Modern irons have a number of additional functions, one of which is the ability to use steam for better and easier ironing. The equipment into which water is supposed to be poured must withstand such a load and correctly distribute the liquid inside, directing it into the steam compartment. If something goes wrong, water begins to flow out of the iron for no reason, causing discomfort, and sometimes damaging the clothes, especially if its color is brown. To quickly understand the causes of problems, you need to know more about what can happen to the iron, where to look for the problem and how to solve it.

Iron with a steam generator: principle of operation

Modern technology differs from its predecessors in that it has more mobile dimensions, more functions and allows you to get the job done faster and easier. The iron can also be attributed to those devices that have changed not only their appearance, but have also undergone improvements. At the moment, in addition to the ability to choose the heating strength of the sole for different types of fabric, there are devices that turn off themselves if they stand idle for a while. This innovation helps to prevent a fire due to the turned on iron, which they forgot to disconnect from the power supply when leaving the apartment.

Another important function was the steam generator, which we managed to add to the device. Thanks to the steam that goes directly onto the material during ironing, the fabric is smoothed faster and much less effort is needed to make the surface even, even if it is very dry.Despite all the apparent complexity, the device of the steam generator is quite simple: it is a reservoir for liquid, from which water enters the valve device, through which it goes to the sole of the iron.

The convenience of this technique is that steam can be turned on and off as needed.

In the case of proper operation of the iron, moisture enters the surface in a moderate and necessary amount, and thanks to the well-heated sole, it evaporates almost instantly, having time to moisten the surface of the material so that it can be easily ironed. In the event of any malfunctions, the result may be different.

  • Instead of the required amount of water, which has time to evaporate, from a few drops to a small puddle is poured onto the clothes, which can negatively affect the fabric, leaving a stain on it, and cause an accident, since the presence of water during the operation of the electrical appliance is highly undesirable.
  • A correctly set iron can only steam things if it has a certain soleplate temperature. With low heating, humidification should not be turned on, since the device simply will not be able to dry the material, which means it will remain wet, which can cause damage to it or even the formation of mold and odor. If you can turn on the steamer on the iron at low power and it will work as usual, these are the first signs that the equipment is faulty.
  • If you use ordinary tap water for the iron, then over time, salts will accumulate in it, which, in the end, will cause stains on clothes that may not be washed off.

In case of any problems with the steam generator, you need to stop the ironing process, turn off the iron and try to find the cause of the problem.

Reasons for water leakage

If the iron is in an upright position and the water that has been collected there for the ironing process flows or flows out of it, it is worth taking this seriously, because the consequences of ignoring it can be very serious. In the event of cracks in the water compartment or problems with its internal structure, never continue using the appliance. If water flows from the iron in a horizontal position, this is also a problem and you need to know why it can happen.

  • The easiest option is just a breakdown of the equipment in the iron itself, which the master can fix, and if possible, it is worth taking the device for a replacement, if the warranty allows.
  • The problem is in the valves that let water from the tank to the sole. If the shut-off device does not protect the equipment from unplanned fluid leakage, then it is worth checking its operation. You can do this at home, for which you need to close the valve and turn on the iron to a mode that excludes steam, while tilting the equipment in different directions. If water drops appear, this proves that the shut-off device does not block access to water and the valve needs to be replaced. Such work should be entrusted to professionals, and if possible - go to the service center to receive a full range of services.
  • Steam is released until the soleplate reaches the required temperature. To steam things, it is necessary to set the temperature regime to such a position that will enable the device to quickly cope with the moisture that has formed on the surface and dry it instantly. If an unheated iron starts to release steam, it means that something is wrong with it. It is also not necessary to turn on the steaming mode on your own until the device is completely heated, this can cause subsequent breakdown.
  • The use of unsuitable water clogs the valves and water hardly passes to the exit point and can do this with different voltages and flow rates, which will affect the material in the form of wet spots in some places.If such water is used for a long time, then when ironing, instead of steam, a yellow liquid is poured out, which spoils both the device and things. Rusty water can appear due to improper use of the iron, disregard of the rules and regulations given by the manufacturer. If rust appears during steaming, you should immediately seek help, otherwise the iron may break soon.

There are not so many reasons that can cause any deviations from the norm in the operation of the equipment itself and its individual functions, therefore, in any suspicious situations, it is worth interrupting the ironing process and make sure that the device is working normally and correctly.

How to troubleshoot problems

If a brown liquid flows out of the iron, then this is a serious signal that something needs to be done. In the event of an unpleasant situation for the first time, you can try to figure it out yourself, for which there are a number of options:

  • using the self-cleaning function;
  • the use of citric acid;
  • using a pencil to clean the soleplate of the iron.

If the iron is equipped with a self-cleaning function, it is worth using it in the event of a problem. The procedure is simple and includes pouring water into the reservoir for it up to the maximum mark and setting the temperature of the iron to maximum heating, without turning on the steamer. To continue working, you need to hold the iron over a sink or other container and turn on the self-cleaning mode. For a more efficient process, you need to hold down the button and shake the equipment well several times in order to clean the equipment as much as possible, after which you can see how rusty water flows out of the iron.

When the procedure is over, you need to turn off the iron and let it cool down, then rinse the water container to remove the remaining dirt from it. The problem with using this method is that not every technique has this function, which means that an alternative way to deal with the problem is needed. When rust stains occur, the problem is usually looked for in scale, which can be removed with citric acid.

For cleaning, it is worth buying a regular sachet of citric acid, dissolving it in a glass of warm water and pouring everything into the water tank in the iron, then warm up the equipment to the maximum temperature, disconnect it from the electricity and turn on the steam. In order for the cleaning to take place more actively and the scale is removed from all walls, you need to tilt the iron to the sides, shake it in order to capture the largest possible area for the best result.

In case of serious pollution, one cleaning is not enough, therefore it can be done several more times.

In the case of normal use of the iron, sometimes unpleasant situations can arise when you iron with or without steam. The simplest problem of poor water supply or time-consuming ironing is a dirty iron soleplate, which is damaged by fabrics, if the wrong temperature regime is set. There are some materials that cannot be ironed at all, because they simply stick to the surface of the device. If this happens, residual dirt may block the steam vents, and foreign matter on the sole makes it difficult to iron quickly and easily.

A special pencil for cleaning the surface of the iron will help to cope with this situation. It is easy to use, you just need to warm up the sole and run the pencil over the dirty areas. It is worth placing something under the iron while you work, as the leftover pencil will drain directly onto the ironing board, leaving stains on it. After cleaning, you need to wipe the surface; when it cools down, turn on the steam and clean the holes several times with the hottest water.

Preventive actions

In order to prevent malfunction of the iron itself, disruption of its operation, it is important to observe certain precautions and use the device correctly.After purchasing the equipment, it is worth spending a little time studying the instructions, because each manufacturer indicates specific recommendations for the use of equipment, which may differ.

There are just a few rules to help you avoid problems with the iron:

  • use the steam supply mode only when necessary, so as not to unnecessarily wear out the mechanisms and equipment inside;
  • use only purified water for filling inside the equipment, which will significantly slow down the process of depositing scale on the inner walls of the device;
  • if water remains after ironing, it must be poured out so that it does not create a sediment, which also clogs the equipment.

With proper operation and timely checking of the iron for faults, the ironing procedure will bring only pleasant emotions, and things will delight you with an ideal appearance.
