Art Deco is one of the most difficult styles to perform, but it is also one of the most spectacular and luxurious. This direction is more than a hundred years old and a variety of elements are harmoniously combined in it. Decorating a bedroom in the art deco style will be a great solution for those who like elegant and cozy spaces.

Peculiarities

This is not to say that art deco is a style with strict standards, such as the classics. The peculiarity of the direction and its "zest" lies precisely in the mixing of styles: modern designs and classic ones successfully coexist here, medieval motifs, notes of cubism and futurism are clearly traced.

For the first time, Art Deco appeared in the wealthy European houses of the 20th century. At that time, only wealthy owners could afford such a design. Compliance with the canons cost a lot of money, and only natural materials were bought for the decoration of the premises. Now everything has changed a little, and art deco has become a frequent "guest" in the bedrooms and living rooms of ordinary people.

It is worth considering what features and characteristics are inherent in this direction.

  • Application of geometry. Art Deco prefers geometric, clear lines, but romance is best left to other styles. Items with 6-8 corners, herringbone parquet flooring are very common.
  • Trapezoidal shapes. This applies to doors, mirrors, decor items.
  • Naturalness. To fully embody the concept of style, you should use only natural, expensive materials, such as leather, stone, glass, wood. There is no place for imitations. Fabrics should also be exclusive: velvet, silk.
  • Good lighting. An abundance of both natural and artificial light is encouraged.
  • Gloss. The surfaces should give a shine. Wood, stone - all this must be polished, this idea provides a beautiful play of light and shadow, which is very much appreciated by art deco lovers.
  • Abundance of furniture. Emptiness is something that the style does not accept. The bedroom should have a sufficient amount of furniture: a bed, a chest of drawers, bedside tables, tables with a mirror, poufs and much more.
  • Ethnic notes. In addition to classical and modern styles, the East also brought its motives to art deco. Reptile skins, oriental lamps and lamps, mandalas, Egyptian figurines are very popular here.

Color spectrum

When choosing a color scheme for a bedroom, it is important to remember that poisonous, overly bright colors are not welcome here in this style, this instantly makes the room "cheap". The main condition is the rule of three colors, two of which should be basic, and one - accent. The main shades can be:

  • White;
  • coffee;
  • lactic;
  • ivory;
  • beige;
  • chocolate;
  • black.

Among the accent tones are:

  • Gray;
  • turquoise;
  • coral;
  • deep purple;
  • brick;
  • ruby;
  • denim;
  • olive;
  • wine;
  • bright blue.

The main colors should occupy a leading position: they are used in the decoration of walls, floors and ceilings, they are chosen for furniture, textiles, curtains. An accent color is a great solution for small details: pattern on wallpaper, carpet, print on curtains. In addition, a similar color will help zone the space.

Also, to add grace to the bedroom, gold and silver decor is often used, but it should not look clumsy.

Finishing options

As already mentioned, art deco requires the use of exclusively natural materials that can emphasize the exclusivity of the finish. Consider how you can beautifully decorate a bedroom and what materials are best to use.

Walls

The appearance of the walls is the first thing that catches your eye, so it is very important to arrange them correctly. The most popular option is to buy wallpaper, while the choice should be made in favor of expensive models: with silk-screen printing, embossing. In addition, you can apply decorative plaster, hand-painted, fabric canvases.

Very often, interior designers offer to make one accent wall, as a rule, this is the wall above the head of the bed. It can be made brighter, equipped with a niche in it, or draped with heavy expensive fabric. Lighting in this area is also a good idea.

You also need to remember about the color of the walls. If the room is small, you should not use dark colors, give preference to light, light colors that visually enlarge the bedroom and make it more airy.

Floor

For finishing the floor we use rare wood, stone, expensive tiles, carpet. Polished plank floors are the most requested solution. They are laid out with a herringbone, but other geometric shapes may also be present. A beautiful animal skin located in the center of the bedroom or by the bed will allow you to play in contrast with such a floor.

Self-leveling floors are also popular, capable of creating an imitation of anything: marble, wood, stone. Also, you can depict any drawings and patterns on them. Parquet or laminate flooring are other finishing ideas.

There are no clear criteria, the main thing is that the floor looks decent.

Ceiling

One of the options for the design of the ceiling is the use of stucco molding. It looks rich and elegant, evokes associations with the old halls and castles of the Renaissance. In this case, it is especially important to think over the decor of the chandelier zone - it would be nice to place additional stucco molding around the lighting fixture.

A multi-tiered suspended ceiling is suitable for those who lean more towards modernity than classics. With such a ceiling, the room will seem more spacious and higher.To complete the style concept, lighting is added to the ceiling: around the entire perimeter or only in some areas.

Mirrored panels will be a real godsend. If your bedroom is small, they will help you enlarge it too. Another solution is painting. The drawing should be calm: for example, images of fruits, Greek and Roman statues, pastoral motives are suitable here. The ceiling will be complemented by strict classical borders.

Organization of lighting

Art Deco involves a lot of light, and it is very important that this light is warm. Yellow bulbs, soft lighting, built-in lamps, lampshades will help to achieve this. The more lighting fixtures there are, the more interesting different types of surfaces will play in their light.

Almost all Art Deco bedrooms have a huge chandelier. The best solution would be a model representing hanging crystal strands or balls. Also, the chandelier can be multi-track, but then each "twig" must have an unusual shape.

The choice of owners is unlimited as lamps: small round balls, intricate trapezoidal and complex structures, finished with metal - all this is actively practiced and used in this direction.

Furniture

Furniture in the bedroom should be beautiful and practical at the same time. As a rule, furniture is made of precious woods, and then upholstered with velvet. Expensive stones and gilding will become additional decorations.

The interesting thing is that you don't have to select furniture in a single concept: style standards allow the use of different furniture. For example, a classic table will look interesting with modern bedside tables. But such an effect can be achieved only if the objects are united by some common feature: the same colors, elements of gold or silver.

The main item in the room is the bed. It should be massive, wide, with a voluminous velvet or leather headboard. The legs of the bed are high, forged. There must be bedside tables on the sides. You will also have to purchase a coffee or dressing table, several ottomans. A small sofa, the finish of which should match the design of the bed, would also be a good solution.

Forget about large and bulky wardrobes, art deco fashion suggests that such designs should be light, airy. A few elegant cupboards or dressers are what you need. It is better to make their surface shiny, for example, varnish or gloss will look beautiful. In addition, surfaces are painted, a good idea would be the use of metal elements or gilding.

Textiles and decor elements

Fabrics for an Art Deco bedroom can be selected in a variety of ways, but they must look expensive. Windows are usually draped with heavy velvet or satin curtains; silk may also be preferred. It is very beautiful when the drapery is multi-layered. The upholstery of poufs, sofas, chairs, decor of pillows must match the color and material of the curtains. Gilded cornices and tassels will help to complement the heavy curtains.

As for the decor items, for the bedroom you can choose:

  • beautiful landscapes, always in bronze or gilding frames;
  • volumetric vases of different eras: Egyptian, ancient Eastern, Roman, French;
  • various and bizarre figurines of people and animals;
  • beautiful carved boxes decorated with precious stones;
  • live plants in pots made of natural wood, covered with carvings;
  • animal skins, especially white;
  • heavy mirrors of pretentious shapes.

Successful examples

This bedroom, decorated in white and cream colors, successfully combines classic and modern elements. The contrast is played up by the accent brown wall above the headboard. There are also huge French windows that fully meet the lighting requirements.

Plum color is great combined with ivory and black. Strict symmetry is also observed: pay attention to the full correspondence of the bedside tables and lighting fixtures to each other. The headboard of the bed is accentuated and decorated with an unusual mirror in the shape of the sun, which is fully welcomed by the described direction.

This bedroom will be a bit similar to the previous one, characterized by the presence of black tones. High shelves visually enlarge the room, and a small white rug provides a homely atmosphere.

A chic and incredibly attractive solution would be to use bright purple colors. Combined with black and white, they gently play up the contrast. This design is complemented by a painting with a modern image, living plants and a statue of the classicism era.

And here's another bedroom with purple accents. Here, designers have relied on curtains, decorative pillows and bedspreads. A huge crystal chandelier, as well as unusual mirrors that make up the whole composition, give the room a shine and bohemianness.

Many people find a bedroom very warm and comfortable, where beige and cream shades coexist with bright blue. Completion of such an interior will be given by a non-standard chandelier, an accent wall at the head of the bed, as if upholstered in velvet, and a mirror on the floor.

This bedroom, on the other hand, seems cool at first glance. It will be appreciated by those who prefer discreet luxury and classics. The high ceiling, gray and white decoration, volumetric mirror and symmetrical stucco molding on the wall make the room look very spacious and absolutely not overloaded with details.
