It is very important to arrange a sleeping place, because the correct organization of a place for rest ensures healthy sleep and well-being. Every year leading manufacturers develop new models of comfortable beds. But not everyone has high aesthetic and functional indicators. The podium bed is a model in which both properties are harmoniously combined. It makes the room more aesthetically attractive and at the same time solves the issue of placing things.

Advantages and disadvantages

There are many benefits to installing a podium bed. Let's consider them in more detail.

  • Saving space. A large number of things can be placed in the boxes and on the shelves that are under the bed. This will make it possible to free up space in the room, which is especially important in small apartments and studios, where each cabinet or rack takes up an area that can be used in a different way.
  • Space zoning... This is true for both large rooms and small ones. The bed, installed on a "pedestal", divides the room into zones for various purposes without the need to install partitions. This way, the space in the room is preserved.
  • Additional area. Mobile children's and adult beds, in which the mattress is folded or rolled up, make it possible to use the space where they sleep during the day as a playground, work area, creative activities, etc.
  • External attractiveness... The variety of design solutions in which podium beds are produced makes it possible to choose the right option for a room of any size.
  • Any room with a bed like this looks exquisitely.

Such products can be manufactured by individual design. This makes it possible to fill the foundation in accordance with personal needs: to make the drawers and shelves the way the owner requires. This primarily applies to wireframes.

There are also disadvantages.

  • The design is limited in mobility. It is difficult to move it. To move such a product, it will have to be disassembled.
  • The model will not suit everyone. Climbing high podiums can be difficult for children and the elderly.
  • In rooms with low ceilings, it will not work to put a bed with a high podium. The area of the room must also be taken into account so that the sleeping place does not become the only furniture that takes up the entire space.
  • The price of products is often quite high.

Views

Catwalk beds come in a wide variety of models and designs. According to their functional accessories, such products are divided into 3 groups.

  • Te that perform technical functions... These beds have a base, thanks to which it is possible to hide communication systems or uneven surfaces of the floor and walls. In addition, additional boxes can be provided to store things inside the structure.
  • Decorative patterns. Their main function is to decorate the interior. They zone the space and adjust its size if necessary.
  • The third group includes combined models... They combine the functions of technical and decorative items.

According to the type of foundation, beds with a podium are divided into monolithic, frame and retractable.

Monolithic

In such models, the foundation is a one-piece structure. Beds with a monolithic base look very high-status and representative, in addition, they are unusually durable. If we talk about the shortcomings, there are two of them:

  • inability to move the bed;
  • it is difficult to install in apartments, since concrete is used for pouring the foundation.

In a country cottage, on the contrary, such a model will look harmonious if there is enough space in the room.

Before deciding to install such a bed, you should calculate whether the floor will support such a weight.

Wireframe

The easiest and most convenient option for arranging a bed with a podium. The frame is the foundation. With a wireframe, you can compensate for asymmetric surfaces. The factory version has a standard design without any additional drawers. Moreover, such models are cheaper than custom-made ones. Such beds always look attractive, they may have bedside shelves and / or original headboards. And the niches and drawers provided for by the design are quite enough to accommodate a large number of things. If you have such a bed, you can save on buying a wardrobe, chest of drawers or shelving.

If the design solution provides for disguising niches and drawers under a regular foundation, the bed looks lighter, and the room looks free. Convenient when storage systems are located not only under the berth, but also on the sides. Side systems can accommodate books, magazines, and other things the owner needs.

With pull-out bed

In small rooms or studios, a retractable or roll-out design will become an absolutely irreplaceable thing. The principle of its device is that the berth is not visible, it appears only when it is pulled out of the podium, most often rollers are used for this purpose. In the daytime, on the podium, you can play, be creative, read.

Catwalk materials

If we talk about beds with monolithic foundations, then for their manufacture you need:

  • wooden boards - formwork is made of them, it is better to choose the least knotty material - pine, spruce, larch;
  • concrete - it is poured into the formwork;
  • frame, it is also made from a bar of wood or chipboard, some craftsmen manage to make an excellent frame from pallets - literally, from improvised means, pallets are used instead of a bar;
  • the bed itself is a mattress and other components.

In the area where the bed is planned to be installed, formwork is placed and concrete is poured there. A floor covering is laid on top of the finished base. Next, the frame is installed, after which the bed is placed on the frame. It is a very strong and durable, but, unfortunately, absolutely not mobile and extremely massive structure.

As for the frame models, they are assembled from lightweight timber or steel structures. People who love and know how to tinker will be able to create them on their own, others buy and assemble ready-made ones. Most of the runway beds sold today are exactly like this. You just need to choose the one that you like more than others and buy it.

In a pull-out bed, in addition to the traditional frame, rollers are used, with the help of which the mattress rolls out of the podium... The mattress in this model is thinner and folds. The easiest way to assemble the podium is from chipboard, laminated chipboard, ready-made wooden blocks and furniture boards. When assembling, take into account the weight that the frame must withstand. The maximum allowable weight for the frame is from 450 to 700 kg per sq. m.

Also, for the construction of the frame (it does not matter if it is a retractable model or not), you will need self-tapping screws, fasteners, tools - from a drill to a hammer.

Styles

The functional and aesthetic aspects of the product are very important. But the combination of the bed with the rest of the interior items, its style is equally important. You need to choose a model that will fit well into the environment, will become its harmonious part.

  • Classical the style assumes a strict, but not devoid of decorative elements, the look of the bed. An excellent solution would be to choose an expensive fabric for upholstery. You can fit both the frame and the head of the bed. The number of decorations should not be large, but a certain amount - brushes on the bedspread, exquisite drawer handles, etc. - is acceptable. Most often, however, niches, drawers and shelves in classic models are masked.
  • Loft style - it is always deliberately rough, raw material. Solid wood beds are very natural and natural. As a rule, loft-style products have a natural color; artificial aging of the material is permissible. In contrast to such a frame, a good solution would be to choose a modern mattress with natural filling - for example, coconut coir.
  • Japanese the style dictates the need to choose a low podium, the sleeping place should be mobile. During the day it is removed, and laid out at night. Also, the Japanese-style design provides for a large number of small pillows with natural filling. This style is characterized by minimalism, functionality of each component.
  • High tech - a style in which technological solutions play a major role. Forms for it are geometric, strict or smooth, streamlined. The design should be non-standard. The main thing is a device in which various technological innovations can be provided, for example, the extension of the mattress using the remote control. Models with lighting are also good, thanks to them the bed seems to float in the air.
  • Sea style easy to recognize by the traditional colors of white, beige and blue. It is also characterized by simple geometric shapes, as for the decor, these are starfish, anchors, stripes, ships, etc.
  • Style country provides for the use of natural materials and patterns such as cages, stripes, peas. Dark tones are not used in country.
  • Art deco also has its own colors: gold, burgundy, chocolate, black. Furniture forms are massive, status. The use of expensive materials is another distinctive feature of the style.
  • Scandinavian the style is minimalistic, the colors are traditionally white, beige, the materials are natural, mainly wood. It is not customary to paint wooden parts; you can enhance the color and texture by covering the product with varnish.
  • Fans eclectic style will appreciate the possibility of using the maximum amount of decor.The bed can be decorated with a canopy, pillows, supplemented with lighting or sconces. Colors are allowed different, but it is better to stay on bright colors.

It is better to choose children's models in soothing colors. The single folding model can be equipped with a lifting mechanism and, when folded out, can be converted into a double model. You should choose natural materials both for the podium and for the mattress. The latter must be rigid, orthopedic - to form the correct posture. Modern manufacturers offer a lot of environmentally friendly solutions.

It is important that the color of the catwalk matches the shade of the flooring rather than contrasting with it. This will make the transition from the floor to the box harmonious and not cutting the eyes.

Shapes and sizes

Products with a podium can be of different shapes. This will allow them to fit into rooms with different areas. The bed can be:

  • rectangular;
  • square;
  • round;
  • semicircular.

Square the bed will look good in a long, elongated room. It will adjust the space, make the room more proportional. If we talk about a square, the size 160 by 180 can also be attributed to a similar shape.

Round the model is optimal for rooms with a large area, for example, for studio apartments. Such a bed will always become an accent that attracts the attention of everyone who enters the room.

Due to the shape, it will have to be placed either in the center of the room or in the corner. In any case, it takes up the maximum amount of space compared to other models.

A semicircular product is more compact, it can be placed against a wall. Such models look very original, but they are most often designed for one person. A double semicircular model will take up too much space.

Whatever the shape of the podium bed, it will allow save on furniture... The purchase of such a bed will allow you to avoid buying a bookcase, wardrobe, chest of drawers for linen, shelving - depending on the configuration that the bed has.

When choosing the shape and model of the bed, you should pay attention to some parameters.

  • The material from which the product is made, namely, its strength and environmental safety.
  • Weight of the structure. Ideally, the bed should be able to easily support the weight of 2 adults.
  • Podium height. A person, standing at its highest point, should not rest his head on the ceiling (or on the second tier, if it is provided for by the structure).
  • The number of people who will sleep on the bed, as well as their age. For a child or an elderly person, it is better to choose short models; for adults, the podium can be anything.
  • The amount of free space that is available in the room. The shape of the bed depends on it. It is equally important to think over the place where the product will be installed. It is not recommended to place wooden models close to a radiator or near a window if it is not sufficiently insulated.
  • In the case when the bed is equipped with niches, the podium should not be higher than 0.4 m.
  • If the height of the podium is more than 0.4 m, then you need to climb onto the bed using steps.

Location options

The design of the podium is so diverse that it can be placed in almost any room where there is little free space.

In the bedroom

If the bedroom is small, then a retractable frame bed with niches and drawers - what you need to free up space from unnecessary shelves and shelves and at the same time give chic and originality to the room. The model is chosen in accordance with the style in which the room is decorated, as well as with the dimensions and height of the ceiling in the room.

In the living room

An interesting idea for a living room in a one-room apartment will be bed with a lifting mechanism. At night, the podium is lowered, and in the morning it rises vertically to the wall. This frees up the room almost completely, however, nothing can be stored in such a structure.

You can also zone the room, clearly marking the sleep and relaxation section with the help of the podium.It is these models that make it possible to correct the not very successful layout of the room, visually correcting its proportions.

In the attic

An element such as an attic can be found in country houses. And, if it's large enough, it will fit a bed with a podium. If there is not much space, then you can try the "folding" version, that is, the mattress, assembled, pressed vertically against the wall.

On the kitchen

The kitchen can also become one of the "backup" sleep options. Kitchen corners often have roll-out bed... Thus, the sofa seat turns into a full bed. And the drawers at the bottom make it possible to store a lot of things - from large pots to tablecloths and towels.

On the balcony

This is possible only in apartments or houses with glazed balconies. It is advisable to install double-glazed windows, and if a person lives in a region with severe winters, then triple ones. Floor heating will not be superfluous either.

As for the location of the bed, it all depends on the area of the balcony. Ideally, the podium is set up on the balcony, without involving the territory of the room. The size of the bed depends on how many people will sleep on it. The least expensive option is a single bed that can be folded to the size of an armchair. But, if the area of the balcony allows, then a 1.5-bed or 2-bed will be an original solution. And the podium will solve the issue of storing things, unloading the room from them.

Examples in the interior

It is worth paying attention to how a podium bed might look in different rooms:

  • not a bed, but a whole room with a sleeping place, a bookcase, a wardrobe and shelves;
  • the royal bed with steps, into which are built-in niches inconspicuous to the eye for storing things;
  • original design solution - the mattress seems to be laid on an array of square roughly processed logs, ideal for a studio in the "loft" style;
  • a bed that will appeal to a teenager, there is a bookcase, a work area, many drawers for things, and an original wall at the head of the bed;
  • the roll-out model is ideal for a small nursery;
  • a round bed in an eco-friendly style - with wicker drawers and a jute mattress.
