To keep your living room or room always modern, you don't need to regularly refresh your renovations. Sometimes it is enough to update only some of the decor elements to make the look of the room sparkle with fresh colors. For example, you can purchase or sew new curtains yourself. In this article, we will consider the current trends in window decoration, as well as talk about the most unusual types of curtains.

What types are in vogue now?

As you know, today minimalism prevails in interior design. At the peak of popularity, simple and naturalistic models. Fashionable curtains most often have a simple cut and one color. However, despite the triumph of brevity, designers are also designers in order to offer us a wide selection of models. Find out which curtains are popular today.

Air

Heavy, dense canvases were replaced by airy and light models that do not impede the penetration of fresh air and sunlight into the hall. One of the trends this season is curtains on the ceiling cornice (for suspended ceilings).

This method of fastening creates the impression that the fabric seems to flow in the air, making the space weightless.

Simple and light uncomplicated nylon curtains look really stylish and expensive when they start from the very ceiling and reach the floor. In this case, you can use pickups, but you can do without them. Such textiles do not overload the interior if it already has bright accents. Such air curtains look most effective on French windows, which involve glazing along the entire height of the wall.

Natural

Linen is more popular than ever this season. It combines environmental friendliness and stylish negligence, so it organically fits into the current styles of loft, Provence, etc. Even if you are not guided by a single direction when setting a room, curtains made from this trendy material can become its highlight. There are interesting flax imitations that look almost transparent. By hanging them without tulle, you will get a stylish window decoration option.

Damask patterns

This ornament is in fashion today, but when choosing such curtains, you should be careful with prints in the interior. Some of the elements can repeat this print, but it does not match with polka dots or geometric patterns.

Gradient

The effect of a smooth transition from one color to another is very popular in room design. The gradient pattern can be seen on the walls, in the furniture, and finally, it has moved on to the curtains. This kind of "ombre" on the windows looks stylish and, if used correctly, can create interesting visual effects.

Pearl luster

Beige, gray are unconditional hits in shades of modern curtains. Now to these restrained noble tones, the sparkle of pearls has been added. Perhaps, an unobtrusive pearlescent shimmer will brighten any room.

Contrast side stripes

Edges in the corners of the curtains add austerity and creativity to the window decor. Such textiles must be selected in accordance with the colors of the room decor. A good option is to purchase sofa pillows in the same color.

New design

This year, designers recommend moving away from ruffles and frills on curtains. Well, if refined simplicity seems too bland to you, then take a look at exotic models in Scandinavian, Roman, English or Japanese styles.

By crossing thin airy canvases with each other, you can get the most beautiful cross models. This unusual and very stylish window design looks great in the living room.

Asymmetry can mean a lambrequin that occupies one side of the window, or air curtains that are picked up to one side. Initially, the canvases can have the most common shape, but due to the unusual ways of picking up, they look very original. The curtain will look beautiful, picked up from one side, revealing a translucent tulle.

If someone wants a different design, you can use the initially beveled panel to decorate the window, laying uniform folds. Adherents of classics and luxury may not worry about it going out of fashion. They can be recommended lambrequins that adorn the upper part of the window. Chosen to match the color of the curtains, they transform the window beyond recognition, making it solemn and elegant.

Original model

Next, you will find out what these or those intricate curtain models are.

English

They are distinguished by a cascade assembly, that is, the fabric is pinned up by means of ribbons sewn on both sides. This makes them neat and unusual at the same time.

Romanesque

They look spectacular on the windows of the hall or living room. They are a canvas draped along the top edge with a regular curtain tape. The type of folds obtained also depends on its type. They can be as follows:

  • columns - the same folds, evenly spaced from each other, going in a row;
  • puffs or waffle - irregular folds along the entire canvas;
  • pencil - a narrower variety of posts;
  • glasses - a beautiful type of drapery, in which the folds look like graceful vessels;
  • bows - simple bows obtained from opposite folds;
  • fan - several folds come from one point.

Japanese

They differ from ordinary curtains in that they consist of several dense fabrics with weights. They move along the walls, can be attached not only at the top, but also at the bottom. The textiles for these models are taken from a dense one that does not fade in the sun.

Control is carried out using cords and an electric drive.

Roman

By design, they resemble blinds, but at the same time they consist of a fabric that forms folds. When unfolded, Roman canvases tightly close the window, and when folded, they open only part of the window or almost all of its size.

Roll

They also roll up and unfold, but at the same time they do not form folds, since the curtain is rolled up in a roll. This is a popular solution for minimalistic interiors, as well as for small spaces where you need to save space.

Chinese

This is a decorative model that looks a bit like a roller blind, but these curtains are not fixed close to the window. In addition, they are assembled from several sections. They are sewn from weightless fabrics and tied with ribbons.

Bamboo

They can be of such varieties as wicker and pleated. Eco-friendly, expensive and at the same time beneficial to health due to their antibacterial properties, the canvases can last for a long time.

Screen

They are equipped with two drawstrings - above and below. Due to this unusual design, the material reliably closes the window and does not move due to the wind. They are usually used in the bathroom and in the kitchen, but if the style allows, then they may well decorate the living room windows.

"Hourglass"

They look perfect on elongated narrow windows. The peculiarity of this style is that the curtain is pulled in the middle with the help of a beautiful catch, which can be additionally decorated.

It is better to use a solid color or a simple print so that it does not distort when stretched.

Thread

They can be not only of thin flowing threads, but also of beads, plastic jewelry on strings, etc. The threads themselves look quite bohemian, if transparent beads are strung as elements, they will play effectively in the sun, if wooden - it will give the room ethnic motives. Can be used instead of interior doors.

Modern tailoring ideas

Today, many women love to do hand-made, so it would be useful to talk about how to make unusual curtains for the hall on your own. By creating them with your own hands, you can put a piece of your soul into the work, as a result of which the room will look truly cozy and original. Find out how you can sew fashionable curtains at home, perhaps these ideas will inspire you.

Roman curtains

They fit organically into a minimalist or Mediterranean style. The process of creating them is painstaking, but the result is worth the effort. So, to make curtains you will need:

  • matter;
  • plastic rings;
  • nylon lace;
  • pins made of wood;
  • thin rail.

First you need to make patterns. To do this, you need to measure the slopes inside the window and find a sheet of paper that is suitable in size. The lines of future folds are marked on it (their size can be from 25 to 40 cm) with a step of 5-7 cm from the top and 10 cm from the bottom edge of your canvas. Now you need to cut out 2 parts - one from the front fabric, and the other from the lining.

Pin them together with pins and sew on a sewing machine.

Then the resulting product is turned inside out and stitched again with the final seam. Next, a line is drawn on the wrong side for the weighting insert, then it is sewn. Also on the seamy side, the lines of the future folds of your Roman curtain are measured. Sew tape up to 2.5 cm wide along each of the lines on each of the two sides of the fabric. A wooden pin will be threaded through it.

A couple of centimeters recede from the top and bend it to the seamy side. Then they apply a tape to it so that one of its edges coincides with the edge of the product, and the other goes beyond the fold of the fabric. Then it needs to be sewn on both sides. At the end of the work, the rail is inserted into the pocket, and the wooden pins are inserted into the drawstring. 3 rings or more are sewn to the webbing of each of the wings. Then the finished product must be fixed.3 nylon cords are threaded through the rings, while their ends should go to one side, falling into one of the metal rings of the cornice, where they are tied.

English curtains

A tough, opaque fabric like linen, chenille, wool, rep or cotton works best for them. The colors of the canvas can be calm monochromatic or include typical English prints in the form of a check, stripes or neat flowers. It is even possible to combine these patterns or repeat the wallpaper print. Before you get started, stock up on the following materials:

  • nylon lace;
  • ribbon with rings;
  • curtain type fabric;
  • rings for curtains.

Add to the size of the cornice from 50 to 80 cm for a two-fold model and from 90 to 120 cm for a three-fold model.

Calculate the length of the curtain using the formula "window height plus 6 cm". Since natural materials are widely used for the manufacture of English curtains, it is worth recalling the peculiarities of working with them. For best results, spray the canvas with a spray gun and iron it gently before cutting.

Cut 2 identical pieces, sew face to face and turn inside out. To create pleats, mark off 200 mm shallow indents at the beginning, in the middle of the curtain and at the end. Then sew the plastic rings on the wrong side in the middle of the curtain in 15 cm increments along the entire length of its bottom. Now build the lifting mechanism from below. Fold the cords in half and tie at the bottom of each fold. Then pull the laces through all the rings. Attach the decoration to the eaves with Velcro. The resulting product can be installed both in the window itself and above it.

Lambrequin

Making it with your own hands is not as difficult as it seems. To create one section of a semicircular lambrequin, you need a trapezoidal piece of fabric. Please note: its height is 1.5 times the height of the future finished element. To calculate its dimensions, use the following formula. The sum of its sides and the length of the top side should correspond to the length of the curtain. To prevent the fabric from fraying, it is better to hem it. On the sides of the resulting trapezoid, you need to sew a tape for curtains and tighten the cord. As a result, you will get a product in the shape of a beautiful semicircle. Make a few more of these motifs, sew loops to them and place them on the curtain.

Selection Tips

Today, the assortment of stores contains many options for fabrics that differ in texture. To choose the most suitable option, you need to consider what requirements future curtains should meet. If you live on the south side or in hot climates, the bright rays of the sun hitting the windows can turn from an advantage to a disadvantage. Then you will need a very dense blackout fabric that prevents the penetration of sunlight - a modern material created specifically for darkening rooms.

If the room is not light enough, then airy translucent curtains will be the best option.

When choosing a curtain model, it is important to take into account the dimensions of the room and the height of the walls. Luxurious curtains with lambrequins and tassels look only in a large room with high ceilings. Accessories in the same style will be very useful in the interior of the room - decorative pillows with tassels, for example. There are several principles that can be followed when choosing the color of the curtains. It can overlap with the shade of walls, furniture or stand out in contrast, but then something should be more active, and something more calm in tone. There are also universal colors that suit almost any interior - these are neutral beige, sand.
