Bicycles are one of the most popular types of transport. Cycling develops and strengthens muscles and helps in developing a child's sense of balance. How to choose the right model for your child, because the market offers a huge number of a wide variety of models?

Today we will talk about bicycles with 16-inch wheels, tell you what age they are designed for, and how to choose the best option.

Age restrictions

Cycling with wheels with a diameter of 16 inches targeted at children aged 4 to 7 years. The height of a small cyclist should be ranging from 110 to 116 cm - this will allow the child to confidently hold on to the saddle, not to slouch too much and not to overexert himself. You should not purchase models designed for older children - it will be difficult for your baby to maintain balance if the steering wheel and pedals are at an inconvenient distance for him, therefore, the risk of falling and injury increases sharply.

Of course, if your kid has already gone to school, but has not yet stretched out to 115-116 cm, nothing prevents you from buying him a 16-inch model, because after all, age restrictions are largely conditional.

How to choose?

When choosing a bike model for your child, pay attention to these criteria.

  • Tire material. They should be made of solid rubber, not plastic.
  • The material of the main structure (frame and other parts). Aluminum models are preferred. Of course, in terms of strength, they are inferior to steel, but their weight is much less, and this is important for children's hands.
  • Product weight. It depends on the material from which the base is made (see the previous paragraph) and the number of various additional accessories, such as bells, headlights, reflectors, etc. The child should, without much straining, lift his vehicle from the ground and roll it.
  • Brake system. Usually, children's bicycles are equipped with mechanical pedal brakes.
  • Chain protection. On many models, the bicycle chain is protected by a special metal guard - to avoid trapping chain links and clothing parts (legs, laces, raincoat edges, etc.) and subsequent injury to the child. The casing also protects the chain from unnecessary clogging, because when riding in open areas of the bike, traces of road dirt and dust, water drops and other debris will always remain, which deteriorates the quality of the lubrication and thereby can cause a slowdown or even a stupor of the chain.
  • Optional accessories - fenders, reflective elements, headlights, etc. Their presence is an additional plus of any model.
  • Product design. Currently, many manufacturers design their models for the characters of various cartoons, so first ask your child about his preferences and tastes.
  • Don't forget about protective equipment. Knee pads, elbow pads, and a helmet will help your little one avoid serious injury in the event of a fall from the bike.
  • And of course the price... Similar models from different manufacturers often differ greatly in cost. And if there is a cheaper product available, which in other characteristics is in no way inferior to an expensive analogue, why pay more?

Having looked at the model according to these criteria, before making the final decision on the purchase, take the child to the store for a "fitting". The length of the bike model's frame should be equal to the distance from the elbow to the fingertips of the baby's hand - for comfortable control of the vehicle... Check the height of the frame - it should be 8-10 cm below the crotch of the standing child.

Place your toddler in the saddle and see if he can reach the pedal in the down position with his straight legs. Let him spin the pedals, and you will watch - whether the knees are lifted too high at the same time.

Check saddle and handlebar height adjustment. In modern models, a convenient mechanism is implemented that allows you to choose the optimal height and angle of inclination.
