Sofa beds with orthopedic mattresses are a very attractive type of furniture. They allow you to both get a good sleep at night and have a pleasant time during the day. But the correct choice and consideration of the main features play an important role.

Advantages and disadvantages

A sofa bed with an orthopedic mattress (or, as they sometimes say, with an orthopedic type base) is very useful in everyday life. With its help, you can successfully solve a number of sleep problems and avoid fatigue in the morning. The sofa is ergonomic and at the same time relatively compact. When difficult, it turns into a great place for leisure, meeting guests and the like. It is comfortable to sit and lie on the couch during the day with a book, magazine, tablet.

The range of sofas today is simply huge. Therefore, almost all people can choose a suitable model. You just need to approach this matter thoughtfully and carefully. Some of the models, which have an intermediate position when laid out, effectively replace the chair. Two or even 3 pieces of furniture in 1 is the dream of the owner of a small-sized apartment, and it comes out more profitable for the money.

Some versions are equipped with a topper, that is, a medium-sized auxiliary mattress. It allows you to more accurately adjust the rigidity of the furniture. But sofas with orthopedic mattresses also have a weak point: they will have to be assembled and disassembled every day. At the same time, it is additionally laid out (bed linen is removed). Toppers help to remove the joint that appears in the unfolded state, however, they must be bought separately, and such mattresses have almost no effect on the wear of mechanisms.

It is also necessary to figure out what the orthopedic mattress is better or worse than the anatomical counterpart.These varieties are very often (and completely in vain, note) confused. The orthopedic effect implies maximum support for the spine. It avoids curvature of the back due to increased rigidity. Anatomical mattresses very closely follow the shape of the body and guarantee the maximum level of comfort.

Orthopedic models:

  • very effectively fight against salt deposition and osteochondrosis;
  • allow you to rest very effectively;
  • deal with many causes of insomnia and headaches;
  • suppress (weaken) arthritic pain;
  • formed from fire-resistant materials;
  • reliably protected from dust mites;
  • do not tend to accumulate static electricity;
  • they absorb little water (and sweat, of course, too);
  • provide efficient air circulation.

But this does not mean that an orthopedic mattress is ideal for all cases. Such products are quite expensive. They can only last for a long time if strict operating rules are followed. If you allow children to play on a sofa with an orthopedic mattress, you cannot count on it.

However, if everything is done correctly and clearly, there should be no problems, and the invested funds will pay off in abundance.

Species overview

By folding method

Much also depends on what type of sofa is used. Draw-out models have long been recognized as the best choice in terms of performance and reliability. Inside, a special design of rollers is used, divided into 3 parts. When folded, one of the parts is inside the sofa back. The other 2 blocks form the seat itself.

Converting it to a regular bed is easy: all you need to do is pull on a hidden strap that is fixed somewhere in the front. Each next pull-out unit in the roll-out sofa is slightly lower than the previous element. However, it is impossible to notice this - all the difference is compensated by carefully selected pillows. As a result, the front surface of the bed is at the same level. Sleepers do not feel any failures or humps, even if they are very demanding of such shortcomings.

The blocks are rolled out using the wheels. They move along predetermined guides, which are rigidly fixed to the frame. No perceptible force is required. Even children can use the roll-out sofa bed without feeling any inconvenience or difficulty. Also roll-out sofa beds differ:

  • the minimum occupied space in the room;
  • the possibility of close proximity to the wall;
  • the presence of built-in storage systems;
  • universal appearance (guaranteeing good perception in any room);
  • simplicity and reliability of the mechanism;
  • excellent durability;
  • long period of service;
  • a wide range of design solutions and colors.

but roll-out sofa bed cannot form a high berth. In many cases, its height is only 0.2-0.3 m from the floor. Undoubtedly, this will not suit all people. You will also have to constantly monitor the health and safety of the roller blocks.

And one more nuance: roll-out sofas cannot be disassembled into parts, which creates many problems when they are brought into houses (apartments) or when temporarily rearranged into other rooms.

Therefore, it is worth paying attention to the more traditional folding type. Moreover, it has repeatedly proven itself from the best side. There is no perfect layout mechanism that fits all cases. Only by taking into account the specifics of a specific performance and your needs, you can make the right choice. The classic solution, which is often (and quite reasonably) chosen, is "book" and its logical technical development - "Eurobook".

The traditional "book" does not have a fixed wall behind. Therefore, it will not be possible to push it tightly against the wall.Normal layout is possible only when the necessary clearance is found on this side. But everything is arranged simply and logically, does not cause any special complaints from users. Eurobook is appreciated for its more modern look and increased durability.

Such a device allows the main parts to be arranged after the layout in the most rational and physiologically adequate way. Also "Eurobook" is characterized by:

  • small footprint;
  • the formation of a large berth;
  • the ability to tightly push the sofa bed against the wall;
  • the presence of a large linen box;
  • wide price range (allowing you to choose the best solution);
  • compatibility with a wide variety of fillings and types of upholstery.

In the "eurobook" there are no parts that could break. If certain problems arise, then they can always be eliminated by hand. However, such a sofa will continuously affect the floor. Even the strongest and most stable floor coverings are unlikely to withstand such an impact for long. On parquet flooring, laminate and linoleum, it is better to put a sofa with wheels, and not with legs.

Thick carpet allows you to use regular legs, but then tightly pressed areas will inevitably appear.

If you try to choose a multifunctional convenient option, then preference should be given the "click-gag" scheme. Sofas of this design can hardly be called newcomers to the Russian market. Sophisticated consumers have known for a long time that it is convenient to store the same bedding in them. The used transforming mechanism allows you to choose several different positions of the backrest and rigidly fix them. "Click-gag" is generally reliable and durable, it also does not cause any inconvenience at night.

The traditional "accordion" has no less positive qualities. In the characteristics of this method of transformation, they always indicate:

  • the convenience of use;
  • long service life;
  • ease of daily use.

Accordion design can be very different. Therefore, the selection of a model that would ideally fit into the design of the room is not difficult. There are modifications with both traditional mechanical and automatic position change.

However, there should be plenty of free space in front of the accordion. Otherwise, it is unlikely that it will work normally to move around the room. In addition, rubber rollers, with active use, can strongly leave on the flooring.

Dolphin sofas, like other modifications, they can be supplied with anatomical and orthopedic mattresses of your choice. To unfold such furniture, belts or handles are used. These parts allow you to move individual parts of the structure. The sleeping place on the "dolphins" is large enough and comfortable. Individual modifications of such sofas may differ:

  • the materials used;
  • size;
  • the presence of a linen box or the refusal of it;
  • the use of armrests with hidden storage niches (although you can, of course, choose a model without armrests at all).

Many people among all folding sofas in the first place put the type "French clamshell". It really looks like a traditional clamshell. But inside, a drop-down frame is used, consisting of three steps. "French clamshells" are quite compact when folded, after the layout is enough space for two people. They are placed both along the wall and in the center of the room.

The "French" scheme still has a major flaw. Due to the specifics of the mechanism, it will be impossible to store things inside the sofa. And in the unfolded state, the structure will take up a lot of useful space. For the convenience of sleeping on such a sofa, you will have to additionally use a thin mattress. And here it is important to make a small digression in order to understand which models are better - with a spring mattress or a regular one-piece mattress.

There will be only one answer: only well-made spring blocks allow you to achieve optimal orthopedic characteristics. Furniture can be purchased as a guest or occasional sofa bed with dependent blocks of the "bonnel" type. This is the only kind of dependent spring block that deserves attention. All other options are outdated morally long ago and will not suit modern people.

Yet even the Bonnel is inferior to the independent spring arrangement. In it, all springs are packed in separate cases. The load always falls on only those springs that must accept it. Therefore, the mechanical force is distributed evenly. Wear will also occur smoothly and slowly, ensuring the maximum orthopedic effect.

It is useful to consider that in different sofas with independent spring blocks there may be an unequal number of support points per 1 sq. m. It is this indicator that determines the quality of support and a safe, restful sleep. So, a standard TFK includes 256 springs per meter, and in the micro-package there are no less than 1000 of them. Multizone models are chosen by those who cannot find the optimal conditions for each part of the body. In this case, the sofa itself (or rather, the mattress) will undertake careful adjustment and adaptation.

The "American clamshell" consists of three sections. The seat is pulled out for folding. Following him, all sections open and install themselves on the supports. You just need to take into account that each section requires a separate layout technique. "Sedaflex", as this type is sometimes also called:

  • does not cause difficulties during operation;
  • mechanically reliable;
  • has been working steadily for many years;
  • does not have linen boxes;
  • inevitably forms seams on the surface of the berth.

By form

There is a common misconception that sofa beds can only be straight and angled... Usually, they also add that the first type is better suited for zoning, and the second - for "closing" unused corners of the room. But no less useful solution for a large area is island sofas. They cannot be placed in a corner or moved to the wall.

However, where there is room for such furniture, it manifests itself brilliantly.

Corner sofa:

  • suitable for a large living room;
  • forms a very large sleeping place;
  • able to replace the combination of a straight sofa and a traditional armchair;
  • rather difficult to transport;
  • can be delivered far from everywhere;
  • spoils the look of a small room and does not allow it to fully use it.

The properties of straight sofas are as follows:

  • the ability to install both to the walls and in the middle of the room;
  • rational use of even limited space;
  • increased depth and capacity of seats;
  • variety of dimensions;
  • comparative ease of portability;
  • perfect visual combination with armchairs.

Materials (edit)

A good sofa bed, as it turned out, is made only with a "filling" of independent spring blocks. Even the best grades of polyurethane foam cannot be considered a complete alternative. But upholstery materials are no less important, because it is with them that people will be in contact continuously. Tactile sensations, appearance, and environmental safety play a role. Among natural types of upholstery, it stands out favorably cotton.

It is hygroscopic and allows air to pass freely. Since only natural raw materials are used in production, the material is completely safe for humans and the environment. Even with active use, cotton upholstery will last at least 5-6 years.

Many people, however, prefer the more durable jacquard... This material is very resistant to UV exposure and looks gorgeous, makes a pleasant impression with floral ornaments and patterns.

But we must remember that jacquard is easily damaged when moistened, and it is rather difficult to care for it.

It will look more pleasant in an emphatically antique interior tapestry... It is produced using approximately the same technology as jacquard, however, more expensive raw materials are used. Nowadays, it is no longer possible to get by with natural fibers alone. Therefore, the tapestry now almost always includes synthetic threads.

Those with enough money should take a closer look. to silk upholstery. It is distinguished by a particularly smooth surface that leaves a pleasant feeling. Silk only seems fragile - in fact, it is a stable and reliable material. In addition, it does not provoke allergic reactions and does not build up static electricity. However, many people are not happy with the feeling of coldness created by silk materials.

In a classic interior, leather sofa beds will also look positive. The skin can have a smooth, shiny or matte finish. It is better to clarify this point before buying so as not to spoil the ensemble. The skin lasts long enough and is undemanding to care for. However, she is "afraid" of fire and sharp objects, and the variety of shades is relatively small.

Another good option is scotchguard. This fabric is similar to jacquard, but significantly cheaper. Products made from it serve for a long time and are mechanically strong. Attention: Scotchguard does not survive exposure to hot water very well.

If possible, remove contaminated covers and dry cleaners.

Designers often recommend using sofa beds. from flock. Their surface is distinguished by an elusive velvety. This fabric is environmentally friendly and resistant to contact with water. It looks good both in the guest areas and in the bedrooms. However, the flock absorbs odors and will gradually fade.

Dimensions (edit)

The dimensions of the sofa bed are also important. Small structures are not suitable for a whole family or for tall people. The main difference to consider is the choice of a single or double piece of furniture. These two groups have separate dimensions for serial production. Of course, a sofa bed of any size can be made to order.

Among the straight sofa beds, the most common three-seater models. They allow the whole family to relax in the afternoon or evening. The length of such furniture varies from 2 to 2.5 m. The width is 0.8-1 m. Double structures are more compact (usually up to 1.7 m with the same width as the three-seater counterparts).

Sometimes, however, they use a large two-seater sofa measuring 190 by 160 cm. It is placed in spacious rooms. And the largest of the serial products that are in the assortment of most manufacturers are four-seater corner sofa beds. In length, they reach 3-4 m. For obvious reasons, it is necessary to choose such furniture as thoughtfully as possible, taking into account all the nuances.

Selection rules

Choosing a sofa bed for sleeping and for everyday use are completely different things. In the first case, maximum convenience is fundamentally important, and in the second, appearance should also be taken into account. But the most reasonable thing is to look for the optimal balance between them. If you plan to sleep on the sofa bed all the time, you should prefer models with a capacious linen box. This is practical and allows you to unload the ever-crowded cupboards.

    You should not buy a sofa bed from online stores (except in the largest and personally checked places). It is impossible to control the real quality of the goods there. Be sure to be interested in quality and safety certificates. Experienced users always look in advance for reviews in different places and check the serviceability of the structure in points that are hardly noticeable from the outside. It is also advisable to check that the entire fabric is stretched as tightly as possible, does not sag anywhere and does not form folds.
