Plastic has long been widely used as a finishing material in rooms that differ in their functional purpose. Often, tiles and porcelain stoneware are placed on walls or floors, but such materials are not suitable for the ceiling.

The ideal solution is PVC plastic panels, especially for the bathroom, where condensation constantly collects. We will tell you how to make the ceiling in this room out of them in the article.

Pros and cons of the material

The bathroom has its own distinctive features from other rooms. The humidity level is increased in it. Due to this circumstance, materials for finishing works on a ceiling base must be reliable and able to withstand such an environment.

Ceilings are often decorated with PVC panels. Ceiling plastic is a material that has a number of pros and cons.

Positive points.

  1. Plastic panels, which are fixed to the ceiling in the bathroom, are not afraid of the effects of water, they do not deteriorate, do not deform.
  2. The material is endowed with high strength.
  3. With fluctuations in air temperature, it has a high level of plasticity, allowing it to compensate for changes in its own dimensions.
  4. It is not affected by acids, alkalis, alcohols, which may be contained in room cleaning products. Has a damage-resistant surface layer.
  5. Plastic is able to embody any design ideas, since it is famous for its colors of various styles.
  6. The material is easy to install, it can be installed by one person.
  7. Repair of a plastic surface is carried out with a minimum of financial investment.If one panel needs to be replaced, then it will not be necessary to remove all the ceiling elements.
  8. The service life of the plastic panel ceiling is very long.
  9. The material prevents the development of mold or mildew in the bathroom.

The panel ceiling in the bathroom also has some drawbacks.

  1. To install it, you will need to assemble the frame, which, in turn, will reduce the height of the ceiling in the room.
  2. These ceiling panels are stacked strictly in a certain order, observing geometric proportions. The joints of the plastic connection will always be visible, so it will be very difficult to call this design ideal.
  3. When choosing colored panels, you can purchase material from different batches. As a result, the ceiling will have an uneven tone. Unfortunately, such a difference can be seen only when a certain area of the ceiling base is covered with plastic.
  4. Condensation accumulates in the bathroom from the steam, so the ceiling panels should be cleaned whenever possible or the room should be regularly ventilated.
  5. Plastic is a highly flammable material. It cannot be mounted close to lighting or other heating devices.
  6. PVC panels are quite fragile and can easily be damaged by impact.

Varieties of panels

Currently, the industry produces plastic panels that differ in size range, color and design solutions.

The most popular option is panels 2.5-3 meters long, 15-37 cm wide and up to 10 mm thick. Their front side can be white, colored or patterned.

Plastic ceiling covering has the following varieties:

  • lining;
  • seamless plastic and PVC lath panels;
  • acrylic plastic intended for ceiling bases.

The cheapest plastic ceiling material is lining. It is a bulky plastic reinforced with longitudinal stiffeners. They look like cavities that are hermetically sealed together. Typically, the thickness of such plastic ranges from 0.5 to 10 mm.

In appearance, the panels are similar to the wooden tongue-and-groove boards, which are usually used for sheathing carriages. This material is made by adding softening additives to it to obtain a uniform color. If the surface of the panel needs to be given a peculiar pattern and rich color, then thermal printing is used.

When selecting plastic panels without seams you should take into account the specifics of the locking connection of the elements. This plastic is a commonly used material in bathrooms. The width of the PVC panel is small (250 mm) and large (400 mm) with a maximum thickness of 1 cm.

Such PVC panels have a glossy or matte finish. The variety of their colors allows you to make the ceiling base smooth or voluminous in appearance.

Panels rack are a material that imitates a metal profile and resembles expensive aluminum structures. In fact, their price is quite reasonable. Panels differ durability and high resistance to humid environments. Today, there are panels on sale that reach 2.5-4 m in length and 10-30 cm in width.

Their color palette includes a wide variety of shades. The surface of the plastic panel can be glossy, matte, mirrored. Considered especially fashionable mirror panels PVC. With the skillful placement of lighting fixtures in the bathroom, you can create a unique, zero-gravity-like space.

High quality slatted panels are necessarily covered with a protective film. This fact should be considered when buying.

The panels have a long (up to 20 years) service life. Recently, they are very popular acrylic ceiling panels. Their installation is carried out in the form of a suspended structure. In the space behind such a ceiling, ventilation and air exhaust systems are most often placed.This is a kind of plexiglass that does not deform under the influence of moisture. Plastic acrylic panels do not harm human health. They are easy to handle. This material is bent, drilled, cut without much difficulty.

The negative aspect of installing acrylic panels on the ceiling in the bathroom is their high price. Only wealthy people can afford to make such a ceiling.

Colors and designs

A wide range of design ideas, the texture of the material, as well as the ability to realize the most unusual dream with its help, allowed plastic to quickly gain great popularity.

Today, for the bathroom, you can pick up slatted or sheet panels of any length and width. It all depends on the size of the room, the height of the ceiling, the color of the walls and floor, as well as the number of pieces of furniture in the bathroom and their tone.

Modern ceilings in this room are distinguished by a variety of shapes and colors. The most popular is the ceiling. in beige or white colors. He might be delicate blue or juicy orange. Red plastic ceiling will make your bathroom bright and positive.

Gray tone due to its shades, it will add sophistication to the ceiling, bordering on restraint and nobility. Turquoise or aqua will bring a feeling of delight, closeness to the caressing sea and beach in the bathroom furnishings. Purple or delicate lilac shade will endow the ceiling with tenderness, mystery, special sophistication.

Bright saturated colors should be in harmony with the overall interior of the bathroom and the objects in it. Due to the wide choice of plastic panels for the ceiling, today it is possible to create any design. It can be a simple matte ceiling or a multi-level structure with a glossy finish, complemented by acrylic inserts.

In small bathrooms with low ceilings, experts recommend installing a ceiling from narrow panels. Wide panels will organically fit into a large room with a high ceiling.

Stylish and modern are matte panels. They imitate natural materials well and resemble wallpaper. It is on them that drawings of various beauty and design are applied.

Glossy plastic can be used to decorate the ceiling in small bathrooms, since the shine of the surfaces will visually expand the room.

An expensive version of plastic material is presented in the form of panels with drawings in 3D format. This is a modern approach to ceiling decoration. It allows you to create a three-dimensional image in a room and divide the space into specific zones.

Drawings are different in subject matter and form. A marine theme is often used with images of fish and animals of the underwater world, as well as its flora.

How to choose?

Each buyer decides for himself what shape and color the ceiling panels should be in the bathroom of his apartment or house.

The main condition, as mentioned above, should be acquisition of one-party plastic... If you buy the material of the right size, and the colors of the individual planks differ even slightly, then all the work on installation and preparation for it will seem useless, followed by disappointment.

Differences in the tone of the plastic are very clearly visible on the ceiling, since it is additionally illuminated by light bulbs.

In order to choose the right plastic material for finishing the ceiling in the bathroom, it is better to immediately pay attention to a number of details.

  1. There should be no displacement of the picture on the panels. All planks must clearly fit with each other.
  2. Pay attention to the number of stiffeners. If there are many jumpers, then the panel itself will be strong.
  3. The panels must be connected to each other without any gaps. If there are any, then this means that the locks are made with marriage. On the ceiling, such a flaw looks like a step and immediately spoils the overall picture.
  4. If the plastic has irregularities that are clearly visible during inspection, then you do not need to purchase such panels. This material can hardly be called quality.
  5. Try to check with a tape measure that the actual dimensions correspond to those indicated on the manufacturer's packaging. There are times when they do not match, and when finishing the ceiling there is simply not enough material.
  6. When purchasing plastic panels of impressive length, pay special attention to how they are delivered to their destination. Often, panels are transported in a bent state, not suspecting that in this way they immediately spoil the material. If the panel is bent, then an irreversible process occurs in the stiffeners - their deformation. When such a panel is mounted on the ceiling, the clarity of the lock connection does not arise, thereby creating gaps between the panels.
  7. After you have selected the material, do not forget to purchase additional connectors for it. As a rule, this is the starting strip. It clearly fixes the panel, helps to adjoin it to any surface.

Installation features

In order to beautifully and correctly mount the ceiling in the bathroom, you must first make the calculations, then purchase the required amount of material and auxiliary elements, prepare the ceiling, and also stock up on the tool with which you will do the work.

Before you start finishing the ceiling with plastic in the bathroom, you need to prepare its surface. First, they make a sketch of the future frame, and also accurately determine the locations of the lamps and ventilation holes.

Before heading to the store for materials, you need to have a clear idea of the number of plastic panels, their color or pattern.... You have to imagine a scheme for laying plastic on the ceiling. In the same way, the number of aluminum profiles for the frame is selected, and their length is taken into account.

You will need those tools that are in almost every home, or buying them will not take much time.

You will need:

  • tape measure and building level;
  • pencil, edger knife, liquid nails;
  • screwdriver, drill (puncher);
  • crowns for the installation of lamps and a hacksaw for PVC processing.

After preparation, the installation itself is carried out.

  1. First, determine the distance from the ceiling base to the frame to be mounted. It should be at least 5 cm. Choose the seam closest to the ceiling (if any) and mark it with a pencil in steps of 35-50 cm. Thus, the places of the lower edge of the future ceiling are fixed. This must be done around the entire perimeter of the room.
  2. Carry out the installation of the main guides. To do this, take aluminum profiles and fix them with self-tapping screws at the points previously marked with a pencil on the walls. On the rough ceiling, the profiles are fixed with hangers.
  3. A plastic skirting board is connected to the profile. Self-tapping screws or liquid nails are used for work. Subsequently, plastic panels are inserted into this skirting board one by one. It looks like the letter "P". One side of it is slightly shorter than the opposite side. The starter plinth or profile defines the direction of the entire ceiling pattern or panel color. This material also covers the panel ends.
  4. After the assembly of the frame, the laying is carried out. The panels are pre-cut to size, holes are cut out for the lamps using a crown or a knife.
  5. The first panel is inserted into the starting plinth. After installing it, all the plastic is stacked in the same way. Each new ceiling panel must be installed in the groove of the previous material. If you follow the sequence and carry out the work carefully, then all the plastic strips will clearly and accurately adhere to one another.
  6. Before installing the panels, the wiring for the lamps, which must be built into them, must be prepared.In the process of installing panels with holes cut out for the lamps, wires should be threaded through them, with the help of which the lighting devices will be connected to the general electrical network in the house.
  7. No starter profile is needed to lay the last panel. Most often, such a bar is cut along its entire length, and after that it is placed against the farthest wall. To install the panel, measurements are taken. They look at how many centimeters are left between the very last of the laid panels and the wall of the room, take into account the width of the plinth. The panel is cut in such a way that it is adjacent to the penultimate rail and the wall. First, a ceiling plinth is attached to it, and then it is pushed into the groove to the penultimate element. The plinth itself is fixed to the ceiling with a sealant or liquid nails. This completes the installation of the ceiling with PVC panels.

Successful examples

There are a lot of ideas for decorating the ceiling in the bathroom with plastic, especially when it comes to slatted material.

Slats for gold, silver or chrome in combination with other colors are in great demand.

Installation of a slatted ceiling is carried out in two ways. In the first case, gaps remain between the rails, and in the second, all the plastic is attached end-to-end. Very often, strips of various colors are connected, alternating with each other. Beige tones are best combined with light brown shades, and, for example, gray panels look good against a background of cream-colored plastic.

If you have a small bathroom, then plastic in light colors will make it more spacious, because it is able to reflect the surface.

Those wishing to focus on certain pieces of furniture that are in harmony with the ceiling are advised to correctly position the lighting.

In order to hide the connecting seams between the panels as much as possible, you can lay the plastic along the lighting fixtures. In this case, the impression of the integrity of the entire ceiling covering in the bathroom will be visually created.
