, since the parents have such different dimensions.

The idea of creating an unusual breed, so actively discussed on the Web, prompted breeders to start experimenting. One of these experimenters was the famous American breeder Teresa Peterson, whose specialization is the husky dog. She bred her first hybrid litter in 2013. These first puppies were officially registered.

In the wake of Peterson, many other dog breeders have also bred these cute dogs. There were so many of them that it became expedient to establish an organization that would control the activities of breeders.

This body became in 2013 PCA - "American Pomski Club", which aims to maintain this breeding species at the necessary and worthy level and achieve recognition of this mestizo as an independent breed that has its own individual standard.

A peculiarity of breeding a cross between a husky and a Pomeranian is that the Siberian husky always acts as a mother. Miniature Pomeranians are simply unable to bear and safely give birth to such large cubs for them. Insemination is always carried out artificially.

Currently, the Pomsky is still not a breed recognized by the world canine societies. The breeding work of dog breeders is supported exclusively by the American Hybrid Dog Club (ACC) and PCA.

Description of the breed

Metis inherited from the Pomeranian its small size, and from the husky - the color of the coat and a kind of distinctive "mask" on the face. The color of the coat is diverse: pomsk are black and red, gray and white, brown, gray with a silvery sheen and a fawn shade. The color of the coat is not only solid, but also with tan or spots, and sometimes - marble.

The most common color for the breed is the typical Husky - gray-white.

Its coat is thick, fluffy, soft, of medium length. A thicker, shorter and warmer undercoat protects from cold and moisture, while the top coat is long and durable against dirt.

The color of the eyes that they inherited from the husky can also be different: blue and green, hazel and hazel. Quite often, there are cases when the iris of the eyes is colored in different ways: heterochromia is also common in the husky.

Pomsky's heterochromia can be in the following variants:

  • "Harlequin" - the eyes are colored differently, for example, one eye is blue and the other brown;
  • marble color - spots and blotches of a different shade are scattered against the background of the main color of the iris;
  • individual areas of the iris have different shades.

    The exterior of a dog can also be different and depends on which parent's genes are dominant. The variability of its appearance is also explained by the fact that purebred parents are used in hybridization. Given the wide variety of appearance, this breed was conditionally divided into several groups.

    • Fox view. Pomsky of this type have an elongated body (like a Siberian husky), a thin, like an orange, a skeleton, a pointed muzzle, protruding ears and smooth red hair with a reddish tint. In all its appearance it very much resembles a fox.
    • Plush type of pomski. Dogs have a small body, characteristic of a Spitz, a short blunt muzzle, soft, dense and longer hair, painted in typical husky shades, and a thick tail, twisted into a ring.
    • White pomski. This species is very rare, it is distinguished by its larger size, monochromatic coat of pure white color and refined outlines of the muzzle.
    • Brown mestizo with blue eyes, which is also a rare species. The dog has a dense, strong skeleton, a muzzle of medium length, not very long hair with a thick undercoat, colored in brown tones. The dog's nose is also brown.
    • Shorthaired look. It looks like a husky in miniature with a thick, but short coat.

    The weight category is also different. The size and weight of a dog is influenced by factors such as gender, size of parents, number of puppies in a litter and its generation. Usually, boys are 1-2 kg larger than girls and are about 5-10 centimeters taller than girls.

    Dogs of the first generation (F1), whose parents are purebred Spitz and Husky, can weigh from 4 to 12 kg. F1 puppies inherit parental physical characteristics in equal numbers and look 50% husky and 50% orange.

    An adult second-order mestizo is the result of crossing the F1. It can weigh from 4 to 10 kg. Predicting the color and size of second generation dogs is much easier.

    The expected weight of the Pomsky can be determined by halving the total weight of the two parents.

      The height of adult dogs is small and can range from 25 to 40 cm at the withers.

      Mestizos usually do not get their own diseases from their parents. They have the increased vitality and robust health of first-order hybrids. But this does not mean that they do not get sick at all. Diseases are most often the result of improper care and nutrition. In addition, they are prone to allergies.

      Character and behavior

      Taking their positive character traits from their parents, mestizos have a peaceful, affectionate, joyful and cheerful disposition. Their behavior is friendly, non-aggressive and calm. They show harmless curiosity to strangers, but at the same time they themselves are not afraid and are ready to rush at anyone in order to protect the owner.

      They are very mobile and active dogs that love to play, especially with children. They will never harm children, even through imprudence.

      They live amicably with other pets, even with cats, especially if they grew up together. The exception is rodents, which they perceive as a subject of hunting. They do not show concern if they are left alone, they can calmly be alone for several hours.

      Dogs do not require increased attention to themselves, being content with those manifestations of love and affection that the owner gives them. They feel good both with a lonely owner and with a large family.

      However, Pomski always chooses a favorite for himself, which will become a somewhat greater authority for him.

      Attachment to the owner is even greater than that of the husky, but the mestizo is more independent than the spitz: he does not need to constantly stay close to the owner. On a walk, he never initiates quarrels with other dogs.

      There are also negative manifestations of their disposition. During walks, a predisposition to escape may appear, when his curiosity may end either with a fun adventure or some kind of trouble. These dogs are great lovers of digging holes in flower beds and beds, and they can also make a complete mess at home from the things they spoiled and scattered everywhere.

      These pets can show in their character any features of the behavior of the Spitz and Husky, as well as acquire over time and their own in accordance with the surrounding reality.

      Care features

      Dogs of this domestic breed perfectly exist in the city, in any apartment, and in a private house, but they are not adapted to live on the street. In the apartment, the pet must have a personal place to sleep and rest. This can be any room where he is allocated a place with soft bedding.

      The dog does not require any special care.

      The main requirements for keeping a pet are regular walking, grooming, and periodic preventive visits to the veterinarian.

      It is recommended to visit the veterinary clinic according to the schedule: two visits a year are enough for a healthy dog. Metis are vaccinated in the same way as dogs of other breeds. They need their first vaccination at 6-8 weeks of age. Prevention against external and intestinal parasites is carried out every 3 months.

      A pet kept at home needs regular and long walks, during which it needs to dump stored energy. Activity in dogs is individual and corresponds to their size: the larger the dog, the more it needs physical activity.

      Each dog needs to be walked 2 times a day and loaded with physical activity, which only makes the pet feel better. The duration of the walk should be at least an hour. Running is especially useful for them, so it should take a lot of time on a walk.

      The unique ability of mestizo fur protects them from dirt and water, so dogs do not need to be bathed very often. It is recommended to bathe them 1-2 times a month using shampoos designed specifically for dogs. After bathing, wipe the pet thoroughly with a soft towel, and then dry the coat with a hairdryer.

      However, its thick coat needs regular brushing approximately 2-3 times every 7 days. During moulting, which happens twice a year (in spring and autumn), combing out should be done every day using a natural bristle brush.

      It is especially necessary to look after the fur near the muzzle and around the ears, since here most often the wool falls off, and woolen lumps are formed. Dogs do not need to trim their hair, only trimming between the toes is possible.

      Hygienic care of the eyes and ears of the animal is mandatory. Removal of impurities in the auricles is carried out using clean tampons moistened with a special lotion, which can be purchased at a veterinary pharmacy. You should also trim your nails as they grow back about once a month. Pet's teeth also need to be looked after: they need to be cleaned often (several times a week) with a special toothpaste.

      An interesting feature is inherent in dogs of this breed - they lick their fur, like cats.

      Feeding rules

      The nutrition of this breed is no different from that of other dogs. Since Pomski belong to the category of active dogs, the food should be complete, properly balanced, high-calorie. A natural type of food is recommended for these pets, but feeding with dry food is also possible.

      Natural food should include foods high in vitamins, microelements and have a medium calorie content. It does this by controlling the carbohydrate content. Natural food must be supplemented with mineral and vitamin complexes in order to provide the animal with a daily intake of vitamins and minerals.

      The main rule of feeding mestizo is to observe the required content and the correct ratio of nutrients: proteins, fats, carbohydrates, minerals and vitamins. A large proportion of the diet belongs to proteins, which are found in meat and fish. Meat products should make up 60% of the total daily diet.

      You can give your pet the following foods:

      • lean meat - veal, turkey, chicken, rabbit;
      • offal - tripe, heart, chicken liver, stomach;
      • sea fish;
      • cereals in the form of porridge - rice, oatmeal, buckwheat;
      • low-fat lactic acid products - natural yogurt, kefir, fermented baked milk, cottage cheese;
      • from vegetables, zucchini, beets and carrots, stewed cabbage, pumpkin are very useful;
      • fruits - bananas, apricots, apples and pears;
      • greens - dill, parsley and salad.

      Meat ingredients are usually given along with cereals or boiled vegetables. Boil porridge in water, you do not need to salt them. Only a very small amount of salt is acceptable.

      It is permissible to give an egg no more than twice a week. Fish is also rarely given - once a week. It should be noted that meat, offal and fish are given only boiled.

      Vegetable oils (sunflower, olive, corn) are useful to add to ready-made food.

      Pomski prohibited such products:

      • pork and lamb, any other raw meat and raw fish;
      • any fatty and spicy dishes and smoked meats;
      • confectionery, chocolate, baked goods;
      • spices and pickles;
      • potatoes and any beans.

      It is strictly forbidden to give tubular chicken bones to dogs. Sharp bone fragments can injure the stomach and intestines.

      Feeding adult pets is carried out twice a day: in the morning and in the evening.

      The advantage of dry prepared food is that it already contains all the necessary nutrients, vitamins and is properly balanced. There is also no need to count calories. For dogs of this breed, it is necessary to choose only super-premium food, since this is the highest quality food. It is strictly forbidden to use economy class food.

      It is also recommended to constantly feed the same brand of food. Frequent change of the brand of feed can lead to diseases of the digestive system. When eating dry food, fresh water should always be unlimited and available to the dog.

      Dry food can sometimes be supplemented with wet food - canned food, pâtés with different flavors.

      Education and training

      The Pomski are distinguished by highly developed intelligence, which they inherited from both of their parents. Mestizos are easy to train. They learn and execute many commands, understand their owner very well, love to be praised.

      But individual specimens are able to show the independence characteristic of a Siberian parent, which often leads to atypical solutions to the task and affects training.

      Only patience and a kind attitude can be achieved from a pet obedient and accurate execution of the command. A rude attitude can lead to the fact that he becomes nervous and uncommunicative.

      Metis has psychological sensitivity: he perfectly understands the emotional mood of the owner and easily adapts to it. He reacts negatively to a cry, and even more so to physical punishment and, despite his rather stable nervous system, becomes touchy and uncontrollable, and can show stubbornness.

        Since this is still a fairly young and rare breed, dog handlers cannot offer any specific and specific advice on raising and training. However, the method of non-intrusive involvement in the learning process with elements of play is always effective. It is quite possible for the pet to execute simple standard commands. Having mastered the command, he shows attentiveness and diligence.

        You need to start training and educating a dog from the age of 6 months. There are certain rules that must be followed.

        • You need to start learning with the simplest commands in a playful way according to the principle - from simple to more complex.
        • Consider the individual abilities of the pet - not all dogs are able to execute a command the first time. Failure requires persistence and repetition.
        • It is better to train at home after a walk: during this time the dog is in a good mood.
        • Successful execution of a command must be rewarded with a treat. Failure cannot be punished or scolded.
        • Commands need to be repeated constantly and non-intrusively in everyday life.
        • It is recommended that training be carried out between feedings, but not after them.

          The upbringing of the dog should also be accompanied by the fulfillment of the following requirements:

          • the pet should never be near during the meal of the owners, especially since you should not give him food from the table;
          • it is necessary to forbid him to sleep on the bed of his owners, not to allow him to sit in their chair;
          • the dog must clearly know its place in the apartment.

          Pomsky is quite capable of assimilating such standard commands as "To me" and "Place", "Next" and "Sit", "Lie down", "Give" and "Aport", which also prohibit "Fu", "No" and "You cannot ". During a walk, you can teach him to understand and perform "Walk", "Barrier", "Crawl".

          Training any dog, including the Pomsky, is a long and rather laborious process that requires a lot of patience and perseverance from the owner.

          For those wishing to have a puppy of this unusual breed at home, experts advise to first familiarize themselves with the characteristics and behavior of his parents - the Siberian Husky and the Pomeranian, since the pet can unpredictably inherit any positive or negative trait of their behavioral characteristics.
