The custom of covering your hair not only in warm, but also in summer, has come to us from the depths of centuries. Once upon a time, wearing or taking off a hat had a magical meaning. A woman with a scarf, hat or hat on her head was considered “covered” and protected by a man.

A man taking off his hat in front of someone showed respect to him and emphasized his dependence.

What is a hat?

Hat, as the dictionary of the Russian language says, derived from French, in turn borrowed from Latin. It means a headdress designed to be worn by both adults and children of both sexes. In most cases, a hat means a warm option, although there are also light, summer hats.

All types, models and styles of hats are so diverse that it is quite difficult to even list them, but they can all be classified according to several criteria.

  • By appointment: household, special purpose (professional, national, confessional, sports).

Household hats are hats that we see on people in everyday life, including special occasions: hats, caps. It is these hats that have the largest number of styles.

Special-purpose hats are hats included in a set of professional or sportswear. Examples of professional headwear include:

  • academic square caps (headdresses of graduates of higher educational institutions);
  • headgear, balaclava, peakless cap, cap, garrison cap, beret - headdresses for different types of troops;
  • kamilavka, scufia, miter, klobuk, romano chapel, tiara, gallero - headdresses of representatives of various confessions;
  • skullcap, kokoshnik, namitka, ablavukha, cap, cap, turban, hijab, kasa, yarmulke, bryl, fez, sombrero - national headdresses;
  • a builder's helmet, a maid's tattoo, a doctor's hat, a chef's hat - hats that are fixed and easily recognizable attributes of a specific professional activity;
  • protective helmets, including for riding or cycling;
  • fencing mask;
  • skiing hat;
  • visor (visor for playing golf);
  • baseball cap;
  • pool cap.
  • Seasonality: winter, summer, demi-season.

Winter types of hats can include hats and caps made of dense materials (felt, fur, thick or multi-layered knitwear). Summer hats are mainly designed to protect from the sun and to create a beautiful look. These varieties include panamas, fishnet berets, lightweight caps, lightweight hats. Demi-season models are the most grateful and diverse both in the sense of manufacturing methods, and in the sense of the materials used for this, and in the sense, in fact, of the styles.

  • By age: adults, children, youth.

Of course, gradually the concepts of the relevance of children's models for adults and vice versa are more and more mixed. At present, and on the long-standing adult Paris Hilton, you can see a children's hat with ears and an embroidered cat's face, but at the same time it cannot be said that the girl looks somehow ridiculous. Likewise, young ladies in wide-brimmed hats and young gentlemen in top hats look great at photo shoots.

Another thing is that such adult hats are unlikely to be comfortable for children in everyday life, especially with the current active lifestyle.

Youth hats are an intermediate option that looks great on people of different generations, if the other components of the image look appropriate. In this regard, older people even have a number of advantages over young people: a woman aged 50+ looks great as a woman in a hat-stocking and a down jacket on a ski trip, although at other times she also strikes with the elegance of the classic image in a hat with a veil.

As well as a baseball cap on a man while fishing or a cashmere coat and a strict hat on him during business hours of the week.

  • By material: fabric, fur, yarn, other materials.

What hats are not made of:

  • Fabric - felt, velvet, corduroy, fleece, jeans, tweed, knitwear, cotton, wool. Styles of such hats: all types of hats, beret, Panama hat, bandana, molded hats, caps with ears, helmet, hood, cap, baseball cap.
  • Fur - it is difficult to say which fur hats are not made of (mink, astrakhan fur, rabbit, sheepskin, dog, wolf, beaver, nutria, fawn, sable, arctic fox, fox, raccoon). This section presents a bomber jacket, a ushanka, a gogol hat, a Kubanka jacket, a hat, a boyarka.
  • Yarn - knitted hats are perhaps one of the most common varieties that allow you to embody the most diverse and fantastic ideas (traditional wool or semi-wool, mohair with silk, bouclé and grass, yarn with sequins, calm monochromatic or brain-exploding melange). Knitted hats: cap, chunky knit, knitted bomber hat, hat with a lapel, hats with pompoms of various sizes, turban, beanie, trumpet hat, hat-scarf, hat-helmet, hat with patterns (openwork, arans, ornament).
  • Other materials: relatively traditional (straw, felt) and completely unpredictable (from feathers to diapers - it is from such materials that amazing hats and hats for attending horse races are sometimes created).
  • By the manufacturing method: sewn, knitted, felted, wicker.

Selection Tips

A number of practical and aesthetic considerations should be followed when choosing a hat:

  • The versatility of the headgear. In the event that you need a specific hat for a specific image, then there is no need to come up with universality. If you buy a headdress that, according to your idea, will have to be combined with the maximum of your things, then it is better to stop at some fairly traditional model of calm tones.
  • Convenience. Naturally, when buying an uncomfortable hat or cap for a single, for example, a solemn occasion, you can sometimes be guided by the immortal expression "beauty requires sacrifice." However, if you are going to spend a lot of time in this headdress, then it is worth approaching its choice especially carefully: study the composition of the material from which the hat is made (for example, if you are allergic to wool, you should not buy a headdress made of this material, especially if it is assumed that it will move low on the forehead); the fit of the cap on the head is also important (if it is too loose, you risk losing it, if it is too tight and starts to squeeze your head too much, then you will experience constant discomfort).
  • Style. When buying a very fashionable hat, you should think about whether you can withstand the very style in which it is made (mind you, not the style, but the style) - after all, the aforementioned Paris Hilton in a "cat" hat looks natural precisely because the expression on her face , and demeanor, and in itself her way of life, all this, taken together, do not contradict one another. And such a hat is unlikely to look on a business woman in a classic suit with appropriate manners.
  • Face type. Perhaps everyone already knows about the types of faces, but this does not prevent even stars with personal stylists from making mistakes when choosing hats. For the sake of fairness, it should be noted that sometimes these mistakes help to make the image extraordinary, however, in most cases, it is worth considering not so complicated rules.

Ladies with a triangular face shape should avoid voluminous hats, especially large knits with cuffs or overhanging the forehead. If you have a wonderful oval face shape, then almost any style will work for you, but be wary of tall hats that can lengthen your face. But this is a great option for chubby girls and women.

They should also take a closer look at hats and hats with brims.

  • Appearance color type, hair growth and length. When purchasing a hat (or material for its manufacture), pay attention to your own color type. It happens that both the shape of the hat and its style are perfect for a girl, but when put on, the effect of “disappearing face” is created, or, as it is also called, “you merge”. This is especially true for fur hats, chosen in the same tone as the hair and fur coat. Brunettes are suitable for snow-white, purple, red colors. Blondes - the whole range of pastels, but you can experiment with more saturated colors. The classic black color of the cap can turn out to be quite insidious - such a shade requires an impeccable complexion, all imperfections (uneven skin, an ugly complexion, bruises or bags under the eyes) are able to highlight even brighter.

The height of a woman is also important. If a girl is fragile and short, then a voluminous and high hat is unlikely to suit her, which will make the silhouette disproportionate.

And it will be just as disproportionate if a corpulent lady puts on a tiny hat - in this case, she risks looking like the notorious Freken Bock. A regular full-length mirror will help you to avoid these flaws, in which you can appreciate the entire folding image as a whole.

Hair length and color will also play into your hands if you choose the right hat.

Caps and hats with lapels are suitable for short hair, a romantic beret or an elegant wide-brimmed hat is wonderfully combined with long straight hair.
