It is not easy today to imagine various hygiene procedures, taking a shower or a classic trip to a bath or sauna without a warm towel, especially since a cozy terry cloth has long been included in the life of almost every modern man in the street. Both adults and children love it very much, give it to relatives on all sorts of holidays, and all the numerous attempts to replace it with artificial analogs have ended in failure.

What it is?

Terry cloth (and most often it is called simply "terry") - this is a natural type fabric with a fleecy surface made of loops of warp threads. If you give a small description of this fabric, then it is worth noting that outwardly it is very similar to velor or velvet, and upon closer inspection it is clear that the entire surface of the terry cloth consists of adjacent loops.

As part of this looped fabric, you can find cotton, linen, less often bamboo fibers. Terry products are often made on the basis of 100% cotton. It is particularly soft, gentle to the touch, and has the ability to completely absorb water. Linen terry cloth also has excellent quality characteristics. It will differ from cotton only in the thinner diameter of the thread used. Terry is also produced from bamboo. Products made from bamboo fibers look very impressive, have a special recognizable shine and amazing tenderness.

The fabric can be made of only one type of thread, or it can be combined (cotton with bamboo, linen with bamboo, cotton with linen).

History of origin

There are several versions of the origin of terry. Some researchers consider India to be the birthplace of the material.Others believe that she first appeared in Turkish workshops. Many put forward a version that the homeland of cotton is automatically the possible homeland of terry, since it was from cotton fibers that this looped fabric began to be made. The familiar look of products made of fluffy terry was adopted already in the 18th-19th centuries, when the first textile enterprises for the production of cotton linen began to be built. The first fabric similar to modern terry appeared in France in 1841. It was handcrafted from silk.

Samuel Holt was the first to patent a new type of fabric in both the United Kingdom and the United States, and began mass production at his plant in Paterson, New Jersey, in 1864.

Main characteristics

The main advantages of looped fabric.

  • Excellent massage effect. Rubbing your body with a looped towel or mitten can stimulate your own circulation, which is extremely beneficial for toning your body.
  • It is able to quickly absorb existing moisture. Using a terry towel, you can quickly dry yourself off after showering or bathing, as well as after swimming. By wrapping a towel around your head, you can quickly dry wet hair.
  • Provides free air circulation. Products made from terry, despite their density, will not prevent the skin from breathing freely, will not provoke increased sweating.
  • Hypoallergenic composition. Natural fabric will not cause irritation even on the most delicate baby skin.
  • Thermal protection properties. Stockings, socks and a variety of terry clothes will be warmer.
  • Resistant to deformation. Mahra will not shrink, will not deform, will not fade, will be able to withstand many washings while maintaining a presentable appearance.
  • Mahra will be beautifully combined with different decor elements.

There are not many disadvantages to the fabric.

  • The surface of the fabric is very often covered with puffs - its loops can easily catch on to various objects.
  • Increased hygroscopicity - leads to significant water consumption during washing, in addition, the products dry for a long time.
  • Excellent heat-shielding qualities make terry bedding completely unsuitable for use in summer.
  • The natural type of terry is very wrinkled, and it will not work to iron it in the usual way, because the product will immediately lose its fluffiness, lose its soft component and will no longer be able to quickly absorb moisture.

Care rules

Such a cloth can be washed in a machine or by hand. Do not wash the terry cloth together with those products that have fittings that can accidentally catch the pile loops. To save the terry cloth from possible deformations, you can put it in a special bag before washing.

When washing, it is better to use a liquid detergent, since the powder is difficult to rinse out of a loose fabric. The recommended temperature for washing is 60 degrees. You will need a fair amount of water at all stages of the wash. It will also be necessary to additionally rinse the product.

If the washing procedure is carried out manually, the terry cloth must be carefully wrung out, in no case twisted, but dried in a straightened state and with the pile up.

A terry product can be steamed, but only in an upright position.
