If your room has low ceilings, then you need to select a lighting device differently than in ordinary rooms. This is largely due to the peculiarities of the distribution of light, as well as the need to visually stretch the room vertically. Do not forget about convenience - it is unlikely that you will be pleased to bend over every time passing under the chandelier.

Peculiarities

A stylish beautiful chandelier is undoubtedly the dream of many. However, low ceilings significantly narrow the choice. When installing the lighting system, proceed with extreme caution, because if you do not know some of the design rules, the room can be made gloomy, depressing and down-to-earth.

Experienced designers provide some simple guidelines.

  • Elongated suspensions are not suitable in this case, the closer the panel with lamps is to the ceiling, the better, only then the light will fully illuminate the living room. To enhance the desired effect, opt for stretch fabrics and reflective paints.
  • Buy a chandelier that will be fixed directly to the ceiling, this way you will achieve space savings.
  • If possible, combine different light sources in the hall - it is advisable to supplement the central chandelier with wall sconces; alternatively, you can install lighting around the entire perimeter of the plasterboard box. In combination with the main luminaire, such a solution will be quite effective. If you wish, you can make a parallel highlighting on the floor - this technique will allow you to stretch the length.
  • Give preference to spotlights evenly distributed throughout the room - this option is not only additional, but often basic, while the abundance of small lamps can easily replace a chandelier.
  • Refuse models with shades of dark colors, preference should be given to equipment that can transmit light in all directions.

Suitable options

Let's dwell in more detail on various options for chandeliers, which can be used to decorate a room with low ceilings.

  • On the bar... These products may differ in the number and direction of the boom and the length of the center console. This design ensures the brightness of the illumination. It is advisable to choose chandeliers whose shades are directed up, down and to the sides.
  • Cascade chandeliers... Products are allowed in halls with low ceilings only if the length of the hanging parts is small, there are many light elements in the structure, and the panel itself is wide. The models are compact, therefore they do not overload the space.
  • Crystal. These are luxurious and opulent chandeliers that invariably give the hall an expensive look. This option is optimal for living rooms decorated in baroque, rococo or classic style. It is desirable that there are as many bulbs as possible - then the reflected light will create a beneficial lighting effect in the room.

However, try to get a similar model that does not hang too far from the ceiling.

  • Carob chandeliers... Such designs can be used when the suspended part is low and the shades are located as close to the ceiling as possible. When buying a chandelier, it is worth stopping at models that scatter light with high quality, optimally open.
  • LED Models in high-tech style interiors, they can have the most intricate configurations, they take up very little space, but at the same time they become a real decoration of the room.
  • A win-win option would be flat ceiling lights, which are located almost near the ceiling. As a rule, they look like a large light element made of a translucent material, underneath there are from 2 to 8 bulbs. The only drawback of such lamps is the simplicity of the design, so this solution is suitable only for ultra-modern styles (minimalism or hi-tech).

Styles

Depending on the style of the living room with low ceilings, chandeliers can be made in different designs.

  • Classics - preference should be given to compact spider-type chandeliers or products with small shades in the form of flower buds.
  • High tech - this style assumes laconic and primitive versions of chandeliers that harmoniously complement the modern style of the room. Strict geometric lines do not clutter up the interior and do not conceal the height of the hall.
  • Modern - this direction involves the use of exquisite artistic techniques that combine grace and gloss. Most often, floral and floristic motives prevail here. Such equipment will make the living room more fresh and original.
  • Fusion - chandeliers of unconventional shapes are used here, in most cases they look unusual, for example, as a cluster of crystals, a starfish or glowing diodes.
  • Ecostyle - in this style, handicrafts are usually made from wood, threads and other natural materials. Such plafonds are inexpensive and unique. Hand-made chandeliers attract attention and harmoniously emphasize the simplicity and brevity of the decoration of the room.
  • Provence - such a finish involves the installation of small lighting products with floral motifs. Compact models with flower and bud-shaped decorations are ideal here - they can become the center of a "country house".

Lighting types

When organizing a lighting system in living rooms with low ceilings, not only the choice of the chandelier model, but also the type of lamps is of no small importance.

Incandescent lamps, despite the emergence of more advanced technologies, they remain the sales leaders. This is not surprising, given the undoubted advantages of such models:

  • the lowest price among all analogues - this factor makes the model so popular;
  • ease of replacement - if the lamp burns out, you just need to unscrew it by inserting a new one in its place;
  • wide range of - on sale you can find lamps with a power of 15 to 300 W, models of different configurations with different types of cartridges.

There are also a lot of cons:

  • uneven light distribution - this is especially noticeable in halls with low ceilings;
  • reduced efficiency - at the maximum level of power consumption, such lamps have minimum lighting parameters;
  • short service life - light sources burn out quickly, especially with voltage drops, as well as with frequent switching on and off the light;
  • excessive overheating - during operation, the bulb overheats rather quickly, if the lamp is near the ceiling, this situation is fraught with fire hazardous situations, so try to maintain a distance of at least 10 cm.

Halogen lamps is a more modern version. The advantages of such products include:

  • high luminous efficiency - in this parameter, halogen lamps are twice as high as incandescent lamps;
  • the working resource surpasses incandescent lamps in its parameters;
  • halogen models come in different sizes, including miniature ones that can be inserted into a small sconce;
  • light pleasant to human eyes;
  • affordable price.

At the same time, such lamps are designed for only one cartridge size. In addition, during installation, it is forbidden to touch such lamps with your hands, this causes an instant burnout of the light source, therefore all work can be carried out exclusively with special gloves, and if you nevertheless touch the lamp, immediately wipe it with alcohol.

Fluorescent lamps - this option is optimal for low ceilings. The lamps do not almost heat up, and they do not carry any danger to the ceiling surfaces. Among the advantages of a fluorescent lamp are:

  • maintaining a comfortable atmosphere in the living room - fluorescent models give a bright diffused light, which is especially important when it comes to living rooms with low ceilings;
  • the standard shape of the sockets allows you to put fluorescent lighting fixtures in place of the usual incandescent lamps;
  • long period of operation;
  • low temperature - even with prolonged operation, the lamps heat up to no more than 45-50 degrees.

Keep in mind, when working with such lamps, care must be taken, since there are elements hazardous to health inside. If such products fail, they are subject to mandatory disposal. This is far from the only difficulty that awaits users when using such lamps. The fact is that when the voltage in the network drops by more than 10%, the lamp simply does not light up at the moment it is turned on. Besides, the light becomes dimmer as it is used, and sometimes noise and audible interference are generated during use.

Otherwise, this type of product can be used in rooms with low fluxes as an alternative to standard incandescent lamps.

Popular in recent years LED lighting devices:

  • the working resource is 10-100 thousand hours, which is many times higher than all analogues;
  • LED is a lamp with minimum power consumption;
  • lamps work in any temperature range.

However, there are also disadvantages:

  • like any quality product, such lamps have many low-quality counterfeits on the market;
  • products are of high cost;
  • When buying lamps of an unusual shape, serious problems can arise with the purchase of replacement.

In general, this option can be called the most successful for living rooms with low ceilings.
