Many lovers of original manicure are haunted by the question of why the moon manicure is called this way and not otherwise. In fact, everything is obvious - the lower edge of the nail plate near the cuticle is called the lunula, and when varnish is applied to it, there is a feeling of a crescent moon playing with different colors. This is a pretty stylish but extremely sophisticated type of manicure.

The history of manicure

The history of lunar nail polish has a long history - it was first introduced back in the 1920s and throughout the pre-war years remained at the peak of popularity with Hollywood stars.

There are several main versions of the appearance of such a nail design. The first is connected with the fact that it was at that time that women achieved equality with men and began to work in the same way as they did. If in previous years in office and public institutions the fairer sex could work exclusively with gloves, then for girls engaged in manual labor, this attribute significantly hampered the performance of work duties. This led to the fact that they began to abandon the use of gloves everywhere. This led to a powerful revolution in the production of varnishes and enamels for decorative manicure, which became available to most women.

At the same time, the ladies of high society considered dirty hands as bad manners, they tried to combine in their manicure both cleanliness of hands, the presence of varnish and, at the same time, exceptional elegance. So the idea arose to cover the nails with varnish not completely, but partially leaving the edge near the base of the nails.

The second version indicates that women were afraid to paint their nails entirely, believing that this would not allow them to "breathe", since it was believed that the plates covered with varnish did not grow well. This led to the creation of lunar manicure during that difficult period.

The advantages of lunar coating

The advantage of a moon manicure is that the nails look elegant, such a coating will look harmonious in the office, but it can effectively complement an evening outfit. At the same time, it does not matter how long the nails are - the lunar coating looks great on both long and filed nail plates.

Lunar manicure is often called an inverted jacket. - since in terms of technique it is as close as possible to French.

Some fashionistas complement the look with rhinestones and beads, others experiment with color and even combine a reverse and a classic jacket.

Classic manicure

In the classic version, the lunar manicure assumes two options, in which in one case the hole near the base of the nail remains unpainted, and in the second, on the contrary, only the lunula is painted.

It's easy to make - just three simple strokes with a manicure brush are made for this. One - along the central part of the coverage area, and the other two - along the edges of the nail.

But first, you should cover the entire nail plate with a base varnish of a transparent color or a nude shade. This is necessary in order to mask the yellowness - so they look healthier and cleaner, and the tone of the varnish will be much richer.

However, if nails by nature do not have defects, then this stage can be safely omitted.

After that, you need to take a special adhesive tape for applying moon manicure. Usually it is similar in shape to rings, but in the absence of such an attribute, you can cut out arcs of a suitable size from ordinary adhesive tape.

The tape arcs are fixed to the base of the nail and along the edges, after which the remaining area is covered with the basic color scheme and left to dry. Once the varnish is completely dry, you need to very carefully and slowly remove the sticky layer.

In the end, the varnish is covered with a layer of protective enamel, which helps to hide the imperfections of the relief and even out the tone.

It should be noted that the classic version of the lunar manicure involves covering the main part of the nail in red, and it is better to decorate the hole in beige or leave it untreated.

Fashion trends

In recent years, moon manicure has become more fashionable and modern. Stylists allowed themselves to experiment with color and decor. For example, in 2010, a "mirror" manicure was presented at fashion shows - the holes, as it were, turned back, in the opposite direction, and this trend was immediately picked up by many fashionistas.

In recent years, manicure with a luxurious monogram has become widespread., made in black colors - while the main part of the nail plate was covered with a nude shade, and the hole and monogram were made in a dark color.

The combination of French manicure - service jacket and moon decor has become very fashionable; this color scheme looks spectacular and is truly universal.

Not so long ago, the lunar nail design burst into trends, in which not the entire hole is stained, but only a part of it, thus the treated area does not copy the natural features of the nail. A trend similar to this is called a reverse jacket with dark varnish - such a manicure can be considered like a moon manicure, only with a very large hole that takes up almost half of the nail.

The contrasting coating looks very stylish, in which the coating involves the use of both matte and glossy decorative elements.

A few years ago, stylists presented a new type of lunar cover. - yellow-golden triangles are drawn against the background of a khaki or purple coating at the very base of the nail.Of course, this design is very far from the traditional one, nevertheless it was immediately attributed to one of the lunar varieties, while the size of the triangle itself and the shade of the base coat became variable.

Trends of the last season

For the current season, the existing trends in the nail industry have significantly transformed the moon manicure.

One of the trends continues the tradition of triangular design - now the most fashionable socialite divas extend the triangle in the manner of the Eiffel Tower to the very edge of the nail.

Another feature of the last season is the decoration of the hole with transparent varnish., which is fully consistent with the current trend in recent years towards a healthy lifestyle and naturalness in manicure and make-up. At the same time, it is not at all forbidden to use bright and saturated shades for the main tone, scarlet and dark blue are especially popular.

It will look stylish if the color of the coating matches the shade of the lipstick.

If you prefer to decorate your nails with a concave hole, then it is covered with a transparent or light varnish, and matte shades of beige are used as the main tone - this trend is more suitable for gentle and romantic girls.

Manicure for short nails

Lunar manicure suits nails of any shape, but in the case of short nails, a number of nuances should be kept in mind. This is due to the fact that a manicure with a convex hole line visually shortens the nails.

If you follow a few simple guidelines, you can make your nails look longer.

  • You should not make the hole too large, on the contrary, it is better to reduce it a little or even apply a curved thin line along the very edge of the lunula.
  • Try to opt for natural shades of natural light polishes, because dark shades form an overly clear border on the nail, which makes the latter look much shorter than it actually is.
  • As much as you would like, you shouldn't use any additional decors. In the case of short nails, it is better to forget about the glitter coating, with rhinestones and patterns forever - all these decors visually overload the manicure and it looks much wider.
  • On short nails, a combination of a forward and reverse jacket is not recommended.

It may seem that the list of prohibitions is unnecessarily long. However, there are still quite a few options for applying moon coating that will allow you to create a wide variety of combinations of colors and designs, bringing style and variety to your daily look.

For several decades, the trendy lunar cover has been a regular guest on the well-known red carpets of stars around the world and on social events. This is a minimalistic style that attracts with its laconicism, but at the same time allows the image to be not too monotonous and boring.

Such a manicure enjoys the well-deserved love of many stars. - it is he who is shown by Kendall Jenner, as well as Rihanna, Fergie and Beyoncé. And acclaimed burlesque queen Dita Von Teese even launched her line of stylish false nails with a traditional reverse french coat.
