Uvarovite is a rare bright green garnet subspecies, which was discovered in 1832 at the Saranovskoye Ural deposit. The chemist G. Hess, who described the mineral, named it uvarovite in honor of Sergei Uvarov, president of the Imperial Academy of Sciences. The advantages of the mineral were highly appreciated by the Empress Catherine herself (the godmother of S. Uvarov). The gem is also called the imperial mineral, the Ural emerald, chrome garnet, trautvinite and hanleite.

Uvarovite has not been subjected to taxonomic analysis, that is, the mineral has not been classified, since the color shades of the mineral are highly dependent on the places of its discovery:

  • thus, minerals of bright green shades (Ural emeralds) are extracted from the deposits of the Urals;
  • dark gray-green minerals are mined in the Scottish deposits (Glen-Skiag) and are called glenskiagite;
  • brown-green stones mined in India (Hanle) are called Hanleites.

The degree of transparency of the mineral, as well as its color, is varied. Both minerals of pure water and translucent ones containing various inclusions were found.

Jewelry craft is the only area where the mineral has found its use. The craftsmen liked it because of the incredible natural beauty of the crystals. A feature of the mineral is that it is not processed to create jewelry, but is used in its original form. Cutting gem crystals is a daunting task.

Nature itself has presented this wonderful mineral to man in a ready-made, exclusive form.Therefore, the mineral is present in jewelry in the form of geological aggregates, which are unique crystalline complexes (brushes). In other words, any such decoration is unique and seems to breathe untouched nature.

The cost of uvarovite jewelry varies greatly. In combination with silver, the products are sold at affordable prices. But excellent work in combination with gold will cost significantly more. For example, a relatively modest silver pendant with a Ural emerald is estimated at 14-18 thousand rubles, a similar pendant made of gold with a mineral can cost 100-110 thousand rubles.

The unique and direct natural beauty of the mineral leads to constant interest in it on the part of collectors. Some of them have the rarest stones of the most unique beauty and structure.

Place of Birth

It is necessary to search for the mineral in rocks rich in manganese and iron. There are few deposits corresponding to the growth conditions of uvarovite crystals in nature.

  • Saranovskiy (South Ural) uvarovites are traditionally considered the best and are more expensive. Large specimens suitable for faceting are sometimes found here.
  • The grayish skiagites from the deposits of Scotland are practically in no way inferior to them.
  • Small deposits of the mineral have been found in the USA, Canada, South Africa, Turkey, Norway. Uvarovite is mined in the fields of Italy, India, Finland, Poland. Sometimes the gem is found in the mountains of the Himalayas and Pyrenees.

Properties

Uvarovite is a primordially Russian, noble-looking stone that resembles an emerald. This similarity is provided by the chromium contained in the mineral. When crushed, the mineral turns into a white powder. Ural emerald has a glossy shine, characteristic of glass. A special difference from garnets is that the mineral does not melt under high temperature exposure and does not come into contact with acids.

Chemical and physical

The potassium contained in uvarovite can be attributed to one of the pomegranate subspecies. The mineral also contains chromium, and the presence of titanium in it gives the mineral a reddish hue. The iron content of the mineral gives the stone deep shades of emerald. According to its chemical composition, uvarovit is considered a complex chromium and calcium silicate.

In the sun, the mineral shimmers fancifully. It is often used in scientific optical experiments to study the conditions of refraction of light rays. Some specimens are so pure that they are like a transparent drop of water. Others, with a denser structure, are somewhat unclear, which does not affect the beauty of the stone, but gives it a significant share of exclusivity.

The mineral is small in size - from two to five millimeters, often small stones are soldered into medium-sized aggregates. Some specimens of the mineral are up to 10 mm in size. The largest crystal, 15 mm long, was found in Finland. Crystals of the mineral are usually transparent and give off the luster of glass. The mineral has a hardness (Mohs scale) of 6.5-7.5 and a specific gravity of 3.8 g / cm3.

The color spectrum of the gem is characterized by spectra of green and deep green shades, occasionally with some yellow component. The main feature of the mineral is that it is extremely rare in a crystalline form suitable for cutting and polishing. Therefore, masters use it as a whole, as natural druses and brushes.

  • perfectly clean, absolutely transparent crystals with a uniform color are usually fake, since the natural conditions for crystal growth cannot be perfect;
  • the hardness of the mineral is higher than that of glass, therefore a real mineral leaves traces (scratches) on the glass surface;
  • Ural emerald brushes usually include stones no more than 23 millimeters in size, and larger stones are a sign of possible falsification.

By its thermal conductivity, a real gem can be distinguished from most fakes. The Ural emerald will remain cool in human hands, fakes made of glass or plastic will heat up.
