Previously, canvas was a rough linen canvas, which was later made from cotton. At the present time, this material is significantly different from the old model. Now it is a densely mixed fabric with impregnation, and its feature is a clearly marked weave of threads.

Composition and characteristics

Previously, hemp fabric was produced to create sails; to increase strength, the product was impregnated with wax. By the way, textiles for many peoples were made from hemp, for example, among the Slavs it was almost impossible to imagine running a peasant economy without hemp. The difference in the material consisted in a clear interlacing of the threads. The fabric was rather rough. The Mediterranean hemp bore the name cannabis, hence the name - canvas.

It is fair to say that sailcloth was the predecessor of the now known material. Outwardly, a modern canvas is similar to an old canvas that bore the same name, but the structure and composition differ significantly. Manufacturing technology is also a significant difference. At present, the most famous canvas producers in Russia are factories in Ivanovo, Ivanovo region, Altai Territory.

The modern version has a two-layer structure. The surface consists of polyester (85%) and nylon (15%). As part of the base, polyester is combined with cotton or linen in a ratio of 65%: 35%, respectively. A special impregnation serves as an effective protection of the surface from water and dirt, and also greatly facilitates the care of the product. Special production methods give the material colossal strength and durability.In appearance, like the old sample, the fabric resembles canvas. It is also often called "canvas".

Products made of canvas have wear resistance indicators that are 10 times higher than GOST: in its original state, the canvas can remain for several decades. If we consider the tactile properties of the material, then it is worth noting its extraordinary softness, it is quite pleasant to touch the matter. This is a comfortable product that also features high levels of breathability. The positive qualities also include the ability to maintain shape, the ability not to stretch and not shrink, water-repellent properties and resistance to dirt, lack of tendency to form pellets.

The canvas is colored by means of thermal printing, and therefore this product usually has a bright saturated color. Previously, natural canvas had an ashy color, but thanks to modern technologies, it is possible to create very bright, juicy images on the canvas. Thanks to the special structure, whole paintings and prints can be depicted on the fabric, and even a complex pattern gives the impression of being handmade. The image of any texture is very pronounced on a material such as canvas.

By the way, materials from a natural gray shade also remain very popular. They can be used to design images, for example, in an ecological or Mediterranean style.

Varieties

It is possible to classify canvas according to density indicators. This is determined by the number of threads in one square centimeter. There are two options:

  • 180-240 g / sq. cm is a thin matter that is usually used to make clothes;
  • from 320 g / sq. cm - a denser fabric that is used for sewing bags and shoes.

Where is it applied?

Despite the large amount of synthetic fibers in the canvas, outwardly it looks quite natural. The material is widely used in the furniture industry:

  • it is suitable as an upholstery of soft pieces of furniture;
  • covers can be made from it;
  • colorful curtains are made from this fabric.

The use of canvas is especially common when creating a nautical style or ecological design, this is possible due to its natural appearance. Furniture from canvas will also look harmonious in interiors of destructivism or back-to-the-roots styles.

Most often, in the manufacture of furniture, a special kind of canvas created by Arben is used.

Bags, backpacks are sewn from canvas, and the production of army paraphernalia is widespread. A dense and warm working shape is obtained from this material. Also, the fabric is suitable for the manufacture of sports and corporate clothing and footwear. It is comfortable and does not irritate the skin. As for casual canvas clothes, most often these are jackets and vests in a certain style.

For example, representatives of the hippie, country, military, boho direction often refer to this material, themed costumes for the ethnic style, created from canvas, are known.

If we talk about bags and backpacks, then there is no specific stylistic solution - these items are convenient for everyone. They look quite aesthetically pleasing, even, without frills, are distinguished by their strength and durability. Women's bags can include strict elements or elegant details in the design; everyday models are perfect for a business and active person. Shoes made from this fabric are often represented by a variety of sneakers, sneakers, moccasins, it is suitable for people of any age. It is warm in such shoes in cold weather, and comfortable and cool in summer.

High strength characteristics make it possible to use the presented material for the manufacture of awnings, tents, tents, collapsible gazebos. Canvas is also used in arts and crafts.Known use of canvas in the manufacture of protective knee pads and elbow pads for tourism and extreme sports.

Often this material is used as raw material for sewing decorative design elements.

How to care?

Canvas maintenance is very simple. The main rule to remember when washing is that the Teflon impregnation must not be damaged. If this layer is destroyed, then the material will lose its protective properties and quickly become unusable.

The stain that appears on the surface can be easily and quickly removed with an ordinary damp sponge or soapy water. Periodically, the product needs to be shaken and vacuumed with a soft brush.

It is recommended to wash a thing, if necessary, in a washing machine on a gentle mode using warm water. The canvas dries very quickly, creases and marks after washing do not remain on it.

The need for ironing usually does not arise, but if you cannot do without it, then it is recommended to use a stream of steam or a cold iron.
