Minimalism as a style originated in the 60s of the last century. At that time, strict laconic lines and shapes, right angles, flat surfaces and a complete absence of decorative elements came into vogue. The style of minimalism has penetrated all areas of creativity: fashion modeling, architecture, interior design and art objects.

Style features

Furniture production also did not stand aside. Minimalism brought to it beautiful clear lines, comfort, expressiveness, high quality of workmanship, elegant finished look.

Modern minimalist sofas have a simple yet sturdy construction, with all lines (vertical and horizontal) parallel / perpendicular to each other. Laconic design, strict simplicity, expressive clear lines are the main distinguishing features of the minimalism style from other fashionable design directions. Upholstered furniture (armchairs, sofas, couches, poufs) made in this style is simple in design, has right angles, regular geometric shapes.

At the same time, decorative elements are completely absent. They are replaced by colors, interesting textures and respectable materials. Upholstery fabrics are often monochromatic. The maximum that a piece of furniture in the style of minimalism can afford - a combination of two or more shades of the same color spectrum or a combination in contrast.

Furniture of this style is very functional, it has enough space inside for storing various items. Simple and laconic design creates the illusion of lightness, comfort, relaxes and calms down after a hard day at work. Such furniture is unobtrusive, does not get bored or annoying, it easily "gets along" with other interior items in a variety of styles.

A minimalistic sofa can be straight, angular and modular.

Straight - a classic of style that will never go out of style. The main advantage of this type of sofa is its small size - such a thing can be conveniently placed in a room with a small footage. The straight sofa can be equipped with various folding mechanisms, with or without armrests. Depending on the size, it can be double or triple.

Angular - is a combination of a straight part and a "chair". It will be an excellent option for rooms where every centimeter of usable area counts. The L-shaped sofa design allows multiple angles to be used. This model is good for receiving guests, comfortable rest and relaxation. It can easily accommodate several people at the same time.

In some models of corner sofas, separate couches are provided, which, using special holders, are connected to each other in accordance with the owner's taste.

Modular - this is style, functionality, the ability to create various combinations and options from individual items. The design of the sofa consists of many sections, the size of the sofa itself depends on their number: the more sections, the longer the sofa. This model is perfect for a living room, home theater, recreation room, it can be easily turned into a sleeping place. The ability to model and create a structure at your own discretion is a distinctive feature of this type of upholstered furniture.

Each type carries a certain functionality; there are folding and non-folding models.

Non-folding sofas structurally fixed in only one stationary form, folding sofa can be easily converted into a bed, making the space even more functional.

Materials (edit)

In the production of furniture in the style of minimalism, natural materials are used more often:

  • wood - all surfaces are made only of it, must be covered with varnish or paint;

  • chromed metal used as sofa legs, gives the product aesthetic elegance;
  • genuine leather or its substitute it is used quite often as a sofa upholstery - a thing in this design looks rich and elegant;
  • drapery fabric of this style - natural linen, matting, high quality satin, silk;

as a filler, rigid springs of various types or more modern and progressive soft fillers are used - polyurethane foam, struttofiber, holofiber.

Selection Tips

There are several factors to consider when choosing a sofa:

  • in what room it will be used, hence its dimensions depend;
  • for what purposes it is purchased - for receiving guests or rest (can be stationary, non-folding) or sleep (folding), here you need to take into account the height of the person who will sleep on it;
  • the frame of the product must be reliable and durable, the folding mechanism must be convenient;
  • obligatory presence of internal storage places;
  • good sturdy upholstery, preferably with impregnation against dirt, moisture and dust absorption;
  • attractive price.

When choosing a sofa, it will be right to pay attention to its color palette.

      A thing in a minimalist style looks good in gray and white, in all shades of pastel, green, beige, blue. The sofas look spectacular in such an interior in a bright color scheme - red, fuchsia, bright blue, in the contrast of white and black. These color combinations perfectly emphasize the style of minimalism, add dynamism, mystery and elegance to the style.
