Scooters are among the most popular means of transportation. They are easy to use, you can have a great free time with them, go in for sports. The range of these devices is huge - each consumer can choose the ideal model for himself that meets all his requirements and wishes. In this article, we will take a closer look at all the features of scooters and find out how to select them correctly.

History of appearance

The creation of the first scooter model dates back to 1761... This light vehicle was invented in Germany by Michael Kassler. There is another version of the appearance of this device, stating that the inventor of the scooter was Karl von Drez. Charles invented this form of transport in 1817, and in 1820 modified the design by making the wheel in the front part steerable. Such types of devices have won immense popularity and widespread use in France and England.

In 1819, the inventor from England Denis Johnson patented an improved model of the scooter, developed 2 years earlier by Karl Drez. The new frame was made of wood, just like the wheels. Instead of tires, there were metal rims. The product was not designed with a brake at all. The front fork was also made of iron, like all the elements on which the seat with the armrest was located. The diameter of the wheels was 76.2 cm (39 inches).

The weight of such a scooter was about 30 kg. The method of movement on it was in many ways similar to the way of operating a modern balance bike for children - it was required to push off the road with both feet in turn.

In 1839-1840, a Scottish blacksmith named Kirkpatrick Macmillan continued to improve the design of the von Dreis scooter. He provided the product with pedals, a crank and a lever attached to the rear wheel. With the onset of the 20th century, the world saw a new invention - a scooter equipped with an engine. In 1915, the American firm Autoped Company of America began to produce the first scooter models equipped with a low-valve 155 cc engine with a capacity of 1.5 liters. with. The device had small wheels, a folding steering wheel.

At that time, the manufactured products made a splash in the American and Western European markets.

Over the years of its existence, the scooter has undergone a lot of changes and improvements. Much has changed both in its design and in the functional component. New models of these affordable vehicles were constantly appearing. In the Soviet Union, the transport in question was associated with an object for children, however, in 1937 an article was published in a well-known scientific journal describing how engineer Sergei Stanislavovich Lundovsky developed a scooter for adults.

In those days, such an innovation became something truly unusual. The "adult" scooter was capable of transporting the user by 50 m from a single repulsive movement of the leg. The structure could be supplied with a load of 30 kg. The scooter was a modified children's model "Orlik" with a lowered platform. Wheels in the "adult" design were attached using special lever nuts, they could be easily removed. The products were supplemented with a rack made from a bicycle frame.

Unfortunately, the production of scooters of this type was not established, but the name of Sergei Lundovsky got into the history of the domestic scooter.

In the 80s of the last century, Soviet scooters ceased to be popular - they were replaced by imported bicycles, which at that time seemed to be a real miracle of technology. In the 90s, attractive-looking scooters for children, characterized by mobility and lightness, began to go on sale. Over time, the road, sports and racing categories of devices began to be provided. Today the range of scooters is gorgeous. There are many well-known manufacturers on the market that produce high-quality scooter models of various modifications.

You can find the perfect product for every taste, color and budget.

Device and characteristics

The scooter can be safely considered something in between a bicycle and a skateboard. The vehicle structure is assembled from a number of basic elements.

  • Frame. The supporting base is made of steel, aluminum alloy or magnesium. Many pieces can be folded, easy to store and carry.
  • Soundboard. Rider foot bar.
  • Steering wheel. It can be either regulated or unregulated. It is made T-shaped or "bicycle". There are instances in which the steering wheel is made in the form of a joystick.
  • Wheels. The products include 2 wheels. However, it will be possible to find products on sale where there are 3 or 4 wheels.
  • Shock absorbers... They are not installed on all models, but if the suspension fork is present in the design, then the trip will be convenient and comfortable, since shocks and vibrations will be softened.
  • Brake system... The vehicle has a foot brake. The rear wing is responsible for its functionality. The latter is made of metal or plastic, with a metal block attached. When pressed, the brake applies pressure to the wheel, reducing travel speed. There are examples in which braking is carried out due to the action of the handle on the steering part. It connects to the brake pad on the wheels at both the front and rear. Scooters with disc brakes are available.Bicycle brake systems are installed in the shirts.
  • Folding mechanism... Thanks to him, the device is convenient and "pliable" in transportation. A common type of folding mechanism, in which the steering rack must be folded together with the front wheel. Less common are options in which only the steering rack can be folded.

The principle of operation of scooters has practically not changed over their two-hundred-year history. To move on this type of transport, you just need to push off the ground with your foot, controlling the movement of the structure with a simple steering wheel. The only exceptions are modern electric scooters, which are equipped with a motor and a comfortable seat. Modern scooter models are characterized not only by a well-thought-out design, but also by their small dimensions. Urban devices are compact.

Most of the models are adapted to urban or off-road conditions. Scooters are equipped with wheels of optimal dimensions, which are often inflatable.

Varieties

All types of scooters are divided into several types, differing in functionality and design.

Classic two-wheeled

Models are more common than others. Urban two-wheeled scooters are often equipped with a high-quality shock-absorbing system, and their wheels differ in diameter of 150-250 mm. Using this technique, it is possible to drive smoothly over cracks and potholes on the asphalt road. Two-wheeled scooters have many advantages:

  • when driving around the city, they turn out to be comfortable;
  • equipped with a convenient folding mechanism;
  • differ in modest weight;
  • accelerate well, having an optimal wheel diameter;
  • it will be possible to pick up a glorious model for a democratic price.

The disadvantages of urban two-wheeled devices are as follows:

  • need constant care;
  • are not suitable for tricks.

T-shirts

This is what bicycle scooters are called. These are off-road devices that share many of the characteristics of conventional bicycles. There are full-size wheels with a diameter of 29 inches. T-shirt models are distinguished by good overclocking. The gained speed is maintained better and longer, but the rider has to exert a lot of effort to control them. T-shirts have the following advantages:

  • characterized by good speed and good coasting;
  • with such a professional design, it is possible to overcome various obstacles;
  • there are a large number of bicycle parts - there are no problems with replacement;
  • the t-shirt can be easily adjusted for yourself;
  • good hand brake;
  • there is a shock-absorbing front fork.

But there are also disadvantages:

  • large dimensions;
  • well noticeable load on the legs.

Kickboards

Kickboards are not far from skateboards. They have a shortened, wide deck. There are 3 wheels. The main pair is located in the front. This solution makes it possible to appeal to other riding techniques by tilting the deck and forcing the product to turn (just like on skateboards). This is facilitated by the replacement of the standard T-like steering wheel with a joystick. The devices are characterized by the following advantages:

  • are resistant;
  • fast models, can develop good speed;
  • turn out to be hassle-free in transportation and carrying;
  • controlled by both steering wheel and feet;
  • there is a foot brake on the rear wheel.

Weaknesses are:

  • increased turning radius;
  • not the most affordable price.

Trikes (triders)

These scooters should not be confused with trike bikes. The devices are equipped with 3 wheels, but their main difference from kickboards is the presence of 2 short decks. In certain cases, the platform supports are made in the form of a transverse bar. Such instances are called inertial scooters, since they can be ridden without contact with the road. In the basic configuration, the models are equipped with 2 foot brakes. For the purpose of comfortable control, devices are often equipped with hand brake systems. Trikes are characterized by the following advantages:

  • high indicators of stability;
  • Beautiful design;
  • endlessly making repulsive movements from the road is not necessary;
  • it is possible to perform tricks;
  • good handling;
  • load on the muscles of the body and legs.

There are weaknesses:

  • requirements for the condition of the asphalt pavement;
  • it is difficult to keep balance at first.

Stunt

Sports scooters with a reinforced, non-separable frame that cannot be adjusted. There are small wheels (from 100 to 125 mm.). But this does not mean that stunt devices move at low speed - on the track they demonstrate themselves as good, high-speed models, since they have bearings of the highest accuracy and class. Trick items can look a little childish, but they can handle significant loads without problems. Scooters are famous for the following qualities:

  • strength characteristics;
  • maneuverability;
  • easy acceleration on short sections;
  • comfortable control.

The cons are:

  • unsuitable for road trips;
  • the rudder height level cannot be adjusted;
  • functional content is weak, and the price is high.

Dirt

This is a kind of sports device suitable for extreme off-road driving. Products are equipped with wide inflatable wheels with a camera, a serious tread. There is a high-strength frame, but the steering wheel cannot be adjusted. The devices have the following advantages:

  • robust, high strength construction;
  • high cross-country ability;
  • the ability to perform tricks;
  • good set of speed;
  • easy handling.

Consider the cons:

  • you have to make a lot of effort to ride;
  • dirt scooters are expensive.

Which is better: a scooter or a bicycle?

To answer this question, one should compare devices and understand in what parameters are they superior or inferior to each other.

  • Most scooters are more compact and easier to store than bicycles. It can be problematic to store the latter in small apartments, as well as to transport them in the metro, especially if their base is not collapsible.
  • Scooters are easier to drive than bicycles. They are more maneuverable and "obedient", elementary in mastering.
  • The bike manages to overcome more impressive distances. Their design includes a seat that not all scooters have.
  • When riding a scooter, the rider usually has to contact the road surface, but when riding a bicycle, this is not necessary, which is especially pleasing in rainy and muddy weather.
  • The scooter does not need to be parked on the street, unlike most bicycles.
  • The lion's share of scooters is lighter than bicycles.
  • Scooters are often cheaper than bicycles.

Considering all the listed differences between the devices under consideration, you can decide for yourself which is better: a bicycle or a scooter. If you want to travel long distances, ride long and long distances in comfort, then a bicycle will be the best, because it has a seat, trunk and pedals for control - you won't have to push off the ground with your feet. If you need a compact, lightweight and maneuverable device for commuting to work or just for leisure, then a scooter may also do.

Each of the devices has its own strengths and weaknesses, it is worth choosing the best option based on your own goals and desires.

The benefits and harms of skating

Consider the positive impact of driving on the considered mode of transport:

  • while riding a scooter, the blood vessels and the human heart are strengthened - this is an excellent prevention of vegetative-vascular dystonia;
  • the work of the lungs is stimulated, varicose veins are prevented, the state of men's health is increased, pain in the neck and lower back is avoided;
  • the scooter will allow you to keep your figure in shape and tone;
  • riding a scooter has a positive effect on the eyes - while moving on the device you have to look into the distance one by one, focusing on close points - this is a good training for the eyes;
  • attention develops well;
  • in the cold season, riding a scooter strengthens the human immune system.

Riding a scooter is unlikely to cause serious harm. The risk of falling from this device and getting injured is generally lower than with bicycles. Of course, if the structure is assembled in bad faith, then its operation can lead to bad consequences, but you can use reliable and durable models without fear of harming yourself.

How to choose?

The choice of a scooter should be made in accordance with the goals of the consumer:

  • if you plan to drive a job or ride in the park on weekends, it is better to take a two-wheeled urban version with a folding mechanism;
  • for full-fledged sports activities on special tracks or BMX grounds, it is worth taking a stunt model with small wheels and high-quality bearings;
  • for trips far from the city, you should buy a football bike or a powerful dirt scooter;
  • if a product is selected for a child, then a stable option like a kickboard or trider would be the best solution, it is advisable to select models that are adjustable in height.

You should buy only high-quality, branded models. Before buying, you should carefully inspect the scooter design for damage or defects. If any were noticed, the goods should not be taken.

Security

When buying a scooter, one must remember that there is always a risk of falling off of it. This is especially important if you are buying a children's model. All protective equipment must be purchased (knee pads, helmet, elbow protectors). It is also necessary to fall correctly. It is advisable to work out the fall technique in advance (for both adults and children). If a model with large wheels is used, you should fall on your knees, protected by knee pads.

The arms do not need to be put forward - they need to be bent so that, upon impact, the load is applied to the elbows, also protected by equipment.

Traffic Laws

Scooters are not categorized as vehicles, just like bicycles. Scooters obey the same rules as pedestrians. All requirements are listed in chapter 4 of the road traffic regulations. Here are some excerpts.

  • Basically, movement on a scooter should be carried out on the sidewalk. In certain cases, you can drive onto the roadway.
  • If there is no footpath, you can ride the scooter on the side of the road. When a rider here interferes with other pedestrians, he can drive along the edge of the carriageway.
  • If there is no sidewalk or footpath, it is allowed to drive along the bicycle road or along the edge of the carriageway. In the second case, you need to move in the direction of movement of other means of transport.
  • In places where traffic is regulated, the rider must be guided by traffic signals or traffic signals.
  • On an unregulated pedestrian crossing, a person on a scooter can drive onto the roadway, assessing the distance to approaching objects. You must not create interference for other road users, provoke dangerous situations (for example, drive out because of a stopped vehicle).

Before using the scooter, you must familiarize yourself in detail with all the relevant points of the traffic rules.

How to ride?

Learning how to properly ride a scooter is very easy. A simple ride on an urban model should go like this.

  • The starting position is as follows: standing on the structure straight, leaning slightly forward, the supporting leg should be put on the deck, and the leading one should be moved to the road.
  • Now you can start moving. Keeping one foot on the bar, the other should push off the ground. While riding, you need to keep balance, moving the weight from the leading foot to the supporting one and back.

Braking happens like this.

  • The jogging leg goes down, nestles to the ground. Relevant at low speed.
  • Hand or foot brakes are used.

Consumers leave different reviews about scooters. Here's what pleases the owners in such devices:

  • affordable prices;
  • light weight;
  • the presence of folding mechanisms;
  • the presence of mileage counters on some models;
  • the presence of high-quality brakes;
  • comfortable and quiet ride;
  • ease of management;
  • maneuverability of most models;
