Crepe georgette is a rather soft and pleasant to the touch natural silk fabric, which is characterized by a special interweaving of tightly twisted threads. The material can be used on either side, making it a versatile canvas.

What it is?

The airy crepe georgette fabric has received all-round love and immense popularity among ordinary people due to its unique properties, as well as a very bright, spectacular and therefore well-remembered appearance.

The very name "crepe georgette" has French roots. The peak of popularity of this fabric came in the second half of the 19th century, but stylish evening dresses were created from it before. The second wave of popularity of the material fell on the 20s of the XX century and in the post-war period. In those days, cropped cocktail dresses made of crepe georgette were especially in demand.

Over time, very lush, multi-tiered skirts began to be created from such a canvas. This fabric was also used for decorative frills on women's underwear.

The name of the fabric, which is still used today, was given in honor of the famous dressmaker of the 20th century named Georgette de la Plante. Initially, the fabric was made from yarn with highly twisted fibers.

Nowadays, solid and expensive things are made from crepe georgette. This kind of beautiful material makes it possible to emphasize their elegance. Due to the rather high cost price, crepe georgette is not as popular today as it was 70 years ago, but on the sidelines of haute couture, the scope of its use is quite high.

When describing this fabric, its roughness and graininess are indicated, which are immediately visible to the eye and feel well to the touch. The fabric can be plain or with a beautiful printed pattern, pattern, sometimes bleached. Outwardly, its structure seems a little loose, but in fact it is distinguished by its amazing density and special elasticity.

Very light, weightlessly thin, flowing beautifully, it is nevertheless practically inelastic and does not stretch at all. A characteristic feature of this material can also be called its unique luster. Natural material will practically not show through and for this reason does not require additional lining.

Many crepe georgette products look quite vintage, which is often used by eminent stylists in their collections. The original crepe georgette is made from natural silk fibers. In order to reduce the cost of linen, manufacturing companies include viscose and other synthetic threads, such as elastane and polyester, in the composition of the material. Polyester helps to give the fabric extra elasticity, extraordinary strength and almost eliminates the tendency of the fabric to strong shrinkage.

The less natural fibers are used here, the cheaper the material will be and the easier it will be to maintain.

At the same time, it is worth knowing that the hygienic characteristics of crepe georgette are significantly reduced due to the large amount of synthetic fibers. In modern stores, you can easily find a material created entirely from polyester, with the addition of elastane.

Nuances of care

Crepe georgette is one of the most delicate materials, it is for this reason that you need to take care of fabric products as carefully as possible, ideally things made from such a delicate material should be dry-cleaned.

Care at home, first of all, should begin with a detailed study of the label, where the composition of the fabric and all the necessary recommendations for the correct washing and ironing of products will be indicated.

The basic rules of care include the following recommendations.

  • It is allowed to wash by hand only at temperatures up to 30 degrees.
  • It is strictly forbidden to use aggressive detergents when washing.
  • Serious friction and twisting of products during any spin cycle is simply unacceptable.
  • Before you start drying a freshly washed item, you will need to carefully flatten it to avoid creases. You can dry the product on a hanger, or put it in a horizontal position in a well-ventilated area.
  • It is unacceptable for direct sunlight to be applied to the material - in this case, you can ruin the thing irrevocably. Therefore, it is necessary to dry crepe georgette clothes in a place well protected from sunlight.
  • Ironing can be done at the lowest temperature through a protective fabric.
  • At the same time, experts do not advise using gauze, since through it water can get onto the fabric and leave indelible splashes. For the same reason, it is also impossible to spray water on the crepe georgette from a spray bottle.

As you can immediately notice, crepe-georgette fabric has more positive sides than disadvantages. However, all these disadvantages can be considered significant. If you still have a desire to purchase a product made of such a complex, but beautiful fabric, then first decide on the size so that the clothes do not become too small with possible shrinkage.

In addition, you should not try to sew something from this canvas on your own. Much less cost will be when purchasing ready-made clothes.
