A scooter with large wheels is the dream of every keen sportsman and off-road riding enthusiast. Reliable, comfortable, safe, they allow you to storm off-road and move comfortably on an asphalt surface. Both adults and children are happy to master scooters with large wheels, appreciating the speed they develop and the unusual appearance of the equipment.

On such a two-wheeled vehicle, you can easily go on a trip or to work, spend time in the park, join a joint family vacation. Models with a wide deck and high load capacity even allow 2 people to ride at once.

The modern market offers a wide range of equipment for every taste. What should you pay attention to when choosing models with wide wheels and shock absorbers up to 100 kg and other scooters with a longer wheelbase? What to prefer: a football bike or a professional SUV for acceleration up to 30 km / h? Should you consider folding scooters or should you pay attention to models with a solid frame? All this should be properly understood.

Types and device

A scooter with large wheels externally and structurally differs little from its counterparts. But there are also some subtleties that are worth considering. Models with wide wheels are designed to move on different types of surfaces: gravel, sand, soil, asphalt. There are also T-shirts - models with wheels like bicycles. They can have a diameter of 10 to 20 inches, are equipped with spokes, inflatable tires.

According to their species diversity, all scooters with large wheels are divided into the following modifications.

  • Two-wheeled and three-wheeled. Trikes provide for the presence of an extended deck, allowing you to make the technique more stable. But it will be difficult for a beginner to manage them. The 2-wheel scooter is maximally maneuverable and takes up little space.
  • Electrical and mechanical... Electric scooters with large wheels are often equipped with a seat, can reach speeds of up to 50 km / h and are more like mini-versions of mopeds. Charging the battery lasts for 1-2 hours of riding - quite enough to enjoy the ride.

Mechanical models are more diverse, they are driven by the effort of the rider himself.

  • Children and adults... Growth and age parameters are taken into account. Starting with teenage models, the carrying capacity of scooters reaches 100 kg or more.
  • Urban. With wheels up to 200 mm, often fitted with a folding frame. Almost all adult models with shock absorbers, have foot brakes, a lightweight aluminum frame. City scooters with large wheels are quite fast, they can accelerate up to 30 km / h.
  • Off-road... With wheel diameters from 210 to 400 mm, sometimes there are options up to 500 mm. Such models demonstrate their cross-country ability at first glance - they often have a mountain bike handlebar, tires with a pronounced tread pattern, shock absorbers. Off-road scooters do not differ in outstanding speed characteristics, accelerate up to 15 km / h, but are able to confidently hold the road in any weather conditions.

By their design, scooters with large wheels differ little from the classic versions. They contain the following basic elements.

  1. Frame. It can be solid or equipped with a folding mechanism. The frame design includes a steering rack and a deck - a platform on which the rider stands. The surface in contact with the sole of the shoe is made of non-slip material to reduce the risk of injury when riding.
  2. Rack and steering wheel. It serves to control two-wheeled vehicles, it can be adjustable and stationary fixed. On the sides of the central pillar there are handles on which special pads are put on - grips made of polyurethane, neoprene, rubber. If the handles are detachable, locks are additionally attached to the steering wheel to secure them during transportation: such solutions are found in models with a folding frame.
  3. Head tube... It includes the structural elements of the column and the clamp. There is a bearing inside the structure, which ensures smooth taxiing.
  4. Wheels... Tires are made of polyurethane, silicone, rubber tube or tubeless tires can be used. The thickness of the wheel directly depends on its diameter, it can reach 20-64 mm. The larger it is, the more stable and softer the scooter's motion is.
  5. Amortization system... Usually installed on only 1 wheel - front or rear. The spring system on the fork is used on off-road models to help reduce shock loads when traveling on uneven surfaces. Shock absorbers are not used on sports or stunt scooters.
  6. Brake system. Foot options have a Step-on-Brake type design, found mainly on urban scooters. On off-road brakes are set for each wheel separately with manual control, disc or V-shaped design.
  7. Step. It is necessary that the scooter can stand unsupported. It can be included in the design of the scooter by default or used as an option and purchased separately.

As options, there may be sound signal sources (bell, horn), lantern, side lights, reflectors on wheels, hanging bags, bottle holders. In some cases, manufacturers provide a shipping strap or cover in the package.

Design

The choice of design largely depends on how exactly the equipment will be used. For example, white and silver are great for the city, but not very practical off-road. Black, metallic blue looks restrained and serious, suitable for people who want to fit into the busy city traffic. An unusual design of equipment is popular among SUVs. Among the spectacular models - cargo scooters with luggage rack that can be used for shopping trips.

The variants with spoked bicycle wheels also look interesting. The front can be up to 26 inches in diameter, while the rear is usually smaller - up to 8-10 inches in diameter. Unusual bright tires or replacement of spokes with discs look interesting on such scooters. Futuristic kickboards for adults are also amazing - for example, the MUV-e, designed by an Israeli designer, looks incredibly impressive, equipped with a platform for 2 legs. The diameter of the front pair of wheels reaches 320 mm, the rear - 250 mm.

For city riding, it is better to choose a scooter with large tires in a minimalist design. For off-road driving, you can give preference to more brutal design solutions. There must be mud fenders here.

Firms

The brands on the market should be examined in more detail before purchasing a scooter.

  • Yedoo. Czech manufacturer of off-road t-shirt scooters with bicycle wheels. The company has a lot of models to choose from, there are children's and adult series. There is a line dedicated to the world's most famous capitals.

For example, Trail-3 12 equipped with large wheels with a diameter of 305 mm with inflatable tires, made of stainless steel. The set includes a footrest, the model can withstand a load of up to 100 kg.

Most of the scooter brands have 1-2 off-road versions or urban models with increased wheel sizes in their assortment. It is better for the user to make the final choice based on the budget and their own preferences.

How to choose?

The rules for choosing scooters with large wheels are quite simple, but still differ from the recommendations that are usually given when buying classic models. The main focus here is on the wheels. It is customary to refer to the options with a large diameter as 130-500 mm.Urban models are usually equipped with wheels from 180-200 mm, which provide the scooter with a sufficiently high ground clearance.

In addition, the diameter may vary, allowing for better acceleration.

The standard rear wheel diameter is 200 mm. Rigidity ranges from soft 50A to maximum hard 101A, its choice depends on the riding style, rider's body weight. The closer the load on the scooter is to the maximum, the higher this indicator should be.

The material of the tires also matters. The off-road versions use the following materials.

  • Rubber. A dense cast material is used over a plastic or metal rim. This option is quite quiet, is not afraid of punctures and damage, and is resistant to wear and tear.
  • Silicone. Tires made of it are transparent, softer than rubber. They can be used as components of children's off-road models with large wheels, but they do not stand up to long-term and hard operation, they wear out quickly.
  • Polymers (PU, PVC). The fastest wheels are made of polyurethane, providing good acceleration and acceleration. In combination with polymer tires, a rigid rim is used. The material is resistant to wear, does not make noise while driving, and softens minor irregularities well.

Wheels with inflation tires have a classic rim with a hub and an outer rubber tire with an inflation chamber. In operation, such tires are more difficult than others and require a lot of attention.

But they provide the best cushioning, allow you to adjust pressure and make it possible to choose surfaces with different types of viscosity for riding.

When choosing the right scooter model it is imperative to pay attention to other equally important parameters. For example, carrying capacity... Models up to 50 kg are considered children. Teenagers can withstand 70-80 kg of rider's weight. Models up to 100 kg are considered universal. There are also the most powerful ones, capable of handling a load of 120-150 kg.

Electric scooters, city models and SUVs are very different from each other in their characteristics. When it comes to technology for an adult, it is recommended that you definitely pay attention to models that can overcome different weather conditions and road surfaces. If you have to frequently travel to a country road, you should immediately choose off-road models, for high-speed continuous skiing, a more preferable solution would be electric scooter.

Preferred riding style

Stunt scooters never have large wheels - the standard diameter is 100-110 mm. Among the models with increased rim sizes, you can find only options for the city and off-road riding, including those with extreme elements. When choosing a scooter for riding on mountain routes and rough terrain, it is recommended to give preference to models without a folding frame, the most reliable, with a reinforced structure and shock absorbers.

For maneuvering in urban conditions, riding in parks, acceleration and acceleration, you can choose models in the urban style. Large wheels in this case can have a diameter of 200 mm.

Rider height

The higher it is, the more important the telescopic adjustment will be. This will allow the steering column to be raised to the desired level. The maximum limit is 110 cm, the standard handlebar in the adult scooter is focused on the rider's height up to 195 cm. The size of the foot also matters. The preferred length and width of the deck depends on it.

Frame material

Adult scooters sometimes use rare magnesium or carbon alloys - this is typical for models of the elite class. In budget and standard options, the most common steel or aluminum... The first option can withstand significant loads. Stainless steel not afraid of corrosion, ensures long-term use of the scooter in the most adverse conditions. Aviation aluminum - another option for the material for the frame, it is lighter, well suited for folding models.

Ride features

When riding a scooter with large wheels, you should more strictly follow all the recommendations for choosing a riding style. If the ground clearance is small, you should not storm curbs and high obstacles. You cannot ride the scooter without making sure that all its mountings are securely tightened. On models with inflatable wheels, it is recommended to always check the inflation rate of the tires.

Do not accelerate too much on slippery or wet surfaces, especially when using the foot brake on polyurethane wheels.

In the evening, it is forbidden to ride a scooter without special lights - headlights or side lights. In addition, the use of reflective clothing patches is mandatory at night. When riding in any lighting, you must not leave the pedestrian zone; on electric scooters with a power of more than 250 W you need to ride only on the right edge of the carriageway. They are not designed to move on sidewalks.
