Creating an atmosphere of home comfort in the bedroom of an apartment or private house is impossible without a beautifully designed ceiling. Depending on the style of the room, it can be simple or complex. Among the variety of materials used for ceiling design, stretch fabric is especially popular with customers. The material in this article will be useful to those who want to use a stretch ceiling in the interior, but do not know what it is and how to choose the best option.

What it is?

A stretch ceiling means a frame-type structure on which a special film is stretched. The installation technique of this design requires a so-called heat gun, which helps to heat the material before it is pulled onto the frame. Before tensioning, the panel is cut out with a small allowance necessary for fixing.

Any inaccuracy in the cut is fraught with the fact that the film may be damaged.

Advantages and disadvantages

Stretch ceilings have many advantages. As practice shows:

  • they are durable, and therefore can decorate the bedroom for at least 10 years, provided they are properly handled and timely maintained;
  • the material itself weighs a little, which is why it does not create a special weight load on the floors;
  • the stretch fabric has the widest range of colors and the choice of its design;
  • depending on the variety, this material has the ability to visually increase the space;
  • the design of such a ceiling allows, if necessary, to level the height of the walls;
  • the material of the stretch fabric does not cause allergies, it is non-toxic, suitable for decorating bedrooms with allergy sufferers and children;
  • the stretch film does not change its properties for a long time, it is resistant to temperature changes, fungus and mold;
  • due to their resistance to fading, stretch ceilings can be used even in sun-drenched bedrooms;
  • installation technology can be very diverse, including with built-in backlight;
  • by means of a stretch ceiling, you can zone the bedroom space, introducing an unobtrusive organization into it;
  • the material is elastic, stretches and returns to its original shape, and therefore it must be restored in case of leaks from the apartments on top;
  • the design can be different, which affects the cost and complexity of manufacturing.

    Along with the advantages, stretch ceilings for the bedroom have several disadvantages:

    • regardless of the type of film, it does not withstand significant mechanical damage;
    • with the appearance of a cut, the question of dismantling arises, since the stretched film will tear further;
    • more complex structures of stretch ceilings steal the height of the walls, which is bad when it is already insufficient;
    • not all types of films look beautiful in a particular room, sometimes, due to their reflectivity, they overload the space;
    • when making complex frames, you have to turn to professionals, and this implies additional expenses for repairs;
    • with curves and walls that are not the same in width and length, you have to spend a lot of time on preliminary preparation of the base for a stretch ceiling;
    • the cutting of the film should be as accurate as possible, otherwise it will have to be thrown out, because it will not be possible to glue the piece in the future;
    • in small towns, stretch ceilings are sold with limited colors and textures;
    • custom design at the request of the customer is not cheap.

    Today, manufacturing companies offer the attention of buyers a stretch fabric of three types: matt, glossy and satin... However, stretch ceilings can be classified according to several criteria. For example, according to the technology of execution, they can be sutured and seamless... This is explained by the width of the film used in the work. As a rule, today it is produced in widths of 3.5 and 5 m.

    In small rooms, a narrow film is usually used, its width is enough in order to perform a seamless type of tension. A five-meter stretch fabric is more expensive due to the texture of the material. This option is good for use in spacious bedrooms, because the seams between the narrower canvases will be visible, which will ruin the overall look of the ceiling design.

    According to the degree of complexity, designs can be single-level, two-level and multi-level. In fact, in a simple version, it is a film stretched over a previously prepared frame. In the complex, it is a combination of a stretch film with drywall. The customer chooses the type of decoration based on the available space and specific style.

    For example, a single-level stretch ceiling is used in apartments or houses with small bedrooms. The decoration of such a film can be texture, color, ceiling plinth. These are options for bedrooms with a ceiling height of 2.5-2.7 m and an area of 12 to 18 sq. m.

    Such designs are lightweight, they can be decorated with photo printing and various types of backlighting.

    Duplex and tiered systems are combined options. Here the film is stretched taking into account the gypsum plasterboard figures. For example, it can be located at the bottom, and also be part of the decor, filling a plasterboard box-frame. Such ceilings are especially beautiful and today allow you to add elegance to even the most common bedroom design.

    They are used in rooms with high walls, and this can be either the entire ceiling space or a separate part of it. Decoration can also be done both for the entire area of the ceiling, and for its specific segment.... For example, it can be asymmetrical or even accentuating one part. It can also be a differently designed space of the bay window ledge.

    Materials (edit)

    In the manufacture of stretch film, manufacturers use polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and seamless synthetic material... Despite the fact that the finished film has a sufficient width, it is made from PVC wound in rolls with a smaller width. The type of material can have a different type of texture and front surface. Glossy materials are packed in rolls of 1.3, 1.5, 1.8 m, while matte materials are in widths of 1.5, 2.0 and 2.7 m.

    In most cases, it is PVC fabrics that are sold in our country: their share in the domestic market is 90%, while tissue systems account for only 10%. At the same time, in the production of panels, individual sections are welded. The surface type of this material, in addition to glossy and matte, can be pearlescent.

    These films are created from a chemical, a type of plastic, by polymerizing vinyl chloride. These output materials can be translucent, as well as having a specular reflection.

    Their textures can imitate marble, metal, wood, whitewash, stucco. This group includes two varieties: matte and glossy.

    The satin type of surface is obtained by polishing, which gives the base a shine. It should be noted that satin stretch ceilings are a type of film type. These are not textile options, since this material is based on PVC.

    These materials differ from the first two types only in the degree of polishing, which can be insignificant or pronounced (up to mirror polish).

    The transparent PVC film, from which the stretch fabric is made, is not toxic in the room. However, the material itself is harmful under extreme conditions and, upon decomposition, releases hydrochloric acid (at 150 degrees). PVC is obtained from chlorine formed during the electrolysis of a solution of sodium chloride and oil, which gives ethylene during processing.

    In the production of fabric systems, the surface of polyester panels is coated with a polyurethane compound. Sometimes fiberglass and natural threads are used in production, but they are always diluted with nylon and polyester fibers. Polyurethane, which is used to process the fabric, replaces rubber, but it cannot save the fabric from the destruction of the structure during prolonged contact with water.

    These materials are more expensive and wider, they can be up to 5.5 m wide. In comparison with film counterparts, they are more durable and heavy. However, their assortment is not as extensive as the choice of texture. In addition, they do not retain moisture. But this is compensated by the possibility of painting the panels if necessary.

    Color spectrum

    The color scheme of the stretch fabric for the bedroom today can be very diverse. However, if designers have a professional approach to the play of colors and textures, it is difficult for a common man in the street to choose bright or harsh colors for their bedroom. And therefore preference is usually given to light and muted colors.

    And this is not without reason: it is light shades that can visually enlarge the available space, bringing lightness and a relaxing atmosphere into it.

    The relevance of a single white is also explained by the fact that it allows you to use different colors in the interior, without interfering with the change in basic tones. In addition, white is considered a classic: it is not emotional itself, but takes on the desired color depending on which color it is combined with. Two-tone design options look beautiful in the bedroom. For example, it can be a combination of white with shades of the pastel group (light blue, pink, lavender, pistachio, sunny, peach, beige).

    Combinations with diluted white natural paints (green and wood) are also appropriate. Color solutions allow you to set the necessary tone for a specific style of bedroom design. If the interior needs bright colors, they are added in dosage. For example, in a ceiling design, this can be the tone of the pattern.

    Sometimes the usual color is enough, and the role of contrast goes to the color of the ceiling lamp.

    Fashionable tones in the design of stretch ceilings are considered today turquoise, caramel, peach, heavenly, sky blue, beige, milky. As for popular contrasts, today it is a combination of vivid color with neutral white. For example, duets of white with caramel, cocoa with milk, creamy, gray-turquoise, chocolate are popular. Red, black and sharp orange tones in the design of the ceiling should not be used: they irritate the eyes and fail to create a relaxing atmosphere.

    Design options

    The design of the ceiling space in the bedroom can be very diverse - from simple to pretentious. The degree of appropriateness of a particular option is determined by the style of a particular room, its illumination, the location of the windows, the area and the customer's preferences. In a simple version, this is a regular film stretched over the entire ceiling area. Optionally, this can be:

    • stepped design with a different number of levels;
    • structures using hovering systems;
    • design using wavy lines and curly contours;
    • the use of film as an accent against the background of a plasterboard ceiling;
    • design with the transition of a part of the film to the wall in the headboard area;
    • combining films of different textures to create versatility;
    • backlit design option requiring film punctures;
    • a combination of film with a picture or 3D photo printing and drywall.

    As for the shape of the stretch ceiling, it can be either traditional rectangular or otherwise. For example, the film can be enclosed in a round, oval or elliptical plasterboard box. In addition, it can be a wave design, a zigzag design, or even an abstraction with an emphasis on geometry. The combination of matte and glossy coatings in one room is a fashionable trend in the design of the ceiling space today.

    The film can be located in the center of the ceiling, enclosed in a box, framed by a backlit frame. In addition, it can be a 3D design element that creates a three-dimensional effect. It can be located above the bed, along the wall at the headboard, accentuating two zones (for example, above the dressing table and the bed).

    Lighting features

    The stretch film is convenient in that it allows the use of various lighting systems in the installation, including various progress innovations and design ideas. Moreover, it can be external or built-in, as well as combined. It is through lighting that you can add elegance to even a laconic single-level stretch ceiling.

    Today it is customary to decorate the ceiling with modern LED lighting, which can be used in chandeliers and additional lighting fixtures.

    For example, it can be flat panels of different geometric shapes, spotlights, soffits, spots with adjustable angle of inclination of the luminous flux... In addition, you can illuminate the ceiling using a flexible LED strip with a different set of LEDs per 1 sq. m.

    Often it is the chandelier that gives the ceiling a special flavor. But in order for it to look impressive, you have to be extremely careful when choosing a stretch film.

    Let's say a spider chandelier needs a laconic ceiling system without any pattern, otherwise it will be lost against the general background... In addition, you can decorate the ceiling with chandeliers, consisting of a mass of small bulbs without shades. Such products look quite original and unbeatable. If you want something different, you can build spotlights into the ceiling with an equal pitch.

    The LED strip can be hidden in a box or behind a molding.

    If you want to change the color of the ceiling from time to time, this can be achieved by using a white stretch film and special lamps. The use of RGB backlighting is convenient because, at the request of the owner of the room, the lighting can change the shade of the glow.

    When glowing in pink, blue, lilac, yellow and other tones, the backlight will give the white ceiling the desired shade. Moreover, if a fiber optic is mounted inside, the effect at the ceiling when the light is turned on will be beautiful and deep. Such ceilings can be decorated without a chandelier at all.

    When choosing lighting devices, it is important to take into account their compatibility with the texture of the stretch film. Some of the materials, due to their high reflectivity, create glare, while others diffuse light more softly. For example, a satin ceiling does not give such reflections as mirrored or glossy.

    If you want to choose a mirror option without fail, it is better to do not with a chandelier, but with a panel lamp.

    How to choose?

    The choice of one or another stretch ceiling option is based on a number of factors. For example, before buying, you need to inspect the layout of a room, because the complexity of the perspective can make it difficult to choose the type you like. The presence of protrusions, communication systems may require masking. This, in turn, can call into question the choice of tiered construction in rooms with low walls.

    As for the texture, it is chosen on the basis of the area of the room and taking into account the possibility of the material. For example, in a small room, a white ceiling would look better without excess reflectivity. If the film reflects everything below, it will be difficult to look at the ceiling. Mirror types of material will create an increase in the number of objects in the bedroom, which will visually overload the interior, creating a sense of chaos in it.

    By texture and color

    Possibilities of the film for ceiling decoration the bedroom needs to be used correctly.

    • To compensate for the lack of illumination in the daytime, it is better to choose a white satin-type canvas. This film will not reflect everything that is below, but will visually ennoble and increase the space.
    • Mirror or metal type of texture and simplicity of design is needed where brutal interior trends (brutalism, art deco, art nouveau, hi-tech) are chosen as the basis for stylistics.
    • The color of the ceiling should not merge with the tone of the flooring, this will visually reduce the height of the walls and make the room look unprepossessing.
    • If you need to choose between a pattern and a texture, preference should be given to the type of surface, since it is he who makes the interior more advantageous.
    • Material structure for small bedrooms doesn't have to be intrusive or complicated.
    • In the interior of classic styles you can use both glossy and satin material.
    • Do not overload the bedroom with dark colors, such tones will put pressure on the atmosphere.
    • For rooms with south-facing windows, cool paints can be used in the design, and those looking to the north need warm ones.

    Given the picture

    Today it is fashionable to use panels with a pattern or photo printing to decorate the ceiling. On the one hand, this design is very attractive and allows you to give the bedroom a special atmosphere. However, what can be seen on photo prints does not always look beautiful in the bedroom.

    Bulky flowers, giant drawings in fact create a depressing atmosphere, putting pressure on the subconscious level on everyone in the room.

    For example, the same design with a window, which would seem to create a sense of air, gives the room the appearance of a hole with a window on the ceiling. If, at the same time, military aircraft are still flying on the ceiling, the design is doomed to design failure. Giant pigeons and paintings with huge faces look terrible on the ceiling. This is unacceptable in the bedroom, because it does not create an atmosphere of relaxation, but, on the contrary, makes it aggressive.

    Choosing a design option with photo printing, it is necessary to rely on several nuances.

    • Drawings in the design of a stretch ceiling are needed only where they are needed in style.
    • Monograms in the corners of the stretch film look better, rather than a centered drawing, not supported by a frame or other outline.
    • If the design provides for decorating the stretch fabric a massive chandelier, you should not choose a film with a large pattern, this will overload the design.
    • Do not repeat the drawing from any interior details: the ceiling is made for a long time, while the elements of the interior composition can change much more often.
    • You need to choose the right picture, considering the visual proportions. Even the starry sky looks better on stretch film than half-meter flowers.
    • You should not choose intimate photo printing with explicit scenes for the bedroom.
    • Choosing a print, you can get by with a neutral pattern, not tied to the season.

    By the degree of complexity of design and style

          Each of us wants the design to be perfect. But often the result is far from the desired one, since it is not related, for example, to the size of the bedroom itself. It is also worth considering here that the bedroom is a place of relaxation and rest, and therefore the ceiling should not visually load the space. In this case, you need to choose the option taking into account the style that suits the given room.

          • For small bedrooms you need to select minimalistic one-level solutions that are not overloaded with lines and finishes. Nothing superfluous is needed here, the lamps are chosen small, laconic plan.
          • Spacious room with high ceilings can be decorated with a two-level structure using two colors of the stretch fabric.
          • In order not to overload the interior with the complexity of the ceiling design, it is better to rely on lamps, choosing them to match the concept of stylistics.
          • For creative directions of interior design it is worth choosing laconic options for decorating the ceiling, diluting its texture (for whitewash, concrete, metal) with built-in point-type illumination.
          • For country, boho, avant-garde, kitsch it is better to rely on the simplicity of the ceiling, since the interior of such styles is quite colorful and does not need additional complication.
          • Styles classic, neoclassic, Italian and English need to be supplemented with a stretch canvas with a massive chandelier, moldings and imitation stucco moldings.
          • Interiors in modern style, art nouveau can be decorated with a stretch film with a glossy texture, these directions like a demonstration of the gloss and gloss of the materials used.
          • Wherever the style provides for an abundance of accessories (for example, in Moroccan, Arabic styles), the ceiling should not be too pretentious, but gilding will be very useful here.
          • Eco and ethnic styles need to select canvases with imitation of appropriate materials (for example, for light wood, whitewash, painting).
          • Open plan the design of the ceiling can provide for the use of foil with islands (for example, to accentuate a berth).
