The so-called sliding wardrobes play an important role in the interiors of modern apartments and houses. This particular piece of furniture is distinguished by its versatility and transforms the aesthetic picture of any room. The large capacity of wardrobes allows you to store seasonal clothes, accessories and other wardrobe items not just for one person, but for the whole family.

The ease of use of sliding wardrobes was appreciated by many owners, and they advise their relatives, friends, acquaintances to purchase similar designs.

Peculiarities

Before considering the distinctive characteristics of wardrobes, it is necessary to understand the general understanding of this piece of furniture.

A sliding wardrobe is an independent unit that can be installed in any room of a house or apartment, but it is preferable to place it in a bedroom. Due to the variety of the model range, everyone will be able to choose for themselves the original design and construction of the product. And if necessary, it will turn out to fit the copy you like to the required dimensions.

Today on sale there are two variants of sliding wardrobes, namely built-in and cabinet structures. Modern buyers prefer to purchase the built-in type of furniture. This design option fits perfectly into a dedicated niche or wall. An important feature of built-in wardrobes is in the absence of a frame, ceiling and side walls.

A wardrobe closet is a completely different matter. This furniture option is a free-standing structure that can be placed in any room in the house. A distinctive feature of wardrobes-sliding doors is the presence of an independent frame.

If necessary, a free-standing structure can become a divider of a large room into two independent zones.

Advantages and disadvantages

When choosing furniture for their own home, each person considers the advantages of a particular model and disadvantages. This rule applies not only to small products, but also to large-sized interior elements, especially wardrobes.

  • The undoubted advantage is the variety of color shades. Each person will be able to choose a wardrobe that matches the intended interior.
  • Possibility of selection of internal filling. And this is correct, because one person needs space for hangers, while another person prefers to use shelves.
  • Another important advantage of wardrobes is the versatility of designs. Inside there can be pull-out shelves, compartments for accessories, lockable, interior mirrors, additional hangers for belts, scarves and ties. Women are delighted with the multi-level retractable shoe cabinets.
  • The interior of the cabinet is very large and deep. Finding the right wardrobe item in a dark space takes a huge amount of time. Sliding wardrobes in this case allow you to mount lamps or lamps to create interior lighting.
  • The sliding configuration of the doors of wardrobes is a modern approach to the creation of furniture design. This allows you to significantly save free space, because you do not have to open large-sized doors, thereby blocking the passage.
  • Among other things, sliding wardrobes are the ideal way to hide wall imperfections, such as beams or columns.

Despite the many advantages, wardrobes have a small list of disadvantages.

  • One of the downsides is the limited track length due to the problem of rail movement. Although, in some structures, you can do the joining of two rails or create delimitations.
  • Another inconvenience is inadequate access to things. If a wardrobe is equipped with two doors, a person has only 50% free access to clothes. If the cabinet structure is made with three doors, then the accessibility to things does not exceed 30%.
  • Using the wardrobe as a room divider, it turns out to decorate only one half of the room. The back side will spoil the exterior styling.

Constructions

A sliding wardrobe is, first of all, a multifunctional piece of furniture, distinguished by its large size and spaciousness, which allows you to store clothes for several seasons of a large family.

Today, there are many types of wardrobes, so everyone can choose the perfect design for their own apartment. So, for example, the double-leaf version can be installed in rooms where there is a niche, various protrusions and planning elements that need to be hidden. Its two doors, moving with a roller system, are extremely convenient in operation, and most importantly, they do not occupy free territory.

Such wardrobes are also called compartment wardrobes, they are very convenient in apartments with a small square.

If the hostess approaches the issue of placing things correctly, she will be able to lay out and hang more wardrobe items in a two-leaf structure than in an ordinary wardrobe. In addition, each individual two-door model has an impressive range of internal elements, thanks to which you can correctly distribute hangers, shelves for clothes and a shoe niche.

If there is a desire, the double-wing wardrobe can be filled with newfangled products in the form of soft shelves.

Three-door designs are in greater demand, they have a lot of features. Firstly, such sliding wardrobes can be installed in any room, although they are more often placed in sleeping rooms and hallways. In small apartments, three-leaf products are placed in the living room and can serve as a divider for a large room into two parts.

It is worth noting that the three-door models of sliding wardrobes have long stepped over similar options for products with hinged structures, since the sliding models are more ergonomic and do not require additional free space required for opening.

In principle, a three-door wardrobe is considered a box with a unique inner filling.

In modern apartments, they often began to place pentagonal designs of sliding wardrobes. On the one hand, it may seem incomprehensible how such products look, but in fact there is nothing complicated. This is a standard corner wardrobe that does not take up much space and fits well into any interior, thanks to which it will be possible to use the free space for personal interests.

The design of corner cabinets can be cabinet or built-in, while built-in models are most often made to order, taking into account the characteristics of the room. And hull structures are purchased according to the available dimensions.

The only drawback that embedded pentagonal cabinets, is the inability to transfer it to another room, since the product was created according to the size of the allocated space. In this case, case models are much more convenient, since they can be transferred from point to point and even transported. It is important to note that corner structures are not just roomy, but also functional.

When ordering a product in the workshop, you can design a pentagonal structure with a TV niche.

Dimensions (edit)

Going to a furniture store, you can get acquainted with ready-made options for sliding wardrobes with certain dimensions. It remains only to choose the most suitable copy for your apartment or house.

Special attention should be paid to wardrobes, which are made to order. The carpentry shop or workshop must be provided with suitable dimensions, indicating the height, width and depth of the structure.

It is important to remember that the optimum depth of wardrobes is 60 cm... This distance is quite enough for free placement of hangers with clothes, and there will also be free space for the sliding doors. If you choose a depth of 40 cm or 50 cm, you will need to use an end hanger or a retractable hanger design. The only drawback will be the visually narrow typeface.

If the room allows, the depth of the cabinet can be ordered within 70 cm. At the same time, the cabinet will not visually appear large.

As for the width of the doors, the best option is a distance of 1 meter. Large dimensions are extremely inconvenient during operation, and due to the bulky dimensions, the door movement system breaks down very quickly.

The height of the cabinet is chosen relative to the ceiling, but in most cases it is about 3 meters. At the same time, it does not matter how small or enlarged the frame is, the main thing is that the structure is ideally placed in the place designated for it. In any case, on a visual level, the product seems long and wide.

The width of the cabinet itself has no definite boundaries.... It can be 3 meters, maybe 5 meters - it all depends on the wall or the niche planned for the product. Custom-made designs for the living room are in most cases the width of the entire wall.

The reliable design of wardrobes requires a small distance from the wall to the frame, at least 50 mm, thus avoiding damage to the wall covering and the furniture itself.

Materials (edit)

Today there is a huge variety of materials from which cabinet and built-in furniture is made, the same applies to sliding-door wardrobes.

Wood

It is this type of material that is valued above all, since exclusively natural gifts are used in the manufacture of the structure. The cost of wooden products is much higher, and, unfortunately, not everyone can afford them. To fix this problem, manufacturers managed to find some trick and instead of natural boards, they offer customers cabinets made of furniture boards. We are talking about glued boards covered with veneer.

People who are versed in materials can make it even easier and order a cabinet from a similar MDF or chipboard.

Chipboard

The abbreviation stands for laminated particle board. Today it is the most accessible type of material and the most budgetary. Its quality exceeds all expectations. Quite often, the inner frame of cabinets is made from laminated chipboard boards, since nothing is visible behind the front part. But in general, chipboard looks good as a front side.

The main thing is that the plates themselves are of good quality, otherwise an unpleasant smell of chemistry will be felt, which is very difficult to weather.

MDF

MDF boards are similar in characteristics to laminated chipboard material, although they are considered environmentally friendly and safe. And their appearance is more presentable, thanks to which they are used in the design of the front part.

Tempered glass

In principle, an inexpensive and at the same time very unusual material that allows you to make the facades of sliding wardrobes in the original style. The price of the material depends on the quality and complexity of its processing. It is one thing to create a matte surface with a sandblaster, and quite another to prepare a glossy finish.

Design and functionality

Before purchasing a wardrobe, you need to decide on the most suitable option for the internal content of the structure. The same product, depending on the location, will have significant differences in content. For example, a bedroom wardrobe contains everyday wardrobe items, accessories and household textiles.

The closet located in the hallway area provides for the placement of street clothes, shoes and constantly used accessories, for example, hats, scarves, gloves and much more.

In classic models for bedrooms, the wardrobe is divided into three parts. Its bottom shelf is reserved for shoes, and its design approach is able to double the capacity of a shoe niche.

The middle part has a spacious size, for this reason there are hangers for clothes, shelves for linen. The mezzanine, located at the very top, is designed to store out-of-season wardrobe, as well as towels, bed linen and similar textile items.

The multifunctionality of wardrobes assumes all kinds of additional protrusions and sliding mechanisms. For example, if a woman has a special passion for scarves or men for ties, there must be a pull-out shelf with additional magnification, which allows you to place a large number of these wardrobe items. But the most important thing is the presence of a large mirror on the doors of the product, thanks to which each family member will be able to appreciate their full-length image.

Unusual and original versions of wardrobes are installed in living rooms. Their spaciousness and internal content allow you to neatly arrange things and objects that are not intended for public viewing.

Color spectrum

The color palette of wardrobes is wide variety.Variations in shades offered by manufacturers depend on the material used in the manufacture. So, for example, plastic surfaces or MDF can be painted in any color. but most consumers opt for wardrobes presented in natural wood shades.

It can be light or dark beech, oak looks very rich, maple and wenge colors are considered noble and are mainly chosen by connoisseurs of interior austerity.

It should be noted that the colors of wenge and maple have a variety of palettes, ranging from beige to brown shades of different saturation. Thanks to this variety, everyone will be able to choose a wardrobe that matches perfectly with other interior items.

Looks luxurious compartment product made in white or any of its shades. The category of white cabinets includes vanilla tones, milky tones and even ivory.

Lovers of modern apartment furnishings prefer sliding wardrobes, the shade of which is similar to the color scheme of the overall interior... For example, a bulky product may appear in salmon, pale green, light yellow or sky blue. Among other things, sliding-door wardrobes can have combinations of contrasting shades, for example, black and red, yellow and blue.

For modern owners it is important to have a mirror in the cabinet design, which is mounted in the base of sliding doors. Only a regular mirror finish cannot represent a full-fledged furniture design. Manufacturers offer options where a pattern is applied to the mirror surface with sandblasting that can emphasize the style of the interior.

Style solutions

To date, a wide variety of sliding wardrobes is presented on the market, each of which has a clear relationship to stylistic directions.

    Modern

This style assumes the use of a minimalistic design of structures, where straight lines and a small number of shades are pronounced. For example, it can be a square wardrobe design, where slabs with wood grain and matte white tones are lined up in a checkerboard pattern.

In addition to the square design, the Art Nouveau style is characterized by rectangular extensions, well-arranged among themselves. There may be a small gap between them, complemented by frosted glass.

The snow-white design of the wardrobe, which fits perfectly into the modern style, will look very laconic.

        Classic

A wardrobe made in the style of the Victorian era can ideally emphasize the classic interior design. For example, snow-white columns decorated with gold inserts look extremely impressive and rich. Sliding doors made of full-size mirrors enhance the effect of beauty and high cost.

          Provence

Interior designers equate this style with rustic beauty, as it is distinguished by a sufficient number of white shades and worn elements. Quite often, Provence-style wardrobes are decorated with decorative grilles. The legs are mostly carved. On the one hand, it may seem that all these inserts make the cabinet visually rough, but in fact, the Provence style speaks of softness and lightness.

Along with the usual Provence, there is a lesser known neo-provence style. It is a mixed subspecies of minimalism and hi-tech. A striking example will be a snow-white wardrobe made of modern material, the facade of which is diluted with flower drawings.

          Scandinavian style

Quite often, designers compare a Scandinavian solution with a hospital setting or a European-standard renovation in the early 90s, but not with the interior of richly decorated rooms of expensive hotels. During its inception, this style required the use of exclusively natural colors of the palette, namely natural wood or shades of gray.

The design of Scandinavian wardrobes is presented in a rude manner, which makes the structure feel massive and simple. In order to correctly emphasize the style of the interior, it is advisable to order or purchase a wardrobe with a solid wood or veneer facade.

          Modern

This stylistic option is chosen quite often when decorating bedrooms and living rooms. It is based on a classic design, complemented by minimalism, simplicity and versatility of color shades. This applies not only to the facade itself, but also to the internal elements. The modern style involves the use of any materials, even metal elements are allowed.

However, wood is rarely used in a modern stylistic solution.

The described style involves the creation of sliding wardrobes not only for the bedroom, but also for the hallway, and especially for the living room, where a TV is placed in a specially cut niche. Side attachments can be of different shapes, ranging from the "snake" design, and ending with abstraction. As for color solutions, modern style assumes any variation in shades.

          Selection recommendations

In order to avoid mistakes and choose the right wardrobe, there are several important rules to follow.

          • It is advisable to pay attention to the most spacious structures corresponding to the size of the room and money savings. It should be remembered that the number of wardrobe items is increasing every month, therefore, several spare shelves must be present in the closet.
          • It is very important to check the operation of the door opening mechanism. Modern manufacturers offer several options for sliding systems. The first is a metal frame along which the doors roll with the help of rollers. But this option is not very reliable, since it is possible for small particles of dirt to enter, which slow down the roller, and with a strong jerk, the door can simply pop out. It is best to consider the monorail option. Of course, such cabinets are somewhat more expensive, but it is the monorail sliding system that is considered more reliable.

It looks like this: a special lock is installed on the door, which prevents it from sliding off the dedicated rail.

          • Rollers for the door travel system can be metal or plastic. Plastic itself is not a durable material and wears out very quickly. Accordingly, the most suitable option would be a metal walker.
          • Before buying, you should familiarize yourself with the material from which the different models of sliding wardrobes are made. So, for example, a product with guides made of aluminum will cost a little more, but its design is short-lived, unlike its counterparts.
          • Sliding panels should not be more than 1 meter wide. First, wide doors are very difficult to open. Secondly, due to regular use, the travel movement fittings quickly fail.
          • In the classic design of wardrobes, mirrors are used that can visually increase the dimensions of the room, create a lighter and more spacious environment. Although in some cases it is preferable to decorate the mirror surface with a matte pattern or pattern, the decision depends on the design of the room and the individual preferences of the owner.
          • In the modern interior, a special design of furniture is used, where the facade is decorated with elements of photo printing.

          Where to put?

A sliding wardrobe is considered a versatile piece of furniture that can be installed in any room. First of all, you should consider the entrance group, namely the hallway. In this case, it is preferable to install a built-in wardrobe as a wardrobe part, due to which it will be possible to reduce the used area.Shoes, jackets, outdoor accessories, as well as cosmetics for the care of various types of fabrics and materials will be very conveniently placed inside the cabinet.

The second option for placing wardrobes is a living room where a large family spends their leisure time. Each individual model is distinguished by a varied design of external and internal equipment. Living room products do not have to be completely enclosed, and thanks to their individual designs, they can even accommodate a TV.

Additional add-on niches allow you to install room decorations such as vases or photo frames.

And yet the best place to install wardrobes is the bedroom. Women will appreciate the opportunity to rummage through their wardrobe, find suitable clothing options and choose the most interesting image, and mirrored doors will allow you to carefully examine the appearance. At the bottom of the sleeping wardrobes there is a drawer unit for placing shoes in boxes and on special stands.

A prerequisite for the internal space of compartment structures is the presence of shelves on which you can lay out a lot of things, as well as textile household items. The upper part of wardrobes can be used as storage for seasonal clothes.

          Beautiful examples

Having familiarized ourselves with the options and ideas for the execution of wardrobes, we will consider stylish examples of products, corresponding to various design solutions.

          • Quite an interesting combination of shades and straight lines of the Art Nouveau style. Fashionable design and special approach visually reduce the dimensions of the structure. Contrasting colors and vertical lines increase the height of the product, which has a positive effect on the visible effect of the dimensions of the room.
          • A classic wardrobe in all its forms. Unusual shapes, special inserts, carved patterns, old-style columns, edging of a mirror surface with an interesting pattern. All these subtleties emphasize the luxury and richness of the product. This wardrobe fits perfectly into the interior of light and cream bedrooms.
          • Charming Provence model. The design of the product is filled with crisscrossing lines that are reminiscent of rustic decorations. Minimal decor, no protruding decorations, small mirror insert give the product a sense of lightness.
          • This example of a Scandinavian-style cabinet shows a similarity to a hospital setting. Cool tones, minimalism of the design solution hide a rich interior space with many shelves and compartments.
          • The modern style of wardrobes is distinguished by its special design and unusual construction. The front side attracts enthusiastic glances, although this is the usual volumetric cubism. It is important to note the perfect combination of a shade of gray with wood canvases, which visually increase the height of the structure.
