A sofa is an integral part of any interior, both home and office. One of the most common types of such upholstered furniture is a folding sofa-book. They are reliable and durable. But sometimes they break too. What to do in such cases? Is it possible to repair the sofa yourself? You will find the answers to these questions in the article.

The device of the transformation mechanism

On a sofa with a folding mechanism "Book" has many positive qualities:

  • simplicity and reliability;
  • durability;
  • affordability;
  • ease of transformation;
  • there is a drawer under the sofa in which you can put a change of linen;
  • suitable for installation even in small apartments.

    Of course, there are also disadvantages:

    • even when unfolded, the berth is not very wide;
    • when installing a sofa, you need to leave a small gap between the piece of furniture and the wall.

      How does a sofa-book work? The structure consists of several parts: a base, made in the form of a box, and two soft panels, interconnected by a transformation mechanism. The frame of the base and panels can be made of wood or metal. The "book" mechanism and fastening accessories are always made of high-strength alloys. "Book" provides two positions - a sofa for sitting and a sleeping place.

      Do-it-yourself causes and elimination of breakage

      The most common breakdowns of a folding sofa-book are as follows.

      • Piece of furniture does not fold out or does not fold generally or requires more effort than before. The reason is the jamming or breakdown of the transformation mechanism.
      • Squeaks when changing body position.
      • It's uncomfortable to sit or lie down - the uneven relief of the sofa interferes.
      • Seat panel falls through... The deformation of the lamellas may be the root cause. Replacing damaged parts can help.
      • Surface damage - scratches, chips of frame parts, damaged cover, etc. Damaged wooden parts can be sanded and varnished. The cover is easier to replace, especially for stubborn stains.

      The first type of malfunction (difficulties with transformation) requires checking and / or replacing the sofa folding mechanism itself. You can repair such a breakdown on your own, without the involvement of third-party specialists - of course, if you are at least a little versed in furniture repair. The first step is to carefully disassemble the sofa and inspect the mechanism for damage. If none were found, and the sofa just seizes, lubricate all the nodes with high-quality machine oil. or other lubricant. Check it out. If everything is in order, the renovation is almost complete - all you have to do is assemble the furniture.

      If the problem persists, disassemble the mechanism.

      Examine it carefully and purchase a similar one from a hardware store (you can take it with you as a sample so as not to be mistaken). Then screw it (of course new) to the body and panels of the sofa. Collect furniture. Test the mechanism - fold and unfold the sofa. If everything is in order, lubricate the metal parts with machine oil. (a few drops are enough at the junction of the elements).

        If you are uncomfortable uneven relief of the sofa, you will have to disassemble the deformed panel and try to adjust the springs... Increasing the padding above them may also help. But remember that, most likely, you will soon have to carry out a similar procedure again. It is easier to replace the entire spring block.

        What to do if it squeaks when unfolded?

        If during the operation of furniture unpleasant sounds, in particular, creaking, began to appear, do not rush to throw it away and buy a new one. It is quite possible to solve this problem on your own. First you need to determine which part of the structure squeaks. In the case of a wooden spring sofa, several situations are possible - when sounds are emitted by the body when the load on it increases; when metal springs become the cause of the squeak; and when the unpleasant sound is due to the loosening of the fasteners. Sometimes a squeak can emit a transformation mechanism. In this case, it is usually enough to carry out the procedure for lubricating its units.

        If the squeak is caused by loose fasteners, you just need to tighten them up until they stop.

        In the case when wooden parts make a squeak, there may also be several reasons.

        • Damage to one of the main beams of the structure... If it's a small crack, screw a metal plate to the timber to reinforce it.

        If there is a lot of damage or the crack is deep and long, you will have to replace the deformed timber.

        • Deformation of wooden parts and the appearance of gaps between them... The reason may be swelling of the wood from moisture ingress and subsequent drying. Ordinary PVA glue will help you fix such problems. Put it in a medical syringe and fill in the cracks found. The glue should dry completely, do not touch the sofa until this point.
        • The plywood, from which the bottom of the sofa is usually made, began to sag and creak... Try reinforcing the bottom with extra crossbars. This will help reduce the load on the plywood and distribute it more evenly.

          The most difficult thing to eliminate is the squeak when the spring block is the culprit. If finances allow, the best option would be to replace the entire squeaking block of springs.

          Do not replace individual deformed parts - you will spend too much time and effort, and the result will be minimal.

          If funds are limited, try to fill the springs with foam rubber - the creak will subside for a while.
