Classics and originality, modernity and distant past, gloom and romance. All this characterizes the Gothic style of clothing - one of the relatively young, but deeply rooted fashion trends.

Gothic style of clothing: medieval motives in a new way

To understand the modern fashion trend, you need to travel back several centuries in the past and get to know the stylish "ancestors".

The general concept of "Gothic" appeared in the Renaissance and meant a trend in the art of European countries at the end of the 11th - 13th centuries. The Gothic movement, which replaced the Romanesque style, affected architecture, sculpture and, of course, fashion, which was distinguished by:

  • dark majesty;
  • bewitching coldness;
  • beautiful severity.

And it literally permeated everything around. People of art and art critics of the Renaissance called this period and everything related to it "barbaric".

Like much that is associated with art and fashion, the Gothic style originated in France, and reached its peak in the historical region of this country - Burgundy.

The "barbaric" fashion of the Middle Ages had several options - each class had its own tendencies and preferences. They were united by their attraction to elongated proportions and silhouettes. The trend was shoes with long toes (sometimes up to half a meter), pointed hats, a thin waist that was tightly pulled together by lacing, teeth at the edges of clothes and long trains. The higher the position of the lady was, the longer the train was. The fashionable trend was the drapery in the abdomen.

The upper outfits were represented by semicircular or round cloaks, fastened on the chest with a massive buckle.

The color palette was dominated by bright shades and all kinds of ornaments.

After some time, other styles came to replace the Gothic. It seemed that she outlived her and went down in history. But several centuries later, at the turn of the 18th-19th centuries, it was revived for a short time, having absorbed new rules and trends.

The next round of popularity of the "well forgotten old" has already occurred in recent history.

Features of modern Gothic

Modern Gothic in clothes, with the help of which Goths (fans of the subculture of the same name) express themselves, is significantly different from what was in fashion almost a dozen centuries ago. The modern Gothic style was born, or rather - revived in a modernized form in the 70s of the last century. In addition to the features of medieval fashion, elements of punk direction and modern trends are intertwined in it.

The main distinguishing features of the "barbarian" trend in modern clothing are:

  • Gravitation towards black and its cold combination with white or red. Minimal use of saturated shades of purple, burgundy, green and blue is also allowed.
  • The presence of clear silhouettes and straight lines.
  • Extravagance.
  • Slim top and loose bottom designed to make the figure angular and hide the feminine shape.
  • The use of white (light) ornaments of a specific theme. The favorite metal is ready - silver, which symbolizes the Moon and emphasizes the deathly pallor of its owners.
  • Sharp angles that can show up in collars, cuffs, hemlines, or even prints on garments.
  • The use of textured fabrics and materials with an interesting texture.

From his medieval ancestor, he inherited gloom and severity.

Diversity

Currently, the Gothic style is divided into several directions, which, of course, do not depend on the social status of its fans. Rather, it is a matter of taste and preference.

  1. Antique (romantic), using the fashion trends of the 18th century and characterized by the presence of lace, gloves to the elbows, maxi dresses, corsets and veils.
  2. Vampiric, which is a kind of imitation of "cinematic" vampires. Girls who adhere to this direction diligently emphasize their sexuality, use bright red details in their outfits or makeup (lipstick, nail polish).
  3. Metallized (rock). It echoes "metal" in music and uses leather items, complemented by all kinds of chains, collars, spikes. Latex clothing is also allowed here.
  4. Cyber direction. Skillfully combines elements of Gothic with industrial. When creating images, preference is given to artificial fabrics, acid shades, shoes on a high platform.
  5. Lolita (J-Goth). Destination originally from Japan. Its main attributes are gothic knee-length dresses, richly decorated with frills and crinoline. Umbrellas, hats, shoes with rounded toes on a high platform are used as accessories.
  6. Corporate. A kind of "adaptation" of the subculture and its fashion to the requirements of the dress code. It is characterized by minimal use of accessories and virtually no makeup.

Apart from these options, in modern Gothic can be distinguished;

  • Victorian and Renaissance Goths, embodying images of the past;
  • androgynous, trying to "disguise" their true gender behind clothes and cosmetics;
  • glitter and faerie goths, which include exclusively girls who dye their hair in uncharacteristic bright colors, braid dreadlocks and pigtails.
  • Western Goths, reminiscent of cowboy movies.

Representatives of the latter group are the smallest and rarer than others.

Modern set of gothic things

As already noted, black things prevail in the wardrobe of the ready. But the assortment of image elements itself is quite wide.

For outfits, silk, velvet, vinyl, mesh leather, denim are used, complemented by organza, brocade, taffeta, lurex.

Women's wardrobe consists of:

  • leather trousers, tight-fitting silhouette;
  • T-shirts, turtlenecks, dark blouses;
  • skirts and raincoats of medium and maximum length;
  • leather corsets that are worn on top of dresses or shirts;
  • vintage or ultra-modern dresses with complex styles;
  • harnesses - like corsets, they are worn over clothing;

The image is complemented by all kinds of lace, frill, lacing, rough boots on a high platform or heel, unusual umbrellas, long gloves, hats with veils, large massive jewelry made of white metal (silver is mainly used, but “exceptions” from white gold or platinum are allowed).

Favorite ready-made accessories are:

  • jewelry decorated with thorns, chains, handcuffs;
  • bracelets and collars made of latex or leather;
  • images of skulls, spiders, cats, dragons;
  • rings, earrings and pendants with images of Egyptian crosses.

Instead of bags, girls can use oversized backpacks or elegant travel bags.

An integral and important part of the image is the hairstyle. In Goths, this is usually straight raven hair (rarely red or ashy). The romantic direction allows curls and lush hairstyles.

Adherents of the Gothic style have a peculiar make-up. The "aristocratic" pallor of the face is very popular, so a significant layer of makeup is applied to it. The most expressive detail is the eyes, drawn with black eyeliner or pencil. The color of the manicure is also black.

Who is it for?

Despite its extravagance, modern Gothic is quite versatile. The original image will do:

  • for an unconventional wedding;
  • girls looking for self-expression;
  • to organize an unusual photo session;
  • for a party;
  • for lovers of black, a little bored of the monotony;
  • those who want radical changes in appearance.

How to create a trendy bow

For those who wish to dress according to the canons of the subculture, designers advise to start with black trousers, which can be denim or leather.

If the figure allows (slender forms), it is worth giving preference to skinny. Otherwise, it can be loose-fitting trousers.

The next purchase is a corset that will perfectly match both trousers and a fluffy skirt with lace trim.

A "pirate" shirt with bare shoulders is recommended under the corset.

The romantic image is ready

For rock fans, in turn, T-shirts with various symbols corresponding to the direction are suitable; pants; leather boots with massive solid soles or high heels in black or red; leather bracelets and latex collar.

To not only look like a goth, but also become one, you need a special worldview and a suitable environment.
